His perfectionism on teaching made him the best music theory teacher I've had and seen. I still go back to his music theory Playlist when I feel the need to

Much love. Personally I can relate to self taught skills; I am legally blind and have been picking up different instruments since that happened. I love and appreciate everything you previously put up on theory, and genuinely hope your new endeavour is fruitful for you.
Most of the people commenting here seem to have been following you for years, I just came across this channel recently (I wish I had much sooner!). Your videos have made a bunch of concepts I’ve struggled with for *ever* super clear and accessible. These videos are truly a gift to anyone trying to gain an intuitive understanding of music theory. Thank you! Your new project also sounds super interesting - I’ll be sure to check it out!
Thank you far all the effort behind your music theory videos. I've pulled this channel up every couple of months wondering what ever happened. Did that just now and I'm in shock. The new podcast looks awesome!
Congratulations on your resurrection. I'll check out your new project. The way we educate people and ourselves is particularly interesting to me. I just rewatched the circle of fifths videos today and started the learning to read set - now boom, here you are! You taught me so much. I just drew my mental images for memorizing the grand staff! What you created here has amazing value. I hope this work remains available for future budding composers. You should not feel obligated to do more, you don't owe us anything. This is great! I found your channel because I wanted to learn how to play the piano but your secondary new show is definitely along my alley… and I’ll make sure to listen and follow! Thanks for putting this content together.
I'm picking up music again after many years away from the piano. I must say that your music theory lessons are so fresh and practical. It's like a light bulb just comes on every time I watch one of your videos. I only remember theory being dry, inapplicable when I had to learn it using the ABRSM syllabus. Thanks and I hope you'll make more content especially on jazz piano.
Thx Micheal! I learned a lot, filled my theory gap in your channel. I hope it'll be more writing music series one day. For all the youtubers I've watched in this two years , u're really really good at teaching and ur patients and serious really affect me. THX!
So glad to see this update. I am an older guy who starting playing music again a few years ago after not doing so for a long time. My music education is very limited and learned so much from you about music theory. I checked frequently for new videos from you until I gave up, so I am glad to see you are back, I will definitely check out your new channel. Good Luck with it.
Hey Michael, I completely understand how you feel. Thank you so much for the content, i cant describe how awesome it has been. Every single video is perfect. Feel proud of what you have done. You have helped me understand the music i have been hearing all my life. Thank you.
I have learnt so much from your theory tutorials and they even helped me drift off to sleep several times. I dont mean that as a put down, merely just that you carved out a beautiful anxiety free place and space in your lessons. I often came back to check the channel for more lessons or just to chill and here we are. Good luck with the new channel and god bless. You have a gift, don’t stop sharing it.
It's nice to hear from you, man - and there's nothing wrong with letting a project be finite, or moving on from it. You've covered some really solid info here, and it's been the foundation of my understanding of music theory. I really appreciate having this stuff out here as a resource, but... there's only so much to cover, or that you'll want to cover. Don't be afraid to wrap it up in a bow and finalize your basic music theory video collection -- or to start up a sequel for intermediate music theory, or something else more specific. No idea if I'll be joining you on the new video series or not, but.. thanks for letting us know. Stay safe out there.
Hey! So nice to know about you. Your videos were very important to me, they "unlocked" lots of things in my mind. I still remember discovering your channel and thinking " wow this guy explains so good, lets check the channel". Your new project looks very interesting, the best luck!!!
Pursue your dreams, dear Michael New. You've helped me significantly with Music Theory the time you had on this channel. Definitely checking out the new stuff, as you're very intelligent and super empathetic for new learners who don't get the lingo. Best wishes to you, and see you there.
This new channel is a great idea. I've also had the same reservations about the education system and have self-taught myself many things and continue to do so. I'm a bit of a perfectionist too so I totally get where you're coming from. You put out such great content and I've always recommended you with high praise so you should be proud of this channel and I'm excited to see your new one.
