If you were a boy growing up in the late 70s early 80s this was one of my favourite shows on TV. Galactica 1980 too. Buck Rogers as well. I'm sure they used some of the same spaceships 🤔
UA-cam : Sean has a video on Battlestar Galactica (one of my fav tv franchies of all time) Me: Gets coffee, chips (even though it is midnite) and forbids everyone else in the house to speak until the video is done.
Cheers Zaranyzerak, loved your earlier review of classic Battlestar Galactica. And its videos like this and your Macross/Robotech, 80's animated shows and the Robocop DVD/Blu-ray reviews that made me a fan of yours. Thank you for revisiting this classic series!
My experience with the original BSG is watching it as a 4 year old in 1980 which is when they were showing it on Kuwaiti tv. I was crazy for it and you couldn't bribe me with candy & ice cream to get me away from the screen. But what I remember more is Galactica 1980 as they showed that a lot more times in reruns after reruns. My family moved back to India in 1987 and it would be 5 years later that I got a chance to watch some of the episode, including the film, on recorded VHS tapes that some cousins of mine recorded from the UK. Fast forward to 2003 when I got a VCD (very cheap dvd knock off) of the movie that I played a lot on my player. In 2007 I saw the show was on some website (which I can't remember the name of now) and watched them a couple of times. A few years later I got bootleg copies and finally in January of this year I bought the proper dvds sets of BSG & Galactica 1980 from Amazon UK (can't get them here in India). My collection is small but the original BSG sets have a place of honour in my collection.
The Australian version of the Battlestar Galactica 1977 series was sold in a metal collectors Cylon Head box, it was released through a now defunct video store called EzyDVD. I enjoyed the Galactica 1980 version as well, I want a flying motor bike, actually make it a trike. Great video, Cheers.
I’m born in 1969, so just a bit older than you are. I also saw SW’ in in cinema, all the episodes of BSG, the comics, action figures, models - back before we had a vhs, my brother was in school sports, and I was to go with our parents, yet I whined do much that I would miss BSG I was left at home to view. The reimagined series, I was skeptical about at first. Yet seeing the initial episodes….and, accepting the changes, I was really glad. I got a friend into the series. We’d meet watch episodes, drank some beer.
Had this, along with other vids stewing in my "Watch Later" cue, and now I'm catching up. Great "Closer Look". I remember, as a kid, catching this show on the "Sci-Fi Channel" (pre-"Syfy") when they weren't rerunning "Buck Rogers", it's usually came, I think after "The Incredible Hulk". I don't think I've ever watched all of the show, but overtime I began to hear about its cultural impact. I did see some of the new series, but its been so long, I don't remember liking it or not. Those were some sweet sets. Especially the "Red Box" version, the "Black Box" version might be a little cheaper, but the "Red Box" is where its at. :)
You and I are the same age because I was five when I went to see Star Wars and six when Battlestar Galactica aired. And I remembered all of it because my dad was a syfy nut and me and him never missed an episode. We also watched Buck Rogers, knightrider and so many others. Battlestar Galactica was by far my favorite syfy show when I was a kid and it was a hell of a lot more kid friendly than the reboot.
@@zaranyzerak My man I just wanted to let you know that Universal Studios had released The Incredible Hulk Complete Series on Blu-ray that came out last week and it's very interesting to see whether or not Universal Studios had used the wetgate scan that they did with the 1975 Jaws movie restoration whereas they got rid of the debris and the scratches I just wanted to let you know that if you are planning on getting The Incredible Hulk Complete Series on Blu-ray in the United States I'm applauding you and hopefully you will be able to do the Blu-ray review just passing the word along to you peace out my brother.
@@zaranyzerak My friend I just wanted to give you an update on the Incredible Hulk Complete Series on Blu-ray from Universal Studios which is very disappointing I was watching a review on UA-cam and the person who wrote the review said that Universal Studios didn't restore non of the episodes whereas there was spec and debris and since Universal Studios owns the masters I do not understand why didn't they use the wetgate scan to remove the dirt as well as cleaning it up I might get the version that you did the review on if Universal Studios Blu-ray doesn't sell well they have absolutely nobody to blame but themselves.
