Hi Audrey, Mrs. Q here. 👋 I live in your same zip code. 😊 I'm new to gardening. I am so happy someone local shared your Facebook and channel here! I am having a terrible time with things in my raised beds. This is the first year for the beds. My peppers look terrible. I started them from seed in my aerogarden. They did great through the hardening off period, but now that I've planted them out, all the leaves are falling off. I keep thinking it's the soil I chose to fill the beds. I used Kellog Raised Bed soil. It's so full of wood chips. It seems like there's hardly any dirt. I also used Scott's topsoil. It is finer than the kellog but seems to be about the same make up. I bought some in ground garden soil for a couple of pots for my front porch. It is by far better (more dirt) than the other 2 brands I bought. Do you think I could save the peppers by digging around the root ball and adding the better soil? Maybe take them completely out and put them in the ground? I'm considering abandoning the raised beds this year to compost and build some actual soil. Help!

Hi! I’m so happy to have you following along! 😊 Yes, it does sound like it’s probably your soil that is the issue. Most of the time bag soils when they have a lot of bark like that they are not great for most of veggies because the mixes dry out super quickly, you are better off having a mixture of mostly topsoil. I would recommend digging them up and planting them directly into the ground and you will probably have much better success with them that way this year. Then you can work on getting better soil in your raised beds for the following year. I think your peppers should be fine though if you take them out and transplant them into the ground this season.

Are there any lettuce that I can grow from seed? Zone 10a

Yes, I actually recommend sowing all lettuce directly from seed. The only thing you may run into this time of year is that lettuce is a cool season crop, so it will grow better in whether that is cooler. You can try testing it out and growing it in the summer, but it may not do as well. It’s worth a shot, it would definitely benefit from being in the shade during the hot afternoon though. If you search the word “lettuce” on my UA-cam channel, you will find the full video I have that shows how to directly sow lettuce by seed.
