I love how you get to see how they actually acted when THEY were teens. Like I can totally believe that Snyder as a team was constantly getting ditched and just wanted to be included
I’ve seen this episode like a hundred times and the fact I’ve never noticed this before is a crime, I both thank you and shame you for grossing me out 😭🙌
Uh, I don't know if this is just because I'm in my 30's rewatching this, but I never noticed how Joyce and Giles are pretty damn attractive people. Kristine Sutherland looks gorgeous in this episode.
buffys 'i didnt know you could do that' as a reaction to the slowest sweatiest tai chi ive ever seen will go down in camp history it makes me cackle everytime
Yep, while the late fine wasn't that big (like 50 cents a week per book or something in my day?) library fines could certainly add up after a while because they'd keep adding more fines every week until they were returned.
@heavenlyshadev783 really? Ours had a cap. After a few months the fine stopped growing and instead you are expected to pay the same cost as replacing what you took out. You would not be allowed to take anything else out until you paid the fine in full where as before that point as long as you paid some of the fine you could still take new stuff out.
@@krose6451 I think ours capped at $100 if that was possible to even get to? I remember my mom accidentally throwing out a few library books and the buggers wanted $100 per book, which was way more than they cost new in the store.
I think Buffy Commented on Angel doing Tai Chi just to cover up her heavy breathing. And am I the only one that thinks Joyce is a total smokeshow? "Esquire" magazine was a Lifestyle, wardrobe, and advice on wining and dining the ladies.Copious amounts of scantily clad beauties were featured. Close enough for a 16 year old boy. Buffy's reaction when Joyce hands over the handcuffs...
God, I remember when I taught hs and band students sold "The World's Best Chocolate" bars- milk, dark, almond and caramel. I practically paid for band. Every day I would buy them and then after the fund raiser was over, I'd be standing at my door, screaming, "WHERE'S MY CHOCOLATE BAR???" Took weeks to kick the sugar habit and then, a year later, I'd do it all over again.
In the unlikely event that it hasn't been mentioned, Giles accent in this episode is simply Anthony Head speaking normally, though occasionally enhancing the strength of it. Some people are surprised when they realise that the Giles voice is the 'fake' one.
From what I remember, the SATs were given at different locations and different days and times and you could pick what day and the location you wanted to take them (assuming the location wasn't all booked up with people taking SATs). So I guess, if you missed your scheduled date and time, you could register to take them another date/time.
Did you know that the actor who plays Ethan Rayne (Robin Sachs) is the same actor who portrayed the evil alien Sarris in Galaxy Quest? Sadly, he died in 2013 from a heart attack at only 61.
Back in the 90s the SATs weren’t mandatory. You didn’t have to take them to graduate high school. You only needed them if you wanted to apply for college. So if you missed your SAT day you didn’t need a note. You didn’t have to be there, so nobody would care if you weren’t. And there was a second SAT day in case you missed it. I can’t remember if it was a makeup day, a chance to take them again if you didn’t like your scores, or just in a different neighborhood, but you could try again later. But that was before they used computers, when it was a standard physical test. I have no clue how it is now 🤷♀️😂
"What about the 16 year old who wants to be a stockbroker?" It's hinted to not be a literal de-aging, just a stripping away of responsibility and impulse control (Joyce is a bit too old to have known who Juice Newton was at 16, and Giles went through his hellraiser phase in his late teens and early twenties after implicitly being a well behaved and studious teenager.) So that guy would have been acting the same way as the rest of the kidults.
Depending on the library, they absolutely will make you pay a huge fine the longer you have it checked out. My local library I can't even check out from anymore because I returned a book late but then they were like "Oh, we already bought a new copy so you owe us $40 now" and when I said can you at least give me back the copy I returned they said they didn't have it since it was removed from the system, those books get thrown in the sale bin and sold. So like, I never paid them and I never went back. So dumb.
Library find in the United States can be ridiculous. I know someone who had a couple hundred dollars of library fines that prevented her from going back.
Yep. Outside of the Xander/Willow part its one of my favorite episodes. 😢 it annoys the heck out of me that such a good episode is tainted by that bull
Esquire is/was a lifestyle magazine for guys who want to be "cool". Lots of photos of sexy women in it. I would suppose that for some boys who couldn't get their hands on Playboy, etc. back in the day, Esquire was "legit"-seeming enough that you could claim you're reading the articles, when you really just wanted to look for the sexy women in it. When I was 13 or 14, I used to like to look at Cosmopolitan (women's lifestyle magazine) for that reason. They were all over the place for free reading, whereas getting a Playboy would have been very difficult.
I do love that while the training moment didn't last long we get to see the application of it when Buffy uses her other senses when trying to track down Ethan
