the clients are a young couple with an infant and they approached us with very simple requirements. They wanted 4 bedrooms, a single car park and cozy living spaces. The site is a 15m by 15m, roughly 2400sft, garden facing square plot with main access towards west, located in a gated & quiet posh residential locality in Indore.
In terms of planning, because the requirements were less relative to the scale of the site And the clients wanted cosy spaces, we decided wrap the structure's footprint with gardens on 3 sides on the ground floor.
So, the drawing and dining each have an adjacent garden, and there is a provision for kitchen garden at the back connected via a gallery. in addition to this, the house features terrace gardens on all floors. which reflects our firm's ethos - emphasis on the greens and thinning the line between inside & outside.
Also, we seperated the vehicular and the pedestrian entries to maintain the connection between the greens on ground floor. One enters he lobby, via a discerning landscaped pedestrian court amdist these greens.
a service entry has been provided from the car park giving easy access to a grocery passing window into the kitchen. the ground level is split into two levels, segregating the public and the semi-public spaces.
Again, when you look at the total footage, it is around 5k sft of built up area to be occupied by a family of 3. so we wanted to open the inside volume to maintain visual connection between the upper and lower floors. This essentially became the driving concept for the design - the conversing double heights. we introduced a double height over the drawing spanning from ground to first floor and another double height over the living spanning from 1st to 2nd floor.
the drawing double height faced west. we wanted to maximise daylight & garden views via full height glazings, yet keep a check on the harsh sun and heat gain. thus, we introduced a bridge in the middle and screened it with wooden louvres. The bridge acts as a shade or chajja connecting the master bedroom to the main terrace garden on the first floor adjacent to the living, and the wooden screen doubled up as the feature element of the facade creating a play of shadows throughout the day in the double height volume.
Another feature element of the facade, adjacent to this wooden screen, is an exposed concrete wall with a slit window in the master bedroom. the concrete wall reduces the heat gain, while the slit window makes way for ventilation, daylight and garden view for the master bedroom. A private balcony for the master bedroom breaks the monotony and frames the main facade. in sync with the raw concrete and wooden finishes, we then added exposed bricks to the exterior material palette.
the double height over the living on the first floor faced North, and thus we introduces a number of slit openings to invite the very favoured Northern daylight. And as a result, and this is the most valued feedback, the clients hardly have to switch on any artificial lights inside the house during daytime, minimizing electricity costs in addition to creating a tranquil vibe.
keeping in mind, the clients' preference for neutral tones and affinity for wooden finishes, the interior material pallete comprised of greys, whites, wood, concrete textures and blacks.
Upholestry, artifacts and murals accounted for colour pops in the living spaces.
All bathrooms were done in a combination of textured tile and marble featuring washbasins custom made in stone and mirrors touching the ceiling.
Ceilings are done mostly in white, accented at a few spaces by wooden finishes and greys.
Floors feature imported marbles and full body terrazzo tiles in cool colours to complement the warmth added by wooden accents.
we believe that it is the personalization of a house, which makes it a home. and as such our designs are an attempt to provide the occupants a canvas which they can then render with elements to their appeal and shape their lives.
