Don’t care if no one reads this, but I’m in tears right now and gotta let it all out. I fucking love God of War. I’ve been a fan of it since I was a little kid and I’ve grown up alongside Kratos. I got to see all his development happen alongside my own, and that’s why it matters so much to me seeing Kratos finally get his happy ending. I wasn’t ever a new fan who saw it happen after the fact, I was there when he slaughtered his family, I was there when he acceded to godhood, when he failed his mother and Deimos despite his newfound strength, when he was betrayed and when he brought Olympus to its knees. When he made the first selfless act of his life and gave hope to a broken people. I remember sitting on my dad’s lap as he played through the original trilogy, we both loved the series and it taught me what beautiful stories could come from video games. I remember when he finally passed the controller to me and said it was my turn. These memories I have with my dad mean a damn whole lot to me, and so when GOW4 came out and I saw that now Kratos was a father…I broke into tears because all those childhood memories came flooding back to me. And now having finished Ragnarok, I’m sitting here sobbing like a baby because the relationship between Kratos and Atreus reminded me so much of my relationship with my own father, and how just like Atreus would fight against fate to save Kratos I feel like I’d do the same thing for my dad. This series means everything to me. Kratos means everything to me, and I can’t thank Santa Monica enough for giving me and my father these fun memories together. I need to call him after this, he needs to know how much I love him.
Summed up how I feel about kratos the god of war series. pandora told kratos that hope makes everyone strong and pushes us forward. He never lost hope that he would be better, that he could become a hero. Brilliant character
The symbolism in this song is crazy. The Lonely Bear is Kratos, while the Wolf trying to find his own kind is Atreus. The parent having to eat there own child to keep them from growing is Kratos trying to keep Atreus from going out and finding who Loki is and growing as a person. And the blood upon the snow is like Kratos’s red tattoos upon his ashen body.
The parent having tot eat his children is reffering to Chronos, Kratos grandfather. Chronos learned from Gaia that he was destined to be overcome by his own children, just as he had overthrown his father. As a result, although he sired the gods Demeter, Hestia, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon by Rhea, he devoured them all as soon as they were born to prevent the prophecy.
i just finished the game, did the secret ending with Brok's funeral... i cried like a little baby and now im just staring at the tv, not knowing what to do with my life. What an unbelievably beautiful game this is, i have no words... Santa Monica studio's need all the praise they can get!! This is in my opinion the BEST game ever made!!
when you realised that this song is dedicated to Kratos from being a Monster who only slaughters to a Father who learns from his mistakes and learning to be better version of himself, not shackled by his past future and fate makes it one of the greatest Narrative Games ever made
Well if you play video games, I would definitely recommend it. The Norse games give new players a good starting point, but the whole Gow franchise is pretty great!
GOW: RAGNAROK ain't just a game. It's an emotional experience. Expecially for parents. About having to let your children grow and form themselves all you can do is guide them past the path of your mistakes
The connection between a Bear and a Wolf personifies the relationship between Kratos and Artreus perfectly, it’s just so inspiring man, and you love to see these 2 in action as Father and Son
I was listening to this song on repeat a couple days ago, and it also made me realize something else about their relationship. Atreus only has a bear form in the story when he’s more in sync with Kratos and trusts him. When he’s off on his own he’s a wolf. I thought that was a really well told, and subtle way to show their relationship as well.
@@tacosauce9626 I can see you are trying to make a point here, but it didn't really work that way. 1st time he turned into a bear he was completely out of it and tried to kill his father. Then there was that time he turned into a bear to actively escape his father and go off to Odin after everyone told him not to. I don't think there was any symbolism to bear vs wolf at all, because it wasn't even to do with working AGAINST his father. it was split 50/50 between helping and hurting
Well, the way I see it, the bear represents Kratos and Atreus’s bear form is the Kratos part in him. His control of the form represents the relationship between them. When Atreus is with Kratos he tries to live up to him and follows his way so he turns into the bear, but he was struggling between following Kratos’ way and finding his own way in the beginning so he has little control of the bear form. As their relationship and trust grow, Atreus starts to reconcile Kratos’ teaching and his own identity, so he gains more control of the bear. When Atreus is alone trying to figure out his identity he turns into the wolf, and he gains control of the form very quickly once he realizes what he wants to do.
It's also a pretty good way of describing the differences between Old Kratos and Younger Kratos Bear, an animal capable of commiting a lot of pain and attacks with a large amount of fury to get the job done with quickness. Wolf, sometimes a white leader of the pack, sometimes alone, and then sometimes it will join a pack of new wolves to fit in and start a new journey. Both can be savages in nature in their own way, but they can always care for their own kin, hunting for them when they can't, so that when they are prepared to face the world as they have, they will face their problems without fear.
I grew up in an abusive household and lost my son before he was 2. These games have given me the chance to see both the relationship I prayed for as a son, and the one I was robbed of as a father. This song hurts in all the best ways
"It's not my arms that will fail me. But this world takes more strength than it gave me." I've struggled with my mental health for a LONG time... and hearing these lines brought me to tears. I've never heard it put so simply but so elegantly about what it's like to struggle in that way. I'm a strong guy - at least physically. 6'4, 250lbs, powerlifting, etc... but that's not what beats me down. God damn, Hozier and Bear knocked this out of the park.
The amount of focus put on mental health in these games while still being the hack n slash Kratos we all love is absolutely incredible. Some things are stronger than physical strength.
The next line is just as important, The trees deny themselves nothing that makes them grow No rain fall, no sunshine. Takes both to grow a tree brother.
This is a theme that gives off a vibe straight out of a James Bond movie. And given how spectacular Ragnarok is, this is beyond moving. Thank You for this song!
Agreed and game soundtracks need to get more attention, this is stunning! By the way i freaking cried listening to this and no games have done this to me except the first The last of us and red dead redemption 2, masterpieces, cheers from Sweden!
I will confess when I heard this song I was like..''Dude sounds familiar..wait it's that take me to church guy! Awesome'' So I am guilty of this. But the 2 songs I have heard of him now where both great so it's perhaps time to look more into his work in general.

