- SAE Battery Connectors - I show you how to install the connector on to your BMW R1250 GS Adventure motorcycle battery.
The SAE Connector is a simple 'off the shelf' wiring harness that taps into the battery and allows you to use and/or charge electronic accessories such as smartphones, gopro batteries etc. I use this lead to connect my MotoPressor Pocket Pump to inflate my tires/tyres and I also use it to charge the motorcycle battery using my Optimate Battery Charger.

The Boomerang Biker...
Extremly funny that I am sitting here, in Munich, at work, which is in the Anton-Bitt-Bogen and if you google, you will see, that my bureau is about 20 m (yes 20 Meters) away from BMW Motorcycle.
Funny, because I bought myself a 1250 GSA and want to know how to charge her, without using the DIN-Connection and am looking at you, explaining this wonderfully and sitting on the other side of the word in Australia.
Very well done! Thank you! Greetings from Munich
Glad it helped mate and thanks for leaving the great comment. Email me your address and I'll send you one of my Buff neck tubes and a sticker. Would be cool to have some on display in Deutschland... theboomerangbiker @gmail . com (don't leave the gaps). Cheers, Nick
Well done! You very clearly showed me exactly how to install the exact same SAE connector on my R1250RT. Thanks so much (from California USA). 👍
My pleasure mate, I'm glad it helped. I've toured through California, amazing place. Even went to Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch in Carmel
@@theboomerangbiker1966 You (and Clint Eastwood) picked one of the most beautiful spots on the California coast! We live about an hour from the Carmel/Monterey area. Riding “over the hill” through the redwoods and out to the coast is definitely a favorite ride. It never gets old! Thanks again, I really wanted a “direct to battery” connection and you made it easy. Carry on. 👍
Just bought a GS today, was looking under the seat for the battery! Lesson learned. Cheers.
Great mate, thanks for the comment...
Hi Nick wish I had found your vide 2 hours ago as it would of saved me a lot of wasted time. Having owned two air cooled GS previously I decided to buy the new Pan America Special. Big mistake because I didn't like it and traded it in for my first LC GS. Brought a new Optimiser lead and decided to fit it. Well as you know the battery positive lead is a nightmare to get to and after trying to ram lead with fuse box into a small space and not able to get inner cover back on I gave up and stripped it all out. But now I see from your video that I should of connected to the screw under the red cap. Every day's a school day. You Aussies always sound English to me 😉😂 Ted You've got another sub now. Thanks.
Hi mate, thanks for the great comment and glad my video finally helped you. I was born in the north of England but migrated to Australia around 20 years ago, prior to that I lived in New Zealand, so my accent is a bit of a mix! Have a great day, cheers, Nick
Christ on a bike. That Optimate just brought memories flooding back 😀
Not seen one of those for years.
Ha ha, what a comment, you win mate!

Nick. Thank you so much for making the time to share this very useful video. I do know how hard is to make / edit those video of yours. I truly appreciate how you make the camera angel easy for us to see the cable / connectors. Very easy to follow. Thanks heaps mate.
Glad it was helpful Rami, thanks for the feedback. Cheers, Nick TBB
Cheers for posting this vid, going to follow your tips this weekend. 👍👍
You're welcome mate, it's such an easy mod to do, but had many benefits. Drop me a line if you need any more help or details...
Another great vid mate I enjoy them keep them coming.
Thanks Craig, I'll do my very best!
Thank you sir 🌟
To all the riders... Be safe out there 🙏
You're welcome!
Thank you Nick. Very easy video to follow. I know how hard to organise those videos, including editing and preparing. I particularly like the way you made the camera angel very clear to follow the cables / connectors etc. thank you mate.
Thanks Rami, I always look forward to your comments and support. Have a great day mate. Cheers, Nick
HI Nick a better way is to swap out the DIN plug from the handle bar with a usb port, then move the DIN to where you had you plug zip tied to the side of the frame.
Hi mate, thanks for the tip. My method works better for me, I already use a DIN to USB adapter in the cockpit to charge batteries in my tank bag. I use the SAE direct to the battery to for charging the bike battery and for taking power out to charge my drone batteries in my tailpack via a 12v-240v inverter. Cheers, Nick
Nice routing advice. My RT has the same box and I was worried about fitting the SAE pigtail in such a tight space.
No worries, glad that helped you
Thanks, perfect explanation! Short and brilliant!
Glad you found it helpful mate, cheers!
SAE = Society of Automotive Engineers... an organization that dictates many of the automotive and off highway design standards in the USA. Much like DIN in Europe.
