"The 7900 GRE honestly feels like what the 7800xt should've been." Not really. The 7800XT is a beast of a card, especially at $500. That's a steal. I bought one and then bought a 7900XT 2 months later because I was so impressed with the 7800XT performance. I'm using the 7900XT right now but miss using the 7800XT even while using the 7900XT. That says something about how great the 7800XT is.
My 9 year old GTX 950 burned randomly yesterday after a power cuttoff, this GPU might be just what I needed for a replacement if it goes by that price in Europe... Thanks Steve :)
The GTX 950 and the RX 7900 are vastly different cards in terms of power. Literally anything from the last 2-3 years will blow your card away. Your 950 basically runs video apps and that's about it. The 7900 GRE is 787% more powerful than the GTX 950... Keep in mind your 950 is a 90w TDP while the 7900 GRE is at 260w so you need to ensure you have a 600w+ PSU. Good luck.
Check out the Rx 6600, it'll do fine for 1080p and probably a good idea to wait. From what I understand, they're dropping some pretty serious tech with the next gen, at the moment, Nvidia and amd are trying to ditch their timid incremental COVID slop before they drop the good shit. 6600 should be pretty cheap and has decent price to performance ratio.
From a 950 to this? Just because it broke? What? If you want to play some demanding game it makes sense but if that's not the case is a really bad choice at least the money is not a factor for you. I would say the 4060 is a better bet.
i have a similarly performing 6600xt, and though GRE does offer twice the performance, it still feels like not worth upgrading to. IMO, a proper and worthy upgrade would be something like a hypothetical 5070 or 8800XT
If they're sticking to the same logic they did with 6800xt->7800xt, then it's gonna be just as quick as the 7800xt and also pretty much the same price. :D@@timtzs
While the 7800 gre is still a great looking current-gen card, this is still making me very happy to have a 6800xt. The fact that it still keeps up with these cards is amazing to say the least.
Yeah if you have a card faster than the 3070 there is not a great reason to upgrade unless you have $ burning a hole in your pocket. This price segment is pretty good and will hopefully make prices continue to drop though for the people that have cards slower than or equal to the 3070. 4070 Super would be my pick for power efficiency and reflex but everyone has different needs. People that dont need reflex, RT or don't sit in a closed room would probably go AMD.
I might pick one of these if it's priced similarly enough to a 7800XT which with current prices in Australia is $800 AUD and the 4070 is $880, Ti being $1200
The power colour hellhound is 799 free shipping at pccg right now. Even if the gre is like 900 bucks it just doesn’t feel that worth it. I’m a sucker who bought a 7800xt two days ago…
@@NDSIser Yeah that's the card I'm referring to in my comment, I don't think other Australian sites really compare to PCCG's prices and service. I'm just gonna wait and see because even if the GRE is a little overpriced, it might cause a 7800XT price drop.
Yep, imagine those that bought the 7900 xt for the outrageous launch price. But hey, at least they got to play games for quite a time now at 4K with decent frame rates out of the box. No matter what new product one buys now, its certain that there will always be better or more efficient options at some point in the future. But how long one has to wait. I get the feeling some guys are waiting for the 90s and early 2000s sudden jumps due to unique innovation in gaming technology performance/price to performance era coming back somehow. But its not going to come back. 90s and early 2000s was, now its gone. But now is now and there is no revolutionary gpu hardware tech on the horizon that will change everything. At best its nowadays ai significantly boosting performance in certain cases.@@amspook
Been rocking a 7900XT since launch. Never cared for the frame rate hit of RT so I decided to go with AMD. Other than the occasional driver bugs I've been very happy.
I just ordered the 7900 gre steel legend to replace my 3060ti, sold that to my brother for his itx fractal node build. I wanted a white GPU for my all white PC, this seemed like a decent upgrade give or take for the white look so i went ahead & went for it. I don't care about ray tracing so i'm giving AMD a shot, i was interested in the 4070 ti super, but $900+ after taxes for a white one is crazy to me for that card. Can't wait to try AMD out for the 1st time. If it doesn't work out, I'll get the 4070 ti super later.
