John Lennon initially misunderstood the character of The Walrus in Alice in Wonderland. He thought he was a offbeat character and didn't think too much more about it as a kid. Later on, he came to understand that The Walrus and The Carpenter were an allusion to the thematic trope of deception and betrayal...in regard to their treatment of The Oysters. I don't doubt that it's mostly nonsense, but it's not an entirely empty reference either.

It's one of my favorite Beatles songs because London managed to merge the past and the present which I thought was pretty cool