I vaguely remember watching BSG the night it first aired in 1978. I was almost 5 years old. I mostly only remember the Carillon Casino segments with the insectoid Ovion and the Alien singers with two mouths. I was a fanatic for both BSG and Star Wars as a kid.
I guess im asking randomly but does anybody know a way to get back into an instagram account..? I stupidly lost the password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
@Ernest Solomon Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
In terms of HD quality, the 4x3 version is vastly superior. This was done for the original German release and the colours, texture and depth is spectacular! The 16x9 HD was done by Universal, and while it is good, it lacks the richness of the German version. So again, another reason to watch the original aspect ratio. :)
I feel the same way about nostalgia. I grew up with the original Battlestar Galactica and I like it the best. I have tried watching the reboot but just couldn't get into it.
I remember watching the reruns of both Battlestar Galactica and Galactica 1980 on Space in the late '90s and early 2000s. I loved it. Incidentally I also have the movie on DVD in a Science Fiction four pack with Flash Gordon, Dune and The Last Starfighter.
@@zacharyjochumsen9677 I don't. Not anymore anyway. I used to own the first season on DVD, but I got rid of it a few years. I wasn't into the 2000s series. I thought it was well made, but it wasn't for me.
My mother was the same back in the day, she would have been a little older than you when the original series aired, and kept putting off watching the newer show. (coincidentally I was 5 myself when the reimagined series began). It took me asking Edward James Olmos himself to yell at her to watch it when I met him at a convention to get her to do it, and she did not regret it. I love how differently both tackle the premise, but I haven't watched the original since I was a kid and I remember 1980 more, unfortunately.
Thanks for sharing. This is on my list to get. I too remember watching this when I was younger when it was on TV. I've been on a nostalgia kick lately with old TV shows, etc. Mostly because of the story telling. The stuff coming out now is laced with and pushing some sort of agenda and there is no real story telling. I digress, though. Hopefully, I can pick this up soon.
I love the original so much.It managed to create a whole new mythos that was believable .The remake was great but I love the original so much. They should never have cancelled it and there wasn’t much merchandise .Id loved to get the toys.Itll be interesting to see what the coming movie will be like .
i like supportive fans like yourself man. Classic BSG had such an original premise by Glen Larson i don't care how big Star Wars is/was, Galactica in its own way should've been an equally big as a TV series. Had the ABC network not panicked and cancelled it outright!
*It'll be interesting to see what the coming movie will be like* ^It'll most probably be a remake of Larson's original '78 version since Glen Larson retained all the theatrical rights to any interpretation of Battlestar Galactica. While Universal Studios owns the television rights. a film version won't be based on Ron Moore's remake of BSG that much i do know. Unless Universal paid the Larson estate a whopper of money in the multi millions to let go of the film copyrights?, which i highly doubt they'll be doing anytime soon.
I've had the big box set with the Cylon's raised head on it forever, it is very well done and a tribute to the show. I recently bought the newer version of it in the standard box because I was getting a bit of skipping on some of the discs in the original set, which I've kept anyway or course. I also have the video game for Xbox. it's not bad, the graphics are good (for the time it was released, early 2000's) and it is kind of cool to be able to launch in a Viper... I also still have the original broadcast on American television on a VHS tape. I recorded it while I watched it on the first VCR my parents ever owned ($700!!). I just let it run so all the commercials are in there along with an interruption of the broadcast for a special news report. I keep meaning to have it transferred to another medium but never seem to get around to it. I don't have Blu-ray and don't intend to get it so I'll stick with the two sets I have. I was in college when it first aired, getting a degree in aeronautical science, and I had the only TV on the floor so every Sunday night my room was full of future aeronautical professionals watching BSG, we never missed it. We spent most of our time discussing the flight characteristics of the Viper or, arguing about which female character we would most like to get to know. I always went with Cassiopeia because she was not only beautiful but she was also very cool. My runner up was always Brie even though she was only in a few episodes....she made quite an impression. Great show back then and it's still great now. And I did watch the re-imagined series on Sci-Fi; it was just ok, but not even close to being as good or as iconic as the original. They used the same ships and the same names but it wasn't the real BSG.
