My father was Buck’s Operations Officer, Richard Carey.
    He passed away in 1970.
My mother was able to speak with Buck a few times shortly before they passed. He spoke with Mom about his precious wife. She couldn’t be replaced in his heart. It was the same for my mother.
Buck was one of a kind, a colorful character. I’m glad he was chosen to be a part of this film.
God bless the Bloody Hundredth Vets, families, and friends.
Thank you Lucky Luckadoo. Mike Faley, and Carol &Ron Batley for giving us a glimpse into the heroic lives of our Fathers.

Never had a trailer strike me quite so hard. “You may be the last pretty face I see…” It’s one of those humanizing moments in cinema where you remember these were largely kids (or at least to me, I see them as I would have been at their age). Lotta them were young virgins who would stay that way for eternity. The cost becomes much more clear to groundlings like myself.

Oh boy, I can hardly wait! This looks to be a great series.
My dad was in Europe in WWII. His Division, the 99fh, was in the northern shoulder of the Battle of the Bulge. After the Bulge had been stabilized, the 99th began attacking east into Germany. The weather at that time had cleared but was extremely cold. Dad told me that the soldiers on the ground could hear the rumble of bomber engines before the bomber stream was visible.
In a sight not seen before or since, the hundreds of contrails left in the sky was quite a sight. The extreme cold would condense and leave four distinct lines in the sky for each bomber. Depending on the wind, the contrails might linger in the sky for several minutes after the bomber stream had disappeared.
Interestingly, there was some rivalry between the infantry and the airmen. In the opinion of the foot soldiers, the airmen got faster promotions, more medals and press coverage and most of all, hot food and a warm bed each night.
While some that was true, it gave the American soldier one more thing to gripe about. Enduring the cold and fear on each mission that most air crews experienced was not something that the infantry soldiers would have really wanted.
    Looking forward to the series!

The Eighth Air Force crews had hot food and a warm bunk to sleep in at night and the occasional pass to London but they suffered much higher losses than the infantry or even the Marines. My mother had two first cousins in the Mighty Eighth, a navigator and a pilot. Neither survived.

My mother had a first cousin that was a navigator on a B24 in the 15th Air Force in Italy, he didn't make it either, shot down on his 20th mission, he was just 20 years old to.
The average age of the air crewmen whether they be in fighter's or bombers was actually younger than the average infantryman but there's a reason for that, from a physiological standpoint once you hit about 24 or 25 you were pretty much washed up for being on an aircraft that operated at high altitude, every day your taking off from relative sea level where the air is thick and warm, 20 minutes later your at 23,000 ft where there's ⅓rd the atmosphere and it's 50° below zero, and worse yet if you're a fighter pilot you're pulling anywhere from 7 to 9 G's while in a dogfight, 30 year olds start passing out at 5 or 6 G's, and their bodies can't take being acclimated to sea level and 20 minutes later being 5 miles above the earth, oxygen masks are one thing but a 30 year old body suddenly being under that much less air pressure can cause nose bleeds, vomiting (neither of which is ideal when you're wearing an oxygen mask), being on an aircrew in those unpressurized WW2 aircraft was a young man's sport.

it occurred to me that one possible reason for them looking older than their age is that they survived the stress of their training. I've seen numbers between 13,000 and 15,000 Air Corps aircrew were lost during training. I recall one of the pilots or navigators in the book mentioning that the first time he saw a B-17 (during training) it crashed on landing, killing everyone on board. The losses were so great, General Arnold kept it the numbers from the press so as not to impact on national morale.

