Thank God MMW formed as they are one of the only true jazz groups around, using the medium to create a sound and music of their own. Best group of my generation!

I went to the Grand Rapids show. It was absolutely amazing. I like Phish, but these guys were ridiculous. I think Billy Martin is one of- if not THE- best drummer I've ever seen live. Such a light touch, amazing grooves, endlesss ideas.

Medeski is a ridiculous...amazing. Billy Martin is a complete badass, and his snare sounds AMAZING. And Chris Wood just fucking kills on bass. What a trio. The modern Cream.

    hey jaydude,
it could be anything with that guy...
i saw/heard him use a straw in a 7-11 big gulp cup lid as percussion at show years ago...he ran it back and forth through the lid to make an interesting little rthym.

@superchuds Don't sweat it. Maybe "traditional jazz" would be a better phrase. :) I think MMW is exactly the kind of band it wants to be, and I like that there's no easy label to place on their music. I find that's a common thread among many of my favorite musicians - that they more or less create a new language of their own, one that exists outside of conventional genres.

I mean, it's pretty groove/jazz oriented, I know what you mean, they have such a great trio vibe, but really lock down into some heavy shit when it comes to grooving.

It does seem asd though Billy Martin is holding the band back in terms of really stretching out. Even when he solos much of it sounds like grooves and patterns which are worked out in his head beforehand. As opposed to really improvising. He plays pretty straight ahead. Id lilke to hear Jack Dejohnette on the drums with the other two cats.

Gotta say you couldn't be more wrong. Billy is one of the tightest pocket players around. The best part of having him at a festival is the other drummers can't help but come see him play. Give you a chance to say hey!