Crazy, I feel so identified with you. I am a graduated software developer and a self-taught musician, so the other way around :) I also struggle with what you described in this video. Thanks a lot for your videos Michael! Thanks to you I got a completely new view on music theory. I always recommend your channel to friends who are struggling with it. You don't necessarily need to be uploading new videos, leaving the old videos online so that people (and myself) can keep learning from them is already huge. All the best for you, I just subscribed to your new UA-cam channel ;)
Good to see you are back! I've discovered this channel this year and I didn't thought it would be brought back to life! Learned tons of music theory, you're the best! Will follow you on the self development channel, but I've got to say, I've developed so much already, that all I wanna do now is learn about music, haha! Cheers to 2021!
First off: Super interesting new stuff and thanks so much for being so helpful with all your content here! Guess the question that interests me the most about that is the question of how to convince your employer you're actually as good or better than the other applicants. Would love to hear something about that! :)
Hey Michael! Firstly, happy new year. I hope 2021 is a great year for you. I wondered what happened to you so I'm so glad to hear that you are OK.....it's weird how we think about people that we've never met, how in moments when we're doing something trivial like making a cup of coffee we have these thoughts about someone, wondering where they went, what happened to them etc. Your music videos are fantastic and I have watched them all several times, so thank you for that. I'll definitely be following your new channel, the subjects you said you'll be covering are the kinds of subjects that interest me a lot as well. Take care and good luck with your new channel, I'm sure it'll be great!
Hey Michael, just wanted to say that you are by far the best teacher I've encountered on youtube. I started pursuing music last year due to lockdown and if it wasn't for your incredibly easy to follow videos then I defiantly wouldn't be where I am right now so thank you! I'll definitely check out your other channel!
I’m a huge procrastinator and am very curious to know more about why I’m like this. Already subbed to you new channel. I’m excited for it. My biggest passion, I knew nothing about when I was a kid. Ended up teaching myself about it and when I got a job doing it, I excelled like you wouldn’t believe! I’m currently teaching myself guitar in my down time from classes.
HOLY F***ING SH*T you're back! You are the first channel I used for music theory and I was hoping to see you again some day. All the best with your new projects and a huge thank you for the awesome music theory videos you did.
You made music theory clearer to me, in a simple straightforward way -- and thank you for that. Best wishes on future endeavours, as well. I shall have a look at the new channel....
I know its 2021 but I'm a software dev that makes music on the side and literally discovered your old music theory videos this year. I'm so glad that you're going to continue teaching
I started watching your channel back in November...I have always struggled with understanding music even though it's something I have always been passionate about. I just want to say thank you! You are helping me through music theory towards my degree. I will definitely follow the new project, it will be just as great as you imagine! Whew! Glad I got that out😊
Hi Michael! It's great to see you back-but I'm very sorry indeed to hear about what happened to you that led to your “disappearance.” I was a big fan of your great music theory videos. I was just starting out learning music when I found your channel, and your content was just the thing! :) I'll always be grateful for your help. :) Meanwhile, I'll chase up your new venture!
Life isn’t always about finding yourself. Sometimes it’s more about creating yourself and if you find yourself going in a different direction to that which others expect you to be going that’s just fine. Nice to see you back.
Couldn't agree more David! I'm going through that at the moment, at the age of 54, creating my new self through learning piano and music composition. Happy new year to you!
Thank you so much for the content on this channel. Your videos helped me understand music theory, to the point where theory books started to make sense to me. I'm so happy to see you back. Even if you don't make any more content for this channel, I'm looking forward to seeing you discuss education on the new channel. Good luck.
In the Bb position (10:00) from my monitor on the wall is a self produced "Circle of 5ths" wheel reproduced in felt marker on 11x17 inspired by two youtube teachers being Michael New and Brian Kelly. It has facilitated my practice in all the different keys. Inserted the triad notes for easy reference. Thank you Michael New.
Welcome back! I'm deeply interested in your new channel/podcast. I've been an unfortunate lost soul in the throes of the college experience, and wow has procrastination been a central issue in that battle. I am excited to check out the insights you have stumbled upon in your experiences, as well as just being a better self-taught learner overall, because I need help with that too. Motivation is always a quick fleeting high which puts me on a trajectory to crash and burn in just about every endeavor I've started, so advice is welcome. Again, welcome back and I'm happy to know you're well
I discovered your videos a couple of months ago and they have been so helpful. I can't thank you enough! Even if you decide not to post anything music related ever again, please do not delete this channel!