Loving your channel and so interesting. This forthcoming TV series is one I am so looking forward to watching. I live in the UK and only a stones throw away from the USAAF 384th airbase which conducted the very first bombing run onto enemy occupied land. I have even done a short documentary on this airfield. Fascinating site to visit and explore its many buildings of which still exist today. Grafton Underwood is the name of the village close by and still looks as it did back in 1945. The 384th was part of the Mighty 8th and to watch this new series will bring to light the story of these brave airmen. Keep up the good work. 👍

I'm still making my way through your impressive catalog of videos but would love to see something about the "Generation Kill" mini-series and/or book. I was a history major so I'm interested in how the story of combat veterans are gathered and then adapted into movies and tv, so I'd also love to some kind of discussion about authors such as S.L.A. Marshall (Porkchip Hil), Stephen Ambrose (Band of Brothers), and/or Mark Bowden (Blackhawk Down) and how their soldier interviews eventually became the basis for film and tv.

I was born and raised Germany before moving to the U.S. as a teenager. My parents were children at the end of WWII. My dad grew up in Nuremberg and experienced air raids before being shipped out into the country. My mom remembers the red horizons in the distance when Bruchsal and Pforzheim were bombed. Near the village in southwestern Germany where I lived before leaving Germany, an American crew member was captured and beat up by civilians after being shot down. After he was liberated from the POW camp where he was imprisoned, he returned to that village with fellow American soldiers, looked for those who had beat him up, and did the same to them. I loved Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Even enjoyed watching the aforementioned 1883 (notwithstanding the inaccuracies). I'm very much looking forward to watching this TV series.

Have you ever seen "Rescue Dawn?" Its based on the true story of Dieter Dengler who grew up in Germany during WWII and was buzzed by an allied fighter plane and then resolved to move to the U.S. and join the military and become a pilot. He then got shot down over Laos and captured during the Vietnam War. I found the story of his time in the prison camp and escape very moving and well done.

looking forward to this series, big fan of Band of Brothers. The trailer however did not captivate me due tp the combination of the quick cuts and consistant rumbling bass-drop thud, thud, thud trailer sounds; each trailer verson seems to be identical just different footage. For a historic picture I personally would like a little more promotion on transfering to the audience and reflecting the history these young lads went through than promoting this as night club scene (music wise only). I'm guessing there's not many flying B-17s out there obviously. The VFX of the show of Austin Butler for a brief second at 2:59 has me concerned about overall quality of the show. Hi Reelers! I'm seeking your knowledge, let me explain, after the masters of the air series were announced, I remembered an article I read when I was a 10 year old kid, back in the early 90s, on the Reader's Digest magazine. The article was a sort of a summary or extract from the memories of a P-51 pilot who was shot down over the Netherlands and how the Dutch resistance helped him to avoid capture and return to England. But the thing is that I can't recall anything else about the story like pilot's name or which squadron he was. And of course, my mom doesn't have the magazine anymore 😅. So I know it's an incredible longshot, but maybe someone here might have heard or read that story and could help me with the name of the memoirs or the pilot's name. Anyway, thanks for your time.

Most likely it's a FW-190 firing 1 of 2 Werfer Grante 21 rocket. Couple of suspicious inaccuracies (my assumption) in that scene. First, they were unguided rockets that required a lot of skill to use. The doctrine for using rockets was to fire at a distance at slower speeds before engaging the formation. Second, those rocket pods were tilted to fire at an arch into the formation. The straight-line shot in the scene would most likely not have happened.

Bomber Command needs their own series as they also suffered heavy losses and operated for twice as long as their American allies. However, after the war, the British people were turned off by the area bombing of Hamburg, Berlin and Dresden that killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. @@ekl2947 - that's the same agument that the British landings on D-Day should have been included on Saving Private Ryan. That protest (I remember at the time the UK media blew up a bit over it) was frankly embarrassing, because the British and Canadian landings had nothing to do with the story of Saving Private Ryan and takes place on Omaha Beach and behind the lines on Utah Beach sectors - both American.
British actors are more than capable of playing American characters, as more than half of Easy Company in Band of Brothers were successfully played by British actors, with a couple of Irishmen and a South African as well, but for some reason American scriptwriters can't seem to write for British characters, so the characters come off in a very stereotypical way. The three I can think of in Band of Brothers - 'Fake German' (Harry Peacock) in Ep.1 'Currahee', Lt Col David Dobie (John Light) and Brigadier General [should be just 'Brigadier'] 'Red Beret' (Graham Seed) in Ep.5 'Crossroads' - were awful, okay, and not great respectively, despite all being good British actors.
It's like the example of Rush in the Freddie Hunt interview link I posted, the attitude of the American director, scriptwriter, or whoever is responsible, frankly does deserve a slap in the face. I totally agree with Hunt's comments, particularly as I remember watching his father race in the 1970s and do commentary on F1 races in his second career after retiring. Listening to Freddie was like having James back in the room. Hemsworth's performance or Howard's direction and attitude are just baffling, especially when you consider how Daniel Brühl was able and allowed to honour Niki Lauda with a "masterpiece" of a portrayal.

