There is something particularly charming about Wayne Laryea as "Johnny", they could hardly have picked a better actor :-). Despite all the negative comments about Pipkins going around the Web, I think it's fairly clear that the producers made a tremendous effort on this programme. They made some mistakes, particularly in the puppet designs, but I think that is due to them exploring territory that hadn't been explored before; the puppet designs are actually quite ambitious; a little too ambitious for the time; by trying to make them too realistic for the budget, they dipped into the "uncanny valley". But the fact that all the puppets were redesigned in subsequent seasons shows the dedication to quality and the ability to learn from the experience. The music is beautifully done, the stories thoughtful and carefully written, and the voice acting is superb. I loved Pipkins as a child, and I realise I still do :-).
He went on to present a thing called Ace Reports during the early days of the Children's ITV strand called Watch It. Used to go out on either a Tuesday or Wednesday at 4.45pm.
@@Jasonm25870 Tuesday, it was - one of the slots previously used for Magpie! Started out as Ace, morphed into Ace Reports, then became CBTV Channel 14! How is his surname pronounced! Never heard anyone say it - even him!
Never really understood why the presenters were given characters to play, rather than appear as themselves - Wayne as Johnny, Jonathan Kydd as Tom and Paddy O’Hagan as Peter. Fair enough for the guest characters like a pre-Audrey Sue Nicholls as Mrs. Muddles, perhaps to avoid younger viewers confusing her with her Rentaghost character Mrs. Popov. I preferred the more cartoon like incarnations of the puppets - the first Topov looked like a burns victim! Yikes! The second Pig’s ears actually resembled shrivelled up bacon rashers lol. Loved the lesser used puppets like Moony the badger too.
I have volumes 1-3 too and I actually recommend Ebay for Pipkins dvds, It's a lot cheaper than Amazon UK and a lot of the dvds are new I'm getting Volume 4 for christmas and I live in the US as well, Ebay has one for 23 dollars
I think the only disadvantage about the series is just that the puppets weren’t really that well made in the beginning but later on in the series I think they progressed a bit and were better made.
You'd think that being a kids' TV programme they'd get a more child-friendly puppet van than the one they used here- looks like a fucking hearse! No wonder those kids look bloody petrified as it drives past. It was probably budgetary reasons; rented and the only one they could find.

Brilliant programme. Loved Pipkins still do. Johnnie was a great chactcer. I remember crying my eyes out when Mr Pipkin died.
I still enjoy watching the man himself acting in those 60s Hammer Horror films !
Network are the saviours of British TV. What a great company.
Johnny (Wayne Laryea) was so right for the part after Inigo died. Loved this man when I was a child.

Thanks Mike for your comments. I too loved Pipkins and Johnny.

Hartley Hare is the best, he's smart, witty and drier than Noel Coward😂💋. Why oh why didn't they make more, it was hilarious and quite clever!
Hartley was just superb..so funny
'Bertha is barmy she ought to join the army' ...I'll never forget that line.

The human actors in Sesame Street also had character names rather than just using their own.

there are more episodes of pipkins that Nigel and Jonathan have, so why can't we have some more pipkins DVDs?