I had both these sets but to make room on my shelf I put the blu ray set in the cylon head just to keep that and it’s booklet, now the cylon won’t go all the way together but it will enough to be steady on the shelf and I was able to sell the DVD’s to a work friend for a good price
BSG came out when I was 8. I was still on a high from Star Wars and I loved it .I was so upset when it was cancelled after only a year. Also Ralph Mcquarrie drew the concept art
Guessing that's Season 1 of the 2004 series? There was only one season of the original, plus the half season 1980 series. The original was never released on HD-DVD.
@@zaranyzerak yes. 2004. first disc is the 2003 miniseries, and the full 2004 season 1. it must have been a near launch release, because there is a pamphlet with it on "how to watch hd-dvd!" lol so theres like 6 pages that tell you how to navigate u-controll, and pop-up menus, and those other new features. hah
Ralph McQuarrie, Dennis Muren, Lorne Peterson, Peter Kuran, Bruce Nicholson, Mike Pangrazio, Joe Johnson, Richard Edlund, John Dykstra (ILM & Apogee Studios visual effects artist), All worked on Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica! While the series also had great talent like; Frank Frazetta (promotional art for the series only), Jean-Pierre Dorleac (costume designer), Andrew Probert and the legendary; Stu Phillips (series composer). On it as well.
I did enjoy the 70s Battlestar Galactica, but not so much Galactica 1980. I was worried I wouldn't be able to enjoy the original as I watched the Reimagining first, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Only episode I really like of 1980 was Return of Starbuck and I enjoyed the time travel concept of the 3 part premiere. It had potential but they screwed up royally by focusing on those dumb kids in most episodes.
Bit of random trivia for you, that you probably already know anyway! The artwork on the digipack that was used on the teaser poster is probably best known to a lot of us for appearing on the front cover of the original release of the novelisation from Futura over here in the UK and from Totem in your neck of the woods in Canada. As far as I know, the US editions only ever used the artwork that was on the poster for the movie release.
Can anyone tell me if this set has the 5:1 audio (if that’s the correct name) where you can separate the sound effects from the music and vocals ,, or is that surround-sound I’m thinking of? I just want to be able to hear vocals “isolated” from the rest of the audio
I was 12 when "BSG" '78 came out &, for me, it was really cool. Sure, years later, like everything else, you can find a crapton of stuff that hasn't aged well (that damn '70s asthetic!...🤣) & where the budget got chopped drastically (probably the best single episode, "The Hand of God" had virtually ZERO exclusive to the show special effects footage), but i also think Galactica as a whole still is very entertaining & holds up surprisingly well today. Of course, the same can't be said of "Galactica 1980" because ABC & Universal REALLY cut the budget per episode to ridiculous extremes. I'm shocked even now to say this, but there WERE worthy episodes - the Pilot & "Return of Starbuck" were great. The 1st Galactica run is an exercise in doing well w/what the studio had to work around. The original "Star Trek" & even "Lost in Space" are the properties everyone remembers, but "Galactica" should've had its own success in that regard as well. There were other sci-fi & geek shows of the era, but one can tell the vision & productions were really shallow. Nobody remembers all the attempts to convert movie properties into TV. I mean, can anyone else remember "Logan's Run" & "Planet of the Apes"? No, because the staff & showrunners on them didn't give a good damn about treating the premises of the movies & just made crap out of of them. BSG '78 was that rare bird which everyone involved in them KNEW what they were doing was special. Proof? Even adding a rebranded "Galactica 1980" to the syndicated package had barely enough episodes to have a full 2 seasons of material. Not even the 3 solid seasons that "Lost in Space" & "Star Trek" had, which was still pretty thin for potential syndication. BSG should've been a blip on TV's radar & forgotten. We still remember it & love it. 'Nuff said!...🙃
Hey Sean I cathy used to weel it was my grandpa he had copy of the original Battlestar Galactica film novel it was pretty old though I think I read it once but I don't know what happend to it
So many people immediately jump to the conclusion that the only reason Battlestar Galactica was a thing was because of Star Wars. People don't realize the show was being worked on at least in rudimentary fashion a number of years before Star Wars ever came out. Now did the fact that Star Wars was such a hit around the time make selling the idea of an outer space TV show easier? Sure. But it wasn't to be all and end all answer. Now as far as Galactica 1980 goes fully admit that 14 year old me absolutely loved it despite all the inherent cheesiness towards the end of the show. But I will give it kudos and I respect for one thing Above All Else. Due to the circumstances around it being canceled certain concepts of the show that never came to fruition or later used in another little sci-fi time travel show called Quantum Leap which turned out to be one of my absolute favorites.