Hey Nick…. I’m so confused. I see all these videos of guys like you installing SAE and DIN outlets on their GS. I have a new 2022 GSA and it has a DIN to CANBUS and an SAE already installed. I use the SAE to charge using my optimate 4. Is there any reason I would install another SAE with the inline fuse?
I have the same rocky creek compressor and am wondering if there’s any harm in using the connected they provide with no fuse or if I would be better off purchasing a seperate connector with a fuse?
Hmmm, I had same thought and so fitted one with a fuse. You could cut the wire and solder in a fuse if you have something spare, but to be honest it would probably cost more to buy the items rather than a full lead! Good luck Melanie!
Excellent video Mate.
Thanks Stephan, I'm looking forward to seeing a video of your recent trip on your channel...
Dear Nick please help me out, I am the proud owner of a R1200GSA. I went to do what you have by fitting a SAE plug. I was told that it would damage the electrical system on a BMW. Unless you buy a BMW CHARGER. Please help me out I’m confused. Thank you
Don't worry, the 'expert advice' is incorrect, you will only have issues if you try to plug a non canbus charger into the DIN socket. SAE direct to the battery bypasses the bike's canbus...
Hi. Great video. Have done the install. If I want to use an extension cable to use further away from the bike, is there an issue with reverse polarity. Greetings from Ireland
Thanks mate, appreciate the feedback. I run mine with a long extension lead, no dramas at all...
Great video….but in the US, SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers.
Thanks mate, that must be an American acronym, appreciate the heads up.
I would har thought that the bike came as standard with a DIN 12V (Hella) socket..?
Yes it does, on the dash but it won't run a compressor without tripping the canbus and you need a canbus specific optimate to charge the battery and they aren't reliable. This solution bypasses the canbus. Hope that explanation helps. Nick
Great video Nick. Running a 15A fuse. Do you think that is enough? Or too much?
Thanks Andrew - I guess it all depends on the appliance going in/out?
@@theboomerangbiker1966 Using the rocky mountain pump. It seems to say it uses 11-13 A so that's probably spot on
Thanks for the fool proof explanation. Out of curiosity, what else have you connected. I saw there was a second cable on the positive. Can't recall seeing this on my bike.
The other question - why didn't you connect to the battery positive directly? Sorry, may seem a stupid question. I'm just not that much of a bike tech person.
Hi mate, first off, there's no such thing as a stupid question, but I can give you stupid answers :) Couple of points then... Good pick-up on the "what else have you connected?" that's powering my Hex exCAN which controls my auxiliary lights via the 'whizz wheel' on the handlebars (must get around to doing a show & tell on that). And... there's a handy positive terminal post behind the round red plastic cover that's easier to reach, rather than going on to the top on the battery. How's that for an answer, good enough? Cheers, Nick
@@theboomerangbiker1966 thanks mate, couldn't have asked for a better answer. cheers Chris
Great video Nick. Question: does disconnecting the battery cause any issues with the bike electronics? I have visions of fitting the cable for my trickle charger and then finding that I can’t start the bike!
Alan Mascall none whatsoever. Use some electrical tape to wrap (isolate) the main leads/cables when you disconnect them, for piece of mind... Thanks for the sub, cheers, Nick
@@theboomerangbiker1966 Cheers for info Nick 😊
@@BiGVern1958 a pleasure mate, happy to help
Does this drain the battery when not in use?
I think you answered your own question Rod. If you leave something plugged in (in use, drawing current) whilst the bike is isn't running, then yes, it will drain the battery. For example, using a tyre compressor, always have the bike running. I'm just about to install a smart USB cable direct to the battery that automatically switches off when the amps hit a lowest threshold, ensuring there's always enough power to crank the engine amd start the bike...
I would like to see a vid on charging drone batteries as you mention here. Right now i run a cigarette charger from the cockpit DIN to my tank bag and plug in the drone charger there. When I do that then I can not charge my USB items. I am now looking to run a cigarette plug off the SAE plug (like you showed in this vid) and charge from the back but I need to make sure I unplug it when I cut off the engine so I don’t drain the battery
Coming soon mate, stay tuned.. !
👏👏👏👏👏
Just curious, if you have the Optimate, can you just connect the charger's DIN connector straight into the DIN socket on the bike?
Yes you can but it has to be a canbus compatible model. Mine is 25 years old!
@@theboomerangbiker1966 Oh, OK, got it!
Thanks for the info.
Glad I could help, cheers, Nick
hi, do you think the wires are capable of jump starting another GS ?
Hi, what's that air pump brand/model that you have? I am looking for something small to carry with me always... I guess you just striped away all the plastic bits from it to make it smaller right?
Hi mate, it's a mini 12v unit. I'm doing an unbox, review and test in the next few days. Stay tuned...!