SAT tests are scheduled events (not done by the school, though often hosted at the school), but they happen more then once a year so if you are sick, you could take the next one. But they are not exactly close together. There is also the ACT test as well.
I listened to Unspoiled Harry Potter podcast and they talked about it. Apparently you can resit the SATs but you have to pay so the rich get more opportunities to succeed but if you can't afford it then you get the score you get.
So from my experience, usually the SATs are held like every so often, I think like seasonally or every other month or something. And you can sign up and take them as often as you want but they do cost money, they’re always held on a Saturday and it’s timed (i think like 2 hours and you’re not allowed to leave until times up) so it’s just a whole bunch of bleh 🙄 but the good thing is you are allowed to submit your highest score! I took mine twice
Hello there! I love your reactions, commentary and to watch the loving connection you two clearly have! I’m looking forward to watching the new episode every week! Also, fashion commentary: Maria, I love your blouse!
SPOILERS FOR THE ORIGIN STORIES OF THE COMIC, MOVIE, AND THE MOVIES ORIGINAL SCRIPT This episode shows the one good reason Buffy burns the gym down was because it made Joyce into a parent who actually parents her daughter. There is a whole lot of evidence in S1 that shows this is what Joyce was like before then (although this was the over-the-top teenage version of what all three _Origin_ stories [the movie, the movies original script, and the origin comic] have her like just before S1), with not understanding how to parent In the most basic of ways a parent should know by the time their kid is Buffy's age in S1.
Yes, if you cannot take the SATs when scheduled for the school then they can set up a make up testing period depending on reason and if the school district admin wants to be a dick about it all or not.
If you missed the SAT test for whatever reason, you had to wait to the next official test day. They didn’t reschedule for you no matter what the reason.
back when i took it, there were several test dates per year, around 2-3 months apart. but i don't know that every test date was available at every location, so you might have to go to another town to take it on the next one.
In my country we have something similar to the SATs and separate college admission tests. No rescheduling in any of them, for any reason. If you miss them, you have to wait until the next one, usually a whole year. Some colleges have admissions every six months, but most only have once a year.
Someone should du a study on the impact of sudden rush of adrenalin on memory regarding academic pursuits. Like should one intersperse rigorous exorcise during study sessions? Or would that impede recall.
Comedy Overload with Snyder stealing the show! Band Candy always a fan favourite. Great to see all the adults acting like brat horny teenagers. Funniest part was when Joyce says to Giles 'your like Burt Reynolds' He was about the most famous Hollywood Film Star of the 1970s! That's what makes younger people reacting to this show so entertaining. The part at the end too was also very funny when Joyce and Giles see each other again and turn away embarrassed. Many have said the serious message in this episode was about the dangers of 'spiking' of drinks, drugs etc losing inhibitions, with the juxtaposition of the adults as teenagers.
esquire used to have like girls in bikinis so it was like for playboys same purpose but ur parents r less likely to know what ur doing (even tho obvs they do) if its esquire but thats just my interpretation
Esquire magazine was more in the vein of bikini (sports) babes, so a little less on the nose, or plausible deniablility. A thing more lacking with playboy or penthouse magazines, or Victoria Secret (stuff like that). They also had articles in them (not Victoria ofcourse), but if people said they read playboy for the articles you wouldn't be believed. If you said you read the esquire for the articles even if it was just for the bikini babes people would believe it a little bit more. Also: Keep in mind forms of (self) censorships in the USA, purity culture - purity balls, purity rings - this being a teen show. The Hays code being replaced with CARA which became the rating system we have now days; MPAA. Think in the veins of that.
I thought Esquire mostly had photos, at least cover photos, of men. They might have had "sexy" women on the magazine, but were not exactly trying for "risque" photos of women.
Yea, Giles accent has gone cockney. He went punk and all so he changed his accent to sound less posh in his youth as his way to avoid his calling as a watcher.
I love how you get to see how they actually acted when THEY were teens. Like I can totally believe that Snyder as a team was constantly getting ditched and just wanted to be included
If you watch carefully sometimes Joyce is chewing gum, sometimes Rupert is chewing gum. Every time they kiss they switch.
YUCK!
Eww 😂
I’ve seen this episode like a hundred times and the fact I’ve never noticed this before is a crime, I both thank you and shame you for grossing me out 😭🙌
That's DISGUSTING and I love it.
Giles in this just gives me flashes of "Repo! The Genetic Opera", a MUST WATCH. He also sounds like Spike lol
I love it anytime they let Joyce have fun.
As a rule of thumb, the more Joyce the better the ep.
One of my favorite episodes! Snyder just kills it!
Snyder in this episode is Snyder at his best. Outside of it there are only a few occasions I enjoy the character.
26:16 “let’s do this chocolate brother” is SENDING ME
Glad you liked that one 😂👍 - Sam