God of war is older game but its story is a masterpiece even thebold ps2 games that came first (God of war I, II, III greek mythology) and finally the God of war (norse mythology), came after the first 3 games and now ragnarok. This song describes it all 😀
I was an emotional mess when the credits rolled on Ragnarok, and this song really just seals the deal. A deep soulful song to cap off the adventures in The Nine Realms. Perfect.
SAME! And the part that comes before it?! I wont spoil it here for those who haven't seen it yet but you know what I'm talkin about. Man. This capped it perfectly. And well deserved. May he rest well
I really need to get this off my chest guys... playing Ragnarok and GOW 2018 really changed me forever. My father died back in August.. I'm 29 now and seeing the relationship between Kratos and Atreus really reminded me of the time I was 14 years old - around Atreus age. I literally couldn't believe I had tears in my eyes seeing how their relationship was so close to how my relationship with my father was. I remember him when I play this game. Great man he was.
I love how this song is not only for Ragnarök but also calls back to the original series like "The parent forced to eat it's young before it grows" can very well be a reference to Cronos eating his children before they can overtake him and even Zeus killing Kratos before he can do the same to him.
@@everettenjeze6276 you're right, he wasn't physically forced. But immediately after he kills him, Odin says he "had to". He felt like it was the only option left, to kill him. Because if Thor grew and changed from the destroyer that Odin raised, Odin would have no chance. More of his work, all for nothing. So he killed him. Again. Not a genuine physical force. But an emotional and psychological force

The line “it’s not my arms that will fail me, but this world takes more strength than it gave me” really resonates with me. This song is beautiful. Aligns with Hozier so well, he has a amazing voice
The lyrics are just downright haunting. The harsh unforgiveness of wilderness mirroring lines that depict loneliness, grief, depression and being lost in hopelessness. Hozier's voice delivers it all in such a mesmerising way. Amazing stuff, got chills.

