One of my favorite pianists. As a concert artist myself .. I feel there is no one better on Mozart Concerti and Schumann then Murray. I met him briefly when I was in London and he was also so friendly, down to Earth. He has inspired me towards musical excellence all my life. Thank you Maestro.
Mr. Haitink: Legendary maestro who was always about serving the music. Mr. Perahia: Legendary pianist who has always been about serving the music. Simply brilliant.

My god what a performance! The orchestra and piano are so in sync and complement each other so well. Hat’s off to composer, pianist, conductor and orchestra.
I have listened to this piece an uncountable number of times in the course of my life and I can say without hesitation that this is one of the finest performances I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. This is truly magnificent - and musically sane - playing. Murray Perahia executes this taxing concerto, during which the pianist has practically no time to rest, with both brilliance and sobriety.
Murrah Perahia just takes my breathe away... I have watched many pianist perform a number a variations and piano concerto's and none come remotely close.to the passion and endurance that Murrah has on the Piano
Murray Perahia TRANSCENDS! He becomes one with the music. He manages to both do justice to the composer and the music but at the same time makes it his own music. SUBLIME.
technically and artistically perfect. the best recording of this probably greatest piano concerto of the romantic Era.an emotional massage and great gift.
Glorious! A great musician and pianist. His record producer in the US, Andrew Kazdin, wrote about Perahia’s kindness and generosity, and also wrote that he is one of the very few pianists who does not insist - during the necessary technical adjustments after a recording - that the sound of his piano be louder than everything else. I love listening to his work, and knowing that he is a truly good person is a bonus! Many thanks for uploading this gem of a performance.
How miraculous. The vision of this truly great pianist and musician is realized and for this we are grateful also to Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw musicians who collaborate so beautifully. This is not soloist facing the orchestra, but all musicians together making Schumann's music. Can you imagine Schumann hearing this?
9 years late… just Wow!!! Awesome performance and interpretation!! Bravo dear Mr Perahia! He is only the second pianist I have heard play the 3rd movement of this beautiful concerto with absolute command! Miss him on the concert stage… heard all his Beethoven concertos and Hammerklavier at the Barbican…
@@DavidSmith-ki2we He was unwell over 5 years ago. I remember that he cancelled one then two then all his concerts and has not performed since. There are no details but I also know that he had a finger injury prior to that which might have come back to bother him. 😞

Btw, may I suggest Professor Sohn min soo's version( he is the teacher to Korean pianist Yun Chan Lim) of this concerto? His music fantastic and vibrant. Thank you!!
All the members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, including conductor Bernard Haitink, who sways the baton with unemphatical authority, are evidently enjoying the exquisite beauty of maestro Perahia's playing. Well, who wouldn't either......
That is so beautiful. So romantic, yet so brilliant. He switches moods so often, But does so smoothly. There are some people saying it's too repetitive. But it doesn't matter, Beacause it's beautiful and full of emotion. This concerto is amazing
Absolutely agree with you! He's precise, yet romantic and free. I love Schumann especially this piece's 3rd movement. He just rocks it! Totally, totally~! The best performance I've ever heard!
I remember listening to the Chicago Symphony concert on the radio, hearing pianist Murray Perahia performing Schumann's Piano Concerto with conductor Sir Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra during Sir Georg Solti's 75th birthday week.
Daniel, I'm sorry, but to claim that somehow English is superior to French is insane. I speak English as my first language, und Deutsch ist meine zweite Sprache. I don't know French, but I can appreciate the beauty and expressiveness of the language. Did you know it used to be the standard language of diplomats and merchants because of French economic dominance? Times have changed, but they will keep changing. For now, stop being selfish and demanding others to conform to you. Instead, reach out and try to cross the language barrier. As of now, it's people like you that give English-speakers a bad reputation :)
Late Perahia is so gorgeously delicate and sensitive, like Kempff at his best....Not saying early P was not also good, just since the Bach recordings he seems to have a whole nother dimension. Heard his Hammerklavier in person and I will never forget it....
Énorme, j'adore le passage à 13 min du premier mouvement, j'en ai écouté un paquet d'autres mais c'est cette interprétation qui correspond le mieux à mon ressenti.
I was thinking the same thing. The beautiful warm elastic playing shines through the pathetic audio quality. The orchestral playing is similarly elastic and sympathetic. The music breathes, and we can breathe with it. I first heard him when he was a teenager at the Marlboro Music Festival. Already he was a technical master and passionate musician. What joy to hear him now in full maturity as a great artist.
Yes, MP is a sublime musician...however, Rubinstein played this concerto equally sublimely-expressively, and as musicians and concertos go, AR is perhaps first among equals...MP's incredible breadth is unchallenged though, except concerto-wise...bottom line is that MP is likely the greatest living keyboard-musician, and has been so for many years....
Opening signs of concern and despair..then it picks up. More pathos in the Schumann by far. sometimes I forget that this concerto is a love letter to his wife Clara. ( beats a hallmark card) after Schumann died Brahms tried but failed to capture Clara's heart with his music which she liked but not loved.