As someone still running a GTX 950, and as someone born in the year of the rabbit, and as someone who finds Jensen to be a bit of a hag, this appeals to me. Thanks, Steve! 💙
17:32 I think it is a very worth revisit though, because previous reviews i've seen when i almost bought this card a couple months ago placed it way closer to the 7800XT than now. More around a 8% or so difference on average, compared to your review's 15-18% Which makes me think they mightve done some driver optimization prior to globally launching it Looks like a pretty good value now
The previous reviews prolly used a reference model. Steve brought up how the partner models had some clock improvements. That would prolly account for the discrepancy.
Bought the 6950xt right before Starfield came out and dont regret it. But when building a computer for my girlfriend last week, I had no hesitations and got her the 7900 GRE. Fantastic card.
Interesting! The other Steve showed their 7900 GRE basically being much more on-part with the 7800XT. I wonder what accounts for the different results? Still not convinced it's worth a 10% price increase over the 7800 XT (and as a 6800 XT user, not enticed to upgrade at all), but I'm hoping that these much more sane pricing trends continue and the 7800 XT will be $450 & the GRE drop to $500 in another 2~3 months.
I dig a little bit! And most of the reviews shows more differences between 7800xt and 7900gre, only Hardwared unboxed shows so little margin of 5% i think the other steve is doing something wrong!
I think HUB used a reference model or a model with refernce clocks and GN (and Digital Foundry - who were also impressed) used factory overclocked variants, which seems to make a bigger than usual difference due to the huge number of cores and low TDP (it would appear).
$500 is the new $300 it seems. When you go below this price you get less and less price to perf. It feels really similar to when I got my gtx1060 several years ago which I believe had a $300 msrp at launch.
Not really. Im not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to pc parts but according to hardware unboxed charts/reviews the 6700xt has been the literal best fps per dollar card for the last year or so(its coincidentally usually around $300 as well)
@@ultimategohan1551 Where are you finding cards like that for sale? Up here in Canada, it seems like none of the retailers are still carrying 6x00 series cards.
@@ultimategohan1551 When the 7800XT released it was the best price to performance option. Your "literal" may be misplaced. "Used" might be better. The GRE is hardly more expensive and gives a clear jump.
Yep, I snagged a like-new 6950XT reference card for $400 last fall and let me tell you I have potentially never felt as justified in a purchase before. Holds up to be current gen high end cards, knocks all the new titles out of the park. Really couldn't ask for more, and got it for the price of a 4060.
7900xt is close to the 4080 in 1440p and 4k... Glad I grabbed 2 for $709. Looking forward to the next generation of cards. Hardly use RT except in Avatar and the finals, 7900xt has no problem running them.
Reminds me a lot of the old 7870 XT cards. Cut down version of the upper level card that punches above its weight and cost class. I put a 7870 XT in my old build a decade ago. This GRE sounds like its spiritual successor, which ill probably end up buying
I think it's official: I'm not gonna bother with the 7000 series. My 5800X3D/6800XT combo is slaying it at 1440p, and I generally don't bother with anything but brute force raster. Water blocks keep everything nice and cool, too.
@@ChessJourneyman Yeah. Because I can. Air is for candyasses who like cookie cutter PCs. AIOs are for slackassed chumps who can't properly plumb a build. GFYS.
I just could not squeeze the extra $150 for the 7900xt. I got it because it seemed to do better in dx11 than a 7800xt. Plus, old RX 590 finally bit the dust, R.I.P. Thank You for all the hard work you do Gamers Nexus Team and Steve in particular for his colorful personality.
Micro Center still has some residual 6950XTs for $550. I was planning on getting one of those but AV1 encoding and a couple extra years of updates in case I want to throw this in an entertainment PC a few years down the road makes it worth the average couple percentage points the 6950XT might have in some titles.
A few system builders local to me in EU have had these as available options in their towers for a while now. Good to see it hit the open market as ive been wanting one of these since I found out they were a thing like 2/3 months ago. Always have and always will be an advocate for the low power but high compute/render options. running 65w cpus since I traded up from the i5 3570k to 4460 almost 10 years ago.
Yeah right, tell that to nvidia...My 5700xt was around the same 500-550 price point the 7800xt and 7900gre are running around right now. This is a breath of fresh air.
11:18 Thank you for including the 1660 ti on the chart comparison. Now I have a better metric on how the 7900 gre compares to 1660ti which I am currently using.