I thought it was that the fine was huge too, not the book, just that Cordelia didn't think she should have to pay a huge fine. Just me?
Yep, while the late fine wasn't that big (like 50 cents a week per book or something in my day?) library fines could certainly add up after a while because they'd keep adding more fines every week until they were returned.
Yeah, they probably don't have library fines in their country, just like they don't have hospital bills. MURICA.

Burt Reynolds was the epic of coolness in the 70s when they were teens.
Armin Shimerman must have had sooo much fun with this episode.
I think Buffy Commented on Angel doing Tai Chi just to cover up her heavy breathing.

Buffy's reaction when Joyce hands over the handcuffs...
My recollection is that they mostly had men in tuxedoes. waring Rolex's

I bought bars for myself when we sold them. Those went so hard
In the unlikely event that it hasn't been mentioned, Giles accent in this episode is simply Anthony Head speaking normally, though occasionally enhancing the strength of it. Some people are surprised when they realise that the Giles voice is the 'fake' one.
Yea, and he was James Marsters' accent coach for Spike!
Oooooh this episode is in my top 5 for the whole run of the show! Giles and Joyce are hysterical. 😂
It's definitely one of the best!

Pretty much the same deal when I took it in the late 2000s.
It’s the same.
SAT's are never mandatory to graduate. They're just college entrance exams.
This one is honestly hilarious .
Absolutely! 😄 - Maria
Amen. The humor doesn't lag.
I love how it builds, and once it has the momentum goes hard into camp in the best way.

Yeah, I agree with Willow. The kids don't act like that, mostly.
Yeah its more a sterotpye of a teenage mindset rather than actual deaging.

"she's in a very dangerous job." With a very high mortality rate.
presumably near 100%. it's certainly difficult to imagine any previous slayer ever died of natural causes.
Chocolate and muffins are two of my favourite foods, I couldn’t possibly choose between the two!

Joyce and Giles, that’s all I’m going to say…
My reading is also huge fine rather than huge book.
Sat are not mandatory
I've been been wondering that for years. Does she go to sleep at 8 wake up at 3 then slay. Does she only sleep 4 hours.
Esquire IS risque female photos, just not full on nudes - just very, very close.
Uuuuuhhhh... but... it's... not. This magazine is not even about sexy photos. Usually there are very good articles and exclusive interviews.