Agreed; it's dark and dreary and depressing and there isn't one redeeming character in it. And Boomer is female too! I read that Dirk Benedict referred to the new Starbuck as Stardoe....
Right it's like a soap opera. The only reason you keep watching it, is to see what finally happens. But after watching it, I didn't want to watch it over again. Which to me, that shows something is lacking...
Loved this show ever since I saw the original movie at the theater. However, the "theatrical" version of the movie that has appeared on VHS , DVD and Blu Ray has two additional scenes that were not in the original theatrical showing, at least not in Canada. The two scenes are where Adama and Tigh speak covertly in the Vipers about the party on Carillon being a trap, and the following scene where Colonel Tigh is caught stealing uniforms from the pilots' quarters. Those two scenes didn't appear until the extended television airing of the pilot. Missing those two scenes made the movie rather confusing, as you had to connect a later conversation with Jolly about "who were those guys" with an earlier scene of Apollo and Starbuck chasing some of the officers in stolen uniforms. It wasn't obvious who they were talking about. I saw the theatrical version twice during it's original run, and again in 1982, as part of a double feature with "The Empire Strikes Back". Perhaps those two scenes could have been missing from the print I saw in 1978, but the odds that I saw the exact same print with the missing scenes four years later are pretty slim.
The television version of the pilot is actually 2 hours and 20 minutes without commercials, with commercials it's 3 hours. So it's technically 15 minutes longer than the theatrical cut. Don't know which version I like better. The televised version has a lot more great character moments in it, however, the theatrical cut is a bit faster paced, loved the part where the man catches on fire on board the Atlantia during the Cylon attack, which was not in the televised version due to the 1970's TV censors, and I loved seeing Baltar's death scene. But really loved the added character moments in the TV version, so I can't choose between the two.
I think they leave out too really great scenes in the theatrical version; the one where Starbuck catches Athena changing her clothes and they talk about her brother Zak being killed. And the one with Athena and Adama in his office where he's telling her about all the people they had to leave on Caprica for lack of room and that he doesn't want the responsibility any longer. Both are really great scenes and should be included in all versions. Ironically the locker room scene with Starbuck and Athena is some of the best acting Maren Jensen did in the show so it's a shame for it not to be seen since a lot of the rest of her acting was subpar to say the least...
@@Gamble661 Maren Jensen definitely tried but her acting just left a lot to be desired. I know she was very inexperienced and had a coach off camera helping her too but still. Just wish she hadn't been pretty much fired from the show later on yo make room for Sheba. There was room for both.
I did stick with it to the end but you're right, not all that great. And not really Battlestar...they took the names and the ships but that's about it. The characters are not nearly as good and it's got way too many political overtones for me.
I watched it, and the stories seemed all the same, who's a cylon? Will they try and blow up the ship? You did want to keep watching though, just to see the finale outcome. It was a soap opera basically, you keep watching to find out what happens, but the actual show is kinda crappy, haha
There's a bit of an oddity on the 16x9 transfer of the pilot. Originally, in the scene where Apollo and Boomer are talking with Jolly about the food situation on the Rising Star, Jolly says "W-w-we went through three ships since last night, it isn't looking good." On the 16x9 transfer, Jolly's stammer on the word "we" is gone. It's on the 4x3 transfer, though. Hope you have a good set. On first release, five minutes was missing out of "The Magnificent Warriors" on the 16x9 set and there was a disc recall.
Do they ever explain how it's 30 years later, but Apollo intercepted a transmission of the Apollo 11 landing in the final episode of Battlestar Galactica?