@@ekl2947 - the negative response to Saving Private Ryan in the UK came from our own D-Day veterans themselves, and the media picked up on it, but as I said it was embarrassing if you knew the history because it was simply not their story and they had no reason to feel aggrieved. It was not like the U-571 situation where questions were asked in Parliament and the British Government actually made a formal protest.
I agree with your comments about the glossy trailers, and despite Spielberg admitting he went too far with the maudlin music on Saving Private Ryan, he doesn't seem to have applied the lesson on his TV series. I'm really starting to deeply resent being telegraphed how to think and feel when I'm watching these productions. Just tell the story, don't tell me how I should feel about it.
Oh yes, they get the German characters right (but I reserve the right to be corrected by an actual German viewer), just as Ron Howard was apparently happy for Daniel Brühl to get Niki Lauda right in Rush. Heaven forbid that anyone on the continent of Europe should be offended.
On British casualties on 911, my checking indicates it was 67, because I thought that 78 was more like the number of nationalities represented, but that was at least 102 apparently.
Anyway, bottom line is that Hollywood just doesn't seem to be able to write for British characters, so a production like this should have at least one British writer on staff, or allow the actors script approval for their lines. I really like the UA-cam clip of Matt Damon telling the story of working with Jack Nicholson on The Departed, where Nicholson claimed the secret to his successful career was because he was a good writer - "you could end the scene there, but if you leave the camera rolling..." - ua-cam.com/video/DuXOSXyyCGo/v-deo.html

Any recently released war movie needs to have Dale Dye in the cast. He would be perfect as the Commander of the Eight Air Force. Is it true when a B-17 crew returned with no damage to their plane, the ground crew would shake bottles of Coca-Cola and spray the crew? Not having to repair the aircraft must have been something to celebrate. Just kidding, folks.

Not sure how this series is going to pan out, really? It’s going to have to heavily rely on CGI, as it’s just not doable otherwise and this will be its weakest link.
I can see why they chose the “Bloody Hundredth” as their Bomb Group though.....girls in London wouldn’t get involved with them, that’s how bad their loss rate reputation was and when they flew the Raid to Munster, Flying as the Low Formation, everyone got shot down save for one Bomber....only one got home to Thorpe Abbots....120+ men lost on one Raid....The C/O refused to believe the Crew report from the Crew that returned...he reckoned that shock had got to them and that his other Bombers had put down at different bases because of battle damage. 😢😢....after a couple of hours the ugly truth hit home.....
Fingers crossed that this series does indeed become the fitting memorial that these men deserve.

What "Band Of Brothers" and "The Pacific" did so well was keep their stories real, and authentic, and no-nonsense. I'm hoping it's just the trailer, but "Masters Of The Air" looks a lot more like rah-rah, flag-flailing, stand-up-and-salute-SIR! melodrama than the first two miniseries. I know there are people who really go for that sort of storytelling. But as a veteran myself, it just rings sort of hollow. I'm hoping the scenes that they have shown so far will be a lot less cheesy in the overall context of the series. I've been looking forward to this for so long. So far, it looks like "Top Gun"; the aerial scenes are thrilling, and the ground scenes look eye-rollingly bad.