Subscribed to the podcast immediately. Can’t wait for the procrastination episode. Edit: I can tell this was a difficult video to make, it’s uncomfortable in the same way you feel when you run into a friend you haven’t seen in a long time and haven’t kept up with. I’m just glad you’re happy and well.
Thank you for your tutorials. Even throught english isnt my native language and I never been taught music in school you always somehow managed to make music theory feel easily understandable. On youtube there are many talented musician who teach music, but not enough talented teachers like you.
Just saw this. My man, you are (were?) the best music theory teacher on UA-cam. Others do it flashier, but you got to the essence and made it accessible and fun. So thank you for that! It's not easy being awesome. I kinda get that. So thank you for trying.
Just wanted to say, that your videos about music theory were a tremendance help and Im sure going to help a lot of people years forward. The topic of self learning is facilitating, I related to a lot of things you talked about on 'theoverranalyzers' channel and would be interested in seeing more. Good luck and thank you!
Hey, Adam. Really funny you’ve made a reappearance today. I stumbled across your music theory videos just a couple of days ago and I’ve watched them back to back for hours, jotting down notes. I just wanted you to know how much you’ve really helped me in the gaps I had in my music theory knowledge, how many questions you’ve answered, some that I did not even know that I didn’t have. It was only a couple of days ago I was getting my son to show me (because I’m clueless) how to watch your back catalogue, I’m still working nn through it. I can’t thank you enough. As I’m new to your channel, I hadn’t even realised you’d not posted for a while; listening to your new video today it seems you’ve been in a difficult place. I just wanted to let you know your videos here have made a massive difference, even the ones that I nearly did not watch because I thought ‘Heh, no need for me to watch that. I already know that bit.’ Thank you so much for your time and energy spent. I wish you all the best for the future. Jamie.
I’m glad you’re not dead MIchael! You are the best and you’ve given us so much continent that we can just ruminate on that for a long time and absorb it. Good luck with your next project I’ll check it out.
A quote that helps me when I am struggling with perfectionism: "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly.” (G.K. Chesterton) For me your lessons are very, very helpful. Thank you!!
i’m a software eng in SF and i have a CS degree and I was using your channel to help me get back into music and was really encouraged because of how clearly you explain things! it’s funny - i really wanted to get back into learning music (and learning new things in general) because where i live/work i’m just oversaturated by very stereotypical STEM topics. so while i know how math and music theory are related, i almost begrudgingly try not to think about it 😂 I’ll exchange formal CS training for music lessons with you any day! i’m super interested in your new project - i love analyzing what makes self-taught folks successful but also importantly, how to effectively teach folks and convey complex information to maximize understanding. excited for it :)
man I kinda wanna hug you so hard... please stay cool and taking care of yourself. I remember discovering your channel and how it changed my life thinking "wow I wanna be like this guy" as if it were yesterday
Although I enjoyed your music theory videos and learned a lot from them, you do what you need to do. Thanks and regardless of what you end up doing here, I'll certainly check out your new channel.
Nice to see you back and well. Only today I commented on a video from 2011 of you explaining about chords, and stated that you might be an accomplished musician by now. Just wanted you to know that you have been a great inspiration for me, and your music theory videos help me a lot in my late life endeavour (I recently turned 60) to learn playing the piano. Even if you don't create any more new music theory videos, please know that you are much appreciated. Thank you, Michael. Be well, be happy and flourish.
Hey man, good to see you after so long. I agree with your point of procrastination being an emotional issue, in fact I think every learning/improvement/getting ahead roadblock that people face are all emotional problems. Having been in therapy for the last two years, I have come to realise how overlooked and poorly understood emotional problems are. Even in the field of learning. Im very excited to see how you approach this topic on your new channel. Im happy to follow you guys. Good Luck!
I just saw this update, very understandable. Thank you for finally teaching me the circle of fifths, almost 20 years after learning it in highschool jazzband it actually made sense listening to your video.