Truth be told, the real pricing structure for these cards should be this to be good value: 7700xt = $379 7800xt = $449 7900 GRE = $499 7900 XT = $649 7900 XTX = $799 I am sure the cards will get to those prices but these should be the current retail prices and things would be good for AMD. I'll definitely consider snagging a 7900 GRE if it hits the $500 mark. Otherwise, might be on the look out for a 6800XT if I can procure one for around $350. Microcenter did have some 6900XTs for $400 but they sold out quick.
Thanks GN, your guy's analysis and videos prove time and time again to be miles ahead of everyone else on this platform, can always count on getting a precise placing of every GPU (Jesus there are so many pls stop releasing them for a little while)
it has been very annoying and frustrating trying to find a successor to my 3080 12gb. Not a whole lot of products are able to justify the price they are being offered for. Also, with an 800w PSU (80+titanium) I only have a few GPUs that i can plug-and-play without being forced to use that god awful 12vhpwr connector, or be forced to find another PSU with the pcie 5.0 rating so i can get a 12vhpwr cable included so as to have less points of failure. Basically, Nvidia priced its own customers out of an upgrade by forcing the 12vhpwr failures onto us. Honestly, I would probably would've purchased a 4080 Super if it weren't for that new POS cable. AMD is looking enticing.
Damn, Seeing EVGA still in your review charts opens the somewhat healed heart wound yet again. RIP king(pin) your performance and consumer friendly nature was legendary.
UV could be interesting for me. Having the same power limit shared between the 60 CU 7800 XT and the 80 CU 7900 GRE must be a limiting factor where every mV saved is an FPS gain.
still feeling really good about that day 1 4090 purchase but this is very interesting for an SFF PC. I like the lower power consumption and smaller form factor of the 4070 super, but your review makes the 7900 GRE a compelling option due to the massive uplift in performance at a slightly lower price point.
I might still spoil myself and grab the 7900 XT, but if I decide to pinch a few pennies, I'll grab the 7900 GRE. $549 feels like a good price for it compared to the 7800 XT. I like RT in Cyberpunk as much as the next person, but... I play a lot of other games that don't even use RT, or have a good implementation of it.
Honestly! Love my 7900 GRE matched with 64 gd ddr5 n ryzen 5 7600x blends my build over all greatly for vr n gaming n streaming! At least I'm happy with it
The problem is that while in many games gains performance Cyberpunk and Dying Light are pretty much built on RTX libraries which favour Nvidia hardware architecture widely…some games don’t use plain DirectX RayTracing and in those games AMD will always come second…
Agreed, I was hoping it would be included because this card inserts itself into a very crowded space with lots of recent price adjustments. A comparison against 7800 XT, 4070 and 4070 Super would be very useful
Should also be adjusted for energy price for, say, two years of moderate use somewhere with moderately priced electricity. That would probably make the Nvidia cards more competitive on value without RT.
a little tip for you guys regarding the rotating mannequin good sirs. wind a string around the base that rotates out of camera. slowly pull it manually. easy, and free :)
I've had to delay my desktop replacement a few months, just starting to shop around, and since I don't intend playing in 4K and I'm not fussed by Ray Tracing, it looks like this will do everything I need just fine. Exciting!
I have a 7900 XTX OC edition and 30 games on steam with almost 20 on GOG I can tell you that it folds the 4080 like a chair on raster. My brother is my roomate with a 4080 and the only game he has that beats me is Cyber and Alan Wake we play most of the same games. What they don't tell you is with his 4080 Overclocked did not make as much of a diff the 7900 XTX Overclocked slaps those 4080 cheeks.
It looks like for those going for a SFFPC, the best option is the 4070 super since it sips power in comparison to the GRE and even 7800XT and in a small build you need less power consumption to reduce heat and consequent noise.
I'd almost given up hope on always recommending "the $500-600" card, and upgrading sooner (2-tiers, so either one gen and one tier, or two gens, same tier) instead of paying $800 for an idea of future proofness. This looks like a great card, and I'm into it's TDP versus it's performance, too. Given its assumed binned nature, I wonder what its undervolted performance would be. I build mITX and custom cooled mITX, so potential for efficiency is always a top priority in my book.