Nope. G80 should never have happened anyways. cos Lt Boomer said in Hand Of God episode that the transmission could've traveled throughout known space on its Gamma frequency for; 10,000 or; 100,000 thousand years if need be? How long inbetween the Apollo 11 Moon landing and when Galactica herself picked up the transmission was suppose to be very ambiguous at the very least! The 30 year difference for Galactioa 1980's time frame was weak writing!
That would mean fewer episode per disc as they would need double the space. It would be two separate video files for the two versions. But it would still be the same number of discs if they did that. With a movie, it's not as big a deal as it's just a single movie.
Yes, I watched the whole re-imagined series they ran it every day on one channel. You kind of wanted to keep watching to see what finally happens, what is the cylon's plan? But in the end, it didn't make sense. Was actually a soap opera set in space. The commander was good actor, and Balter, but other than that bad characters. And of course too much boring dialog and sexy shots of that blonde girl who wasn't even sexy!!
@@Briscom 2004 series may have been too complex for its own good. They tried to make super intellectual instead of just doing a space drama with exploration. I am partial to the original series because it was way more classic to me. The music in the original was so memorable compared to 2004.
Darn it Zaranyzerak, just pick up the 2000's version already :-) I seem to remember someone sent you the Blood & Steel prequel episode which was a widely disliked standalone addendum released after the main series (ie a cash in) that doesn't represent the feel of the show very well, but don't let that put you off. If you want a genuine taster the season 1 set (which also includes the pilot miniseries) can be picked up for pennies.
is this a widescreen set or a fullscreen set like I I'm guessing the DVDs are like on side widescreen one side fullscreen I'm guessing on the discs is th ed bonus features
The DVDs are fullscreen only. The widescreen version is only available on the Blu-ray sets. The Blu-ray set I have contains both the widescreen and fullscreen sets, as I cover in the video.
Why only fulscrren on DVD and not widescreen on DVD as well I'm just curious because a lot of complete series sets like star trek sets and babyoln 5 I think have widescreen fullscreen options as far as I'm aware
@@zacharyjochumsen9677 Because ir was never intended to be in widescreen. It was shot, framed and aired in fullscreen. The widescreen version was only done to appease the masses who don't understand aspect ratio. Star Trek is absolutely NOT in widescreen, all the Blu-ray present it in the correct 4:3 aspect ratio. Star Trek TV shows weren't shot in widescreen until Enterprise. There is no reason or benefit to having any pre-Enterprise Star Trek shows in widescreen. Babylon 5 was shot in widescreen so yes, it got a widescreen version. The effects shots, however, were made in 4:3 fullscreen, so any shots with effects are zoomed and cropped to fit. Comparing one show to another is pointless when it comes to aspect ratio. The only thing that matters is that the correct intended aspect ratio be available, and sometimes the option for a different aspect ratio if there is actually benefit to doing so. X--Files, for example, was shot "widescreen safe" so the early seasons that were broadcast fullscreen actually look good on the widescreen Blu-rays. Most fullscreen shows, however, were shot full frame which means if you crop it for widescreen you actually LOSE a ton of image off the top and bottom to make the image fit. This is what was done with Battlestar Galactica, and there is literally no benefit or gain from having it in widescreen. Hope this clarifies.
Sean they also got sued because of the star wars comparisons they got taken to court and George Lucas accused the producers of ripping star wars off and stealing ideas and George was apparently opposed to so done making star wars style for TV as if he wanted to make a star wars TV series he couldn't because he felt they spoiled star wars for the television market
No, Peacock isn't available in Canada. And honestly why would I care what streaming service BSG is currently on when I have it on Blu-ray and can watch it any time?
@@zacharyjochumsen9677 No, it's not available in Canada. I'm not interested in it anyway. Not interested in any of those single network streaming services. I have NetFlix and Amazon Prime and that's it. I might get Shudder at some point, but that's really the only other one I have any interest in.

My old LG plasma TV had a picture option called "Horizon" that would make anything 4:3 into 16:9 without losing ANY of the picture. What it did was morph the outer edges of the image in such a clever way that it was hardly noticeable except when the camera itself was panning over complex backgrounds such as a forest or inner city. Why is that a lost option?!
