  • Flycatchers (really, insect-catchers!) are fascinating birds in that you can watch their insect-catching antics because they tend to perch on a twig, post or similar looking for prey. Then, having spotted a likely prey, they fly out (sally forth) to grab it, and then often return to the same perch. So, once you've spotted a flycatcher, the chances are that you can watch it in action many times whereas for many bird species, it's not so easy.
    This short video shows a male Vermilion Flycatcher and a Say's Phoebe in action at the Furnace Creek golf course in Death Valley (yes, there is a golf course right in the middle of the hottest place on Earth!).
    The technique used here is multiple high speed photos combined into a video sequence.