I am no cry baby. I never feel sad enough to cry. I have a heart of stone. I will fully admit the last 2 god of war games had me emotionally exhausted. I was a crying mess. I have played them both a few more times and I still cry my way through them. I don’t cry at movies, music or games. These games are just different. They have something different from anything else I have ever experienced
Lost my dad in 1997 when I was 14. Had my son in 2010. I, like Kratos try to protect him from many of the things that hurt me when I was a kid and haunted me for years. I never knew a video game story would impact me as much as these two God of War games have. Lot of things that have destroyed me and made me bitter, I’ve learned to let go of to make my son’s life better. When Kratos opened the mural of him finally at peace….I lost my shit. That’s exactly what it feels like to have found forgiveness and redemption in yourself. No resentments…let go of all the shit that made you loathing and miserable. Well written. Well told. What an amazing story.
3:31 Everytime I hear those three familiar notes... that "Útlægr Guð"... it reaches that point in my heart where few other songs could. 2018's God Of War was my first PS4 game and what a game! Can't wait to play Ragnarok and I know that, accompanied by those notes, it will still feel like home. Edit: this song gets even deeper, sadder and yet more familiar once you complete the game
I cried my eyes out when atreus left. I love his character and playing as him I finished vallhalla yesterday and listened to this. I cried happy tears and was glad that I won. Lovely song. Lovely story and I hope to see more❤
@@edwardarroyo834 Especially the real ending... Spoiler ahead After Brok's funeral the credits roll again. That moment was so well crafted, especially how Mimir came with the answer for the riddle. That hit too hard for me.
The song already blew me away with how thoughtfully written it was and then the choral main theme kicked in and im actually tearing up. I’ve never been more prepared for anything
This song gave me goosebumps, the video is amazing too. Hozier writes songs that always touch our soul, and his voice is just WOW, mind blowing! Can't wait for his next album and I really miss seeing him play live.
If others here know the lyrics of the GoW 2018 theme song from the soundtrack, you can hear them here at 3:34, and it always hits as hard giving me chills, knowing what the lyrics mean Útlægr guð - Exiled God (or "Outlawed God", útlægr can mean both of these) Smán föður - Father’s shame Von móður - Mother’s hope Þraut barnsins - The child's trial
"I've no more kept my warmth than blood upon the snow" MAN, Whenever I hear this line it never fails to pierce my freaking soul. Like who even thought of these lyrics! What have they gone through to feel all these deep true emotions!
That line is underratedly clever, even just in how it takes the same starting phrase as the previous line but then recontextualizes what it means with the rest of the sentence
I am a grown up man. Having 3 years old daughter. Am crying again and again. I cried at the credits, the real one. It's been a long time since something, some song, some game touched my heart. Damn it penetrated. I love you all. Bear, Hozier, Chris, Sunny, Danielle, Cory, Eric!
2:16 "I've no more hunger now to see where the road will go" fits with Kratos not caring about prophecies and wanting to forge his own destiny unlike Odin who's obsessed with knowing everything.
I love how at the end of the game when they were showing all the people who participated in making this game and with this song it feels super epic like all these poeple was some legendary warriors
I just noticed that during the final verse where he repeats "Blood Upon the Snow" the chorus that comes in is sining the chant that is associated with Kratos, like when he reclaimed the Blades of Chaos. Chills...chills.
It's the theme of the original games; in God Of War (2018), they slipped it into the soundtrack in a song called, appropriately enough, "Echoes of An Old Life".

I feel you my brother.
Summed up how I feel about kratos the god of war series. pandora told kratos that hope makes everyone strong and pushes us forward. He never lost hope that he would be better, that he could become a hero. Brilliant character
Mimir. Well said brother 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

I am wondering if they will make more god of war games though. Cause I would like to see where it goes from Ragnarok.
Hozier's vocal range is no joke, so happy he got to be part of this magical world!! so deserved. this song needs to go viral fr
The symbolism in this song is crazy. The Lonely Bear is Kratos, while the Wolf trying to find his own kind is Atreus. The parent having to eat there own child to keep them from growing is Kratos trying to keep Atreus from going out and finding who Loki is and growing as a person. And the blood upon the snow is like Kratos’s red tattoos upon his ashen body.
as only Hozier can
The parent having tot eat his children is reffering to Chronos, Kratos grandfather.
@@dr4gosh holy shit, I never thought of it that way. Basically sins of the father, sins of the son.
Pretty straight forward 😜
Kratos being tricked by ares into killing calliope also is reference to the parent forced to eat its young

I know nothing about this series.
But dear God this song is just- perfection.
You missed the chance of listening the song for the first time by finishing the game, goosebumps

@@robblaettler4589 Never.
I also just realized that! What a great way to tell that part of the story
It's also a pretty good way of describing the differences between Old Kratos and Younger Kratos
Bear, an animal capable of commiting a lot of pain and attacks with a large amount of fury to get the job done with quickness.

"It's not my arm's that will fail me...but this world takes more strength than it gave me"
Epic line
Most songs Hozier is involved in have verry poetic Lyrics. (He is verry talented in this aspect)
"It's not my arms that will fail me.
But this world takes more strength than it gave me."
I've struggled with my mental health for a LONG time... and hearing these lines brought me to tears. I've never heard it put so simply but so elegantly about what it's like to struggle in that way. I'm a strong guy - at least physically. 6'4, 250lbs, powerlifting, etc... but that's not what beats me down. God damn, Hozier and Bear knocked this out of the park.
"You become a champion when you finally beat yourself"

The amount of focus put on mental health in these games while still being the hack n slash Kratos we all love is absolutely incredible. Some things are stronger than physical strength.