Popped in here following a recommendation from a Reddit thread someone posted 3 years ago. I started my own self-teaching journey (guitar) a year ago - really curious to learning more about your take on self-teaching and the emotional take on procrastination.
Glad to see you're back! I'll definitely check out your other project. As artists, i'm sure it would be really insightful to hear other's perspectives in those kinds of matters. Wishing you good luck!

Glad to you see you back. You are a great teacher.
I have learned so much from your Music Theory videos. They are the best and most complete I have found. Thank-you!
Hey Michael, I completely understand how you feel. Thank you so much for the content, i cant describe how awesome it has been. Every single video is perfect. Feel proud of what you have done. You have helped me understand the music i have been hearing all my life. Thank you.
Wow! you coming back is the best news. Thank you so much for this channel and now for this new project. I'll make sure to check your new channel.
Thank you Michael for your great music channel and I'm sure the new channel will be even greater!
Thank you for teaching me Michael, God bless you.
Wow crazy too see you back man! I'm for sure going to check your podcasts and new show
Hey Michael, just wanted to say that you are by far the best teacher I've encountered on youtube. I started pursuing music last year due to lockdown and if it wasn't for your incredibly easy to follow videos then I defiantly wouldn't be where I am right now so thank you! I'll definitely check out your other channel!
Best holiday gift. Can’t wait to watch the show. Happy New Year!
Thank you so much Michael, your videos were very helpful for me early on when I first got into music theory and jazz. Take care man
I’m a huge procrastinator and am very curious to know more about why I’m like this.
Glad you are back! Even if you don't create new content please never shut this channel down. Your lessons are tremendous
Glad you're not dead! I have sent multiple people to your videos for accessible explanations about music theory. Love your content!
Nothing but facts, my dude.
Again, welcome back and I'm happy to know you're well
Your channel has been a blessing. Very valuable information.
Even if you don't do any more music theory videos, you have created a collection of GREAT stuff. It helped me out a lot. Thanks!
Glad to see you're Ok. Thank you for what this channel has given and all of the best for the new channel.
Just wanted to say, that your videos about music theory were a tremendance help and Im sure going to help a lot of
people years forward.
The topic of self learning is facilitating, I related to a lot of things you talked about on 'theoverranalyzers' channel and would
be interested in seeing more.
Good luck and thank you!
Your channel is gold for me!! Your videos help me so much. Thank you for each video...
I follow your new project.
Jamie.
Hey, I've missed your videos! I'm looking forward to your and Daniel's new show!
You are are a good man that is passionate about the things you pursue.
People like that.
Best of luck to you.
Chesterton)
For me your lessons are very, very helpful. Thank you!!
It's great to see you again! I watched all your videos and learned how to create musics for my games thanks to you! YOU ARE THE BEST!
So glad you're back just revisited this channel and Im so happy now
I learnt music theory this year by watching your videos throughout lockdown, thanks for the amazing content! Good to see your alive hahaha
i’m a software eng in SF and i have a CS degree and I was using your channel to help me get back into music and was really encouraged because of how clearly you explain things! it’s funny - i really wanted to get back into learning music (and learning new things in general) because where i live/work i’m just oversaturated by very stereotypical STEM topics. so while i know how math and music theory are related, i almost begrudgingly try not to think about it 😂 I’ll exchange formal CS training for music lessons with you any day!
i’m super interested in your new project - i love analyzing what makes self-taught folks successful but also importantly, how to effectively teach folks and convey complex information to maximize understanding. excited for it :)
Oh brilliant!! I so, so agree with your perspective, you are great and yes I am very interested!!
man I kinda wanna hug you so hard... please stay cool and taking care of yourself.
I remember discovering your channel and how it changed my life thinking "wow I wanna be like this guy" as if it were yesterday
Incredible. Your videos have inspired me to learn piano, and I’m happy see you again! Good luck with the new project-I’ll be tuning in 😊
Although I enjoyed your music theory videos and learned a lot from them, you do what you need to do.
You're literally one of the channels I learned music theory from. This year I'm publishing my EP Album.
Glad to see you're back! I'll definitely check out your other project. As artists, i'm sure it would be really insightful to hear other's perspectives in those kinds of matters. Wishing you good luck!