Saying you haven't seen the 2000s BSG series because you like the original is like saying you haven't seen any Doctor Who since the 2005 series revived it. You are missing out on one of the best SciFi (The genre not just the channel) shows ever.
That's not even remotely what I meant. I have nothing against the new series as you seem to be implying, I simply haven't gotten around to it yet. It isn't going anywhere. It will always be out there somewhere for me to see. One day I will, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it. In the mean time, this series is "more special" to me as it's the one I grew up with. Just as Classic Doctor Who is "more special" to me for the same reason, but I also watch and enjoy the new series (which isn't technically a new series, it's a continuation of the original)
No its not. I get a little sick and tired of 2003 NuBSG fans always demanding that the remake series was better it wasn't o.k. there i said it. It was basically a dreary ass show. Nothing was good about it period! If it was so great why keep reminding peoples of its greatness then? Great things are automatically seen as such and don't need other people telling us of that! How come no fan of Ron Moore version ever talks proudly of the 1978 version then by the same token. Cos i don't see you lot doing the same, you'll preach about the remake and disrespect the original at every single opportunity you have at your disposal. So spare me please, you're lucky Zaranyzerak's too nice of a person to give you his real feeling on that piece of sh-t show. Cos so many of us who love the original never hear you remake BSG fans ever say anything appreciative of the classic series at all. You're too busy tossing it under a bus to care?!! But you'll voice your love for the dreary ass remake though 24/7 (rolls eyes) Sorry but the remake didn't re-invent the bloody wheel alright so stop acting like it ever did. The BSG remake was for those people who never were fans of the original series period! Which probably explains why none of the Ron Moore NuBSG lot ever say a nothing respectful of the classic show. *In the mean time, this series is "more special" to me as it's the one I grew up with.* ^(Zaranyzerak's quoted comment) This exactly!
Zaranyzerak You gonna love it and now its tine to see it. I askes you like 8 years ago and you said soon :) I promise you gonna love it. Its worth the bucks spending on the complete set.
The remake is utterly crap, its for people who were never fans of the original series. That show just ain't Battlestar and is the very reason why the fandom is split straight down the middle on both versions. Zaranyzerak still hasn't gotten around to seeing it? what does that tell you about it then, lol. It doesn't truly take 8 years to get around to finally watching a TV show does it?
oh abc television had the show cancelled they were spending 1 million per episode and in 1978 -79 that was crazy money they did not want to continue to flip the bill for it was doing decent in the ratings

No worries, I hope to finish up the Batman stuff by the end of the month. Got a few more I want to do along with the Nolan Trilogy, then it's on to Halloween!
Spare yourself! The 2000 something 'remake' of the Battlestar Galactica saga, was just "Terminator" without Linda Hamilton, Micheal Biehn, and of course, The Mighty 'Ah-nuld'! On a side note, the first DVDs you are showing everyone, are NOT 'dual-layer' DVDs. They're high density 'dual-sided' DVDs. Galactica 1980 was put on dual-layer DVDs.
Dual layer dual sided, that's what I meant. Very problematic format. Universal used them very commonly with their TV show sets at the time. Single layer dual sided had less frequent issues.
The definitive collection for me would also include "Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack" and "Conquest of the Earth". However, this is probably the closest were going to get. It's still nice to have both shows in both full screen and widescreen as well as the movie in one set.
I agree, it would have been nice to have those two movie compilations to make it truly complete. Still nice to have all this on Blu-ray though! They really went all out with this collection otherwise.
I consider this to be kind of like a Star Wars ‘77 TV series. I mean that in a good way. If you’re as disgusted with the new Disney Star Wars sequel movies as I am, you’ll want to go back to ‘77 when it all started. To get the full impact of what it was like when BSG came out, 1st watch Forbidden Planet, then Star Wars ‘77, then this DVD BSG set. You’ll then have the right mindset and revolting visions of Rose Tico and Purple haired Holdo will disappear!
Hmmm....not my rule! I love me some flying motorcycles and bearded Lorne Greene! :D And the episode with Starbuck befriending a Cylon ala Enemy Mine is genuinely good stuff!
