    If you have never seen a play like this, you need to check out the 2006 Outback Bowl between Iowa and Florida. There was an onside where they made this same call, and even the announcers were furious. To be fair, the officiating that game was abysmal throughout. The entire crew got suspended, and it is the reason that minor conference refs are not allowed to officiate power 5 bowl games anymore.

    When I was an official, they said that the philosophy (ie, how "they" want the rule interpreted and called on the field) is that on "full" kicks, offside should only be called if the player was touching the ground beyond the line, but on "obvious onside situations", it should be officiated as a "plane", and any part of the kicking team that breaks the line should be considered offside. At the same time, calling this just because a finger or facemask is over the line would fall into the "don't be too good" category. I think most supervisors would expect to see a head, torso, or leg obviously over the line before giving a "good call" rating on this. At the same time, replay can't "fix" a call this close.

    • @HorrorKidd88
      @HorrorKidd88 Рік тому +2

      if this is the case for "obvious onside situations" then the refs should tell the kicking team what they are looking for and will call it offsides when they see it. Looking at that still, it looks like it was one of the top 2 players who were called. In an onside kick situation, officials at all levels are taught to be ultra strict when it comes to offside as every extra inch can make all the difference. This is opposed to a normal long kickoff when an extra inch won't make any difference and offside will only be called when a player is blatantly beyond the line when the ball is kicked.

    😂 the Arkansas State player jumped right in front of the side judge before the kicker made contact with the football. If the side judge can't see the kicker make contact with the football, because another player's body is obstructing his view, that means the obstructing player is offsides. No one on the kickoff team can move passed the line before the kicker makes contact. It's a close play, but you can literally see the player obstruct the refs view of the ball before the kicker's foot hits it. Both Arkansas State players are head and shoulders over the line before the ball is kicked.

But the rule doesn’t (or shouldn’t) have some provision that the degree to which a player is over the line is dependent on the game status or consequence of the penalty. Why give this flexibility in interpretation to the kicking team? If they broke the rule they deserve to suffer the consequences. It’s a shame for them that they may have only been a very slight bit offside but there isn’t an exception for “just a little bit “. The question is if he was offside or not. There are plenty of penalties that get passed up especially in the NFL, in fact the NFL has actually made statements in the past saying they care more about the entertainment of the sport than anything else. Refs will many times overlook small penalties like the O-line holding or some unnecessary roughness as long as it's not too bad. The guy was saying this shouldn't have been a call because it was high stakes, late in the game, and there was barely, if any, call to be made. games arent totally rigged but there are a lot of calls that influence the game for certain people to help win or to make teams have a tie to go into overtime.

      the betting money is going to be so huge with legalized sports books in a lot of states, it's going to be impossible for players, refs, and coaches not to be influenced by the line and over/unders. You can already see shadows of coaches making decisions based on them.

    The camera angle is not directly down the line and this angle prevents a valid determination of whether the players were offsides. the official making the call is directly on the line but on the near sidelines. At 51 seconds you can see him on the line with R on his back. He simply looks down the line and sees if anyone crosses before the kick. The shadows offsides comment is truly funny. great sense of humor.

    Games aren’t fixed. Refs are just bad at their job. The dude who called this is not a professional referee. The NCAA should pay to have permanent referee staffers who know the rules in and out to make calls like these less common.