@@audiophizile13 220w is great, but buying Nvidia has become a sorta sketchy endeavor, IMO. I don't think the efficiency boost is worth the premium. I think a 4070S is good for someone who only really goes for the latest AAA titles that'll have good DLSS/RT support, which really isn't me. It's still a good bet for very tight cooling builds though, like squeezing a single 240s capabilities. If that's what I was going for right now, it'd be hard to overlook. I just find Nvidia's SW based planned obsolescence (via FOMO) to be a bit aggravating, even if it only applies to those latest titles, as mentioned. With the HW based planned obsolescence certainly not winning any favor, either.
@@EdwardViaTomato I just could not pay $500+ for a card that does not have 256 bit bus and 16gb of ram. I to play older titles, dx11 mostly, and noticed it did much better than the 7800xt.
For the price point it's actually feeling like a decent value. I kind of wonder if the 7900XT and 7900XTX will go down in price against the 7900GRE, because it would really drive in well if the percentage gains from the 7900GRE to the 7900XT and 7900XTX matched the jumps in price.
I managed to buy last piece in a local e-shop for a discounted price that was lower then some of the 7800XTs which in this case make it a great value card. Now when they are selling the last bits this card might be very good catch given not many people know about this card and there is low demand for it. I am going to pair it with Ryzen 9 5900X so we'll see how well it's going to perform. But I managed to build this system under 1250 USD in Europe which is - given our higher electrics prices - very solid budget power build.
8:51 Thank you for saying this Steve, i was wondering wether i should consider moving on from my 3070 seeing how games now need more than 8GB, but right now I'm still perfectly fine with it like you said. i shall wait and pass this generation. 😃
I picked up one of these (ASRock Challenger edition) for the price of a 7800XT at the start of the year. OC: Undervolt of 90mV stable in all games (could go even lower in some titles). I run mine with a slightly reduced power limit. Clocks run between 2400MHz (e.g. Witcher3 on ultra +) and 2700MHz (e.g. Assassins Creed Odyssey). Memory clock: this seems to be where AMD has 'pinched' the card: limited to max 66MHz extra. Overall a great performer for the money, reacts really well to undervolting.
Haven't built a pc in over 10 years. Received most of my parts last Friday except for a gpu. The gpu is the only thing I haven't ordered yet. Cant really make up my mind of what card I want. AMD has finally caught up a little to Nvidia.
Already got it for a month and I absolutely dig the design and size but I'm still waiting to save up for the CPU, RAM and PSU to see how good it is. :D Fun fact, got it on sale for the same price as 7800 xt
All models of the 7900gre is sold out at the micro center near me, even the highest priced Sapphire Nitro version. That speaks volumes about the 7900gre!
So glad I decided to sit out the 40 series , Nvidia using a lower memory bus than usual (except for 4090) just didnt sit right with me and you can see the negative impact as resolution increases.
AMD sucks for AI. I've looked. At best you can get maybe 1/5th the performance as Nvidia cards, PLUS a lot of stuff being worked on to work with AMD will only work in Linux as the devs making the programs to emulate CUDA cores with AMD cards seem to only care about developing programs for Linux.
the reason why the 7700xt and the 7800xt are so close in oerformance is because the 7800xt is actually just a 7800 while the 7900GRE, is just actually an 7800XT. AMD upped one position on naming to justify price increases. Going further, the 7900XT should have just been a 7900 with the 7900XTX should have been just a 7900XT. The prices and performance made more since there.
I am not in the market for a GPU, but if i were the GRE we be at the top of my list. I bought a 6950 last summer and it looks like it has very similar performance, which is pretty good. I paid just over $500 during one of the big sales. I wonder if this release will see some price drops on remaing stocks of the 6950, at $475 or less that would be deal of the year potential.
I'm upgrading my x370 board. Just ordered one of these along with a Ryzen 9 5950x CPU. I should be good for awhile with this tandem. I can upgrade the motherboard in a couple of years to a x470 for an added performance uplift. I got to time my builds better though. I should have initially waited for the x470 to drop. Although I had already waited 8 years and was just ready. I was on the AMD 4-core Phenom that I built 2009. The fun was passing me by..... I just didn't see the 5700X3D as suitable since I'll be able to convert the 5950X to a great server CPU when the time comes. 16 cores? Damn. It's already a server CPU. If anyone is familiar, my case is an Enthroo Pro extended tower with plenty of storage drive slots. I bought it by accident when I did the initial build. Instead of sending it back, I just went with it. It's heavy AF!

