No one saw at the close of the scene when Sweringan barked at the prostitutes about the passed out guy, when the girls contest it with rock-paper-scissors, to see whom would get him. this is all going on in the background, out of focus, or the seam closes with a high resolution close-up of Sweringan's face. Henry Lin nailed Wu so brilliantly. "Wu......big man" as he swaggers down the rear of the Gem. The language Milch used, there is NO way in hell in 2023 ANY major studio or streaming service would go near this dialogue with a 10 foot pole - yet the language the brilliant Milch used remains a FACT of the times. How can we learn from history, how the Chinese for example were paid less than blacks building the Transcontinental railroad? The brilliant 'Hell on Wheels' exposed, showed all these facts. That so many were used as cannon fodder in the mines and blown to pieces - 'Deadwood' imo, with 'Hell on Wheels' are two of the most consequential series of the modern era in terms of their storylines and the dialogue used. The left tearing down the statues of brilliant Confederate Officers, Nikky Haley approving her State remove the State Flag that had in the corner the Confederate BATTLE FLAG? Haley is typical of the sop RINO establishment that has run America into the ground. Series like the above examples remind us all, the good, the bad and pardon the pun ugly of America's expansion west.
Well, for anyone still curious, Wu said: 兄弟 which is "hing dai", which means "brothers" in this context. Hes speaking Cantonese, which is different from Mandarin. Finally figured it out with some help. Lol
That makes so much sense since he kept using Gwelio when talking about white which translates to "ghost man" it's a slur in Cantonese for whites. I wasn't sure if the show just didn't care about accuracy or if Wu was speaking Cantonese always since I really don't speak it or Mandarin.
Deadwood and Rome both got totally hosed. Two of the best shows HBO produced, but I guess since it wasn't the Mafia or fucking vampires people don't want to watch. At least Rome got to finish a complete story and didn't get left hanging like Deadwood even though it got cancelled early. Although they were forced to time jump in the second season, knowing it would be the last. There WOULD have been a Deadwood season 4 as HBO offered the creator the opportunity to close it out with a shortened 4th season, but I guess he refused. The Deadwood movie which came out in 2019 was okay. I do have to give all the actors credit for not missing a beat with these characters after all that time. Not a one of the actors seemed off their game for their character in that movie.
Nah he was great but defo not the best performance ever, James Gandolfini as tony soprano, Bryan Cranston as walter white, Antony Star as homelander, all are good amount better acting performances and those are just off top of my head there are more that are better.
It was a real departure from my being a fan of McShane when he played a loveable but opportunistic antiques dealer in the British show "Lovejoy." I wanted to live a life like that character had. Then I get the shock of my life seeing him in Deadwood as a cut throat devil. Either way he commands the screen. That change in his eyes in the closing seconds of this clip!

It was awesome when Al dispatched Johnny, Silas, and Dan wearing masks to assassinate the Tong on Wu's behalf. Wu shows up under Al's balcony and cuts off his hair stating "Wu, American." Al moved says "And she will clutch you to her bosom."
Back in those days when a Chinese call you a hengdai (brother), they actually mean it. They see you as a family member and will risk their lives for you. It's carried way more weight than a "bro" in modern English.
"Wu...big man"....ad he swaggers off. Henry Lin was just brilliant as Wu. This is imo the best series I have ever watched and geez there are so many others, 'Shield' 'The Wire', 'Justified', 'NYPD' etc. But what is so special about "Deadwood" was the story was predicated for the most part on heavily sourced facts, while fictional characters were also blended in. The acting from the actors is just mind blowing, William Sanderson's EB, another legend 'Doc' [Brad Dourif], you had one of the greatest family names brothers [Keith Carradine] who played 'Wild Bill Hickock', a actress who got het first real big break in 'Calamity Jane' [Robin Weirgert], Paula Malcolson as 'Trixie', Jeffrey Jones as 'Merrick' was hilarious, Titus Welliver also amazing as 'Adams', who could not return for the 2029 movie due to "Bosch" filming commitments, John Hawkes as "Sol", W.Earl Brown as the knife wielding "Dan Dority" and so on and on. Timothy Olyphant who when playing Raylan on 'Justified' was extremely gracious to bring back several actors to play guest roles, 'Dan', 'Harry Manning', the entire set of actors bonded to that degree. David Milch is arguably THE greatest writer in US history. Just look at the shows he cut his teeth on at a very early age. Deadwood exists in the Black Hills, and annexed as the show shows to South Dakota, there's plenty of gold in them there hills, and with no George Hurst, another character who is real, to threaten people. The television movie should have gone for 2 hours, SO many loose ends, and another brilliant actor made a re appearance at the end identified as "I'll tear your head clean off". Ian M is one of the best actors I have seen. His flexibility as an actor is akin to Streep, Denzel, and Judy Dench. Deadwood part 3? Sadly no. David Milch has been struck down with the truly insidious Parkinson disease, which will slowly rob this magic story teller of the incalculable gifts he has. But what a legacy he will leave. "Shwengen", and Wu's pigs will be no more. Deadwood is one of if not the most popular tourist destination in all of America. The town burned down twice, and the original Hotel Seth Bullock and Sol Starr built still stands, and as an aside it was one of if not the first Hotels in the spreading out US that had flushable toilets and water to every room via piping. I have never been there but on my 'bucket list' it is at the very top. And yes all - there STILL is gold in them there hills. Plenty of gold that has not to date been found. The scene between Al and Wu when Al is trying to find out 'who' stole Wu's opium couriers dope is one of the funniest pieces of acting I personally have ever scene...Al "who stole the fucking dop"? Who "who"? Al "who....who stole it you ignorant fuck"....PC and WOKE 'Deadwood' is not nor should it be. This s how everyone spoke to each other back then, it is part of our history, are their racial comments made absolutely, however this is how society operated at the time. To erase all of this in the claimed name of appeasing and 'righting previous injustices' is sickening as are tearing down Confederate and Founding Father statues. And in response 'Deadwood' was a ratings hit with the key demographics, and this should send a shudder up the mad left's social engineering agenda. Americans just want to be entertained, to laugh and enjoy what is an escape. DC, corporate America and the radical Democrats still turn up their noses, and in doing so it is 'them' who are on the wrong end of how Americans see themselves. This series remains epic. Try getting a pilot episode green light on 'Deadwood' series in 2021. Impossible.

I suppose it could be "dai" and maybe the dubbing just looks off(Wu also doesn't speak with traditional Mandarin tones), but there are no words in the Mandarin dictionaries I can find that says this means "brothers". It for sure is implied that hes saying they're tight, or they are in this together now, but it would be nice to know exactly what he said.
@Frank CastleThat makes a lot more sense. Some similarities, but not at all the same.