Yeah, but OC'd. I think they could probably push them clocks a tad higher.
are you saying if AMD had a normal name scheme, it would be called 7800 XTX?
"The 7900 GRE honestly feels like what the 7800xt should've been."
Not really.
7900SE would be the real name. It still use Same gpu chip as 7900xt and 7900xtx… just heavily cut down.

Thanks for all the work you do GN! It's nice to see non-clickbaity, consumer-first content in the computer space
Thanks, Steve.
I was confused when I saw all the "7900GRE RELEASED!!!" notifications. Thanks for that info right off the top, Steve+Team!
My 9 year old GTX 950 burned randomly yesterday after a power cuttoff, this GPU might be just what I needed for a replacement if it goes by that price in Europe...
Thanks Steve :)
its almost 700 Euros here in Croatia
@johnpen269 of course lol I knew it would be expensive here in Europe especially ngreedia GPUs lol
Thanks Steve!
This Pulse RX 7900 GRE reminds me of my own Pulse RX 6600 with how close the fans are to each other, but with obviously 3 fans instead of 2.
actually very happy to see this, and hope it does in fact drop the prices in the 7800xt
As someone still rocking a 5700xt, The GRE actually seems enticing.
i have a similarly performing 6600xt, and though GRE does offer twice the performance, it still feels like not worth upgrading to. IMO, a proper and worthy upgrade would be something like a hypothetical 5070 or 8800XT

My 5700 xt is still pulling its weight. These cards age like fine silicon
6800 xt was the sweet spot for me with power and performance
same and now that amd has introduced frame generation i went from 4k 40-60fps max settings in most games to 100+ fps.

@@NDSIser Hey now, don't feel bad, 7800xt is a good card, great even
Yep, imagine those that bought the 7900 xt for the outrageous launch price.
How was it?!

Time to upgrade
17:32 I think it is a very worth revisit though, because previous reviews i've seen when i almost bought this card a couple months ago placed it way closer to the 7800XT than now. More around a 8% or so difference on average, compared to your review's 15-18%
Which makes me think they mightve done some driver optimization prior to globally launching it
Looks like a pretty good value now
The previous reviews prolly used a reference model. Steve brought up how the partner models had some clock improvements. That would prolly account for the discrepancy.
I wanted one and bought it. I was noticing the different cards have between a 245-268 watt board power. So depending on model it will change.
I just got the RX 7900 GRE Pure OC and with the new driver and the potential to overclock the memory this card is a beast for the price.

Truth be told, the real pricing structure for these cards should be this to be good value:
7700xt = $379
7800xt = $449
7900 GRE = $499
7900 XT = $649
7900 XTX = $799

it has been very annoying and frustrating trying to find a successor to my 3080 12gb.
The 4070 super has far better performance per watt.

AMD upped one position on naming to justify price increases. Going further, the 7900XT should have just been a 7900 with the 7900XTX should have been just a 7900XT. The prices and performance made more since there.
7800xt and 7700xt are not close in perf..
@@roki977 you should go back and watch every reviews instead of talking out your a$$
@@GamingOnArc i dont know what you are talking about, 7800xt is well over 20% faster than rx 7700xt and that is a lot..
No the gre has less bandwidth and lower clocks which brings it close to 7800xt
@@noticing33 disagreeing doesn’t make you correct
I am not in the market for a GPU, but if i were the GRE we be at the top of my list. I bought a 6950 last summer and it looks like it has very similar performance, which is pretty good. I paid just over $500 during one of the big sales. I wonder if this release will see some price drops on remaing stocks of the 6950, at $475 or less that would be deal of the year potential.
upgrading from my 6650 XT. Cannot wait!
Interesting, there is quite the difference in results from your review and Hardware Unboxed. In their review this card was always trailing the 4070 Super.
Hi steve, or gamersnexus. I think you should also add rendering performance as some people use a system for editing or rendering.