@@zaranyzerak I was just joking. I actually like the first two "movies" of the Series. They Cylons meeting Wolfman jack and being defeatd by a Microwave always makes me smile. And the Time travel bit with Nazis was fun. And the "What ever Happened to Starbuck" Finale is one of the Best of Both Series. Sadly most of the Inbetween episodes...yeah those are Cheap Jump the Shark Episodes Sadly....that and not a fan of Dr. Z...Fun vid tho.. I did buy the Red Box on your recommendation.

Killing babies (pilot episode), child pedophilia in the fleet (Pegasus episodes), human Cylons (lol), cold heartless bastards everywhere isn't humanity at its finest. Nor what Battlestar should've been about period!

The original Battlestar Galactica is by far one of the best sci-fi tv series of all time.
thank you for you review !
I need to go back to Battlestar Galactica (born in the 70 ies....). I still remember this Tv serial !
Totally astounding blu-ray library!
Great reviews, thanks!
I have both!
My favorite show!!
And, I saw the cinema version in “sensouround” audio 😮
Late to the party but great, informative, in-depth review.
Loved this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Still better than the boring looking reboot series.

It should be acknowledged that the concept art for Battlestar Galactica was done by Star Wars legend, Ralph Macquarie.
Yes, as soon as I saw that concept art, I recognized Ralph McQuarrie's distinctive style immediately. :)

I vaguely remember watching BSG the night it first aired in 1978. I was almost 5 years old. I mostly only remember the Carillon Casino segments with the insectoid Ovion and the Alien singers with two mouths. I was a fanatic for both BSG and Star Wars as a kid.

In terms of HD quality, the 4x3 version is vastly superior. This was done for the original German release and the colours, texture and depth is spectacular! The 16x9 HD was done by Universal, and while it is good, it lacks the richness of the German version. So again, another reason to watch the original aspect ratio. :)
Cheers for the vital info man!

I noticed recently there's a new box set that has literally everything from the og series to the spinoffs of '04 and I really wish I had a spare $200
I wish they would release the cropped 16:9 HD version for streaming or digital download.
Legendary
*It'll be interesting to see what the coming movie will be like*
^It'll most probably be a remake of Larson's original '78 version since Glen Larson retained all the theatrical rights to any interpretation of Battlestar Galactica. While Universal Studios owns the television rights. a film version won't be based on Ron Moore's remake of BSG that much i do know.
Unless Universal paid the Larson estate a whopper of money in the multi millions to let go of the film copyrights?, which i highly doubt they'll be doing anytime soon.
Great video 👍

You really can't miss McQuarrie's art style. Quite distinctive.
i have season one on HD-DVD. i had never seen or heard anything about it prior. its a fun watch. i may have to pick this set up to get the rest.
Guessing that's Season 1 of the 2004 series? There was only one season of the original, plus the half season 1980 series. The original was never released on HD-DVD.
@@zaranyzerak yes. 2004. first disc is the 2003 miniseries, and the full 2004 season 1. it must have been a near launch release, because there is a pamphlet with it on "how to watch hd-dvd!" lol so theres like 6 pages that tell you how to navigate u-controll, and pop-up menus, and those other new features. hah
The concept art that you see in the dvd set was done by Ralph Mcquarrie who also did all the concept art for the original Star Wars Trilogy.
I realized that after and was kicking myself for not mentioning it! I have some old Star Wars art books with a lot of his work, an amazing artist!
So agreed!
Dennis Muren of Star Wars fame also worked on Galactica.
Out in A Steel Book Now 👍
Bit of random trivia for you, that you probably already know anyway!
By your command.
You are not missing anything with that 2004 reboot. Its impossible to follow and the characters are all wrong
I love the 80s one but the new series blows it out of the water. Its probably my favorite series alongside next gen and farscape.
I tried to watch the reboot series
I just couldn't
I was 1 when the DVD set came out I remember sing a trailer for it on the hulk 2003 DVD disc 1 at the opeing
My Limited Edition DVD set is past away and have now the blu ray Core Collection. Strange Blu ray set the Core Collection there is something missing.
SEAN would you take a look at the stargate sg1 complete set o4 the Babylon 5 sets
Myself when I got the definitive edition I kept the dvd booklet and Cylon case but sold the inner dvd package and keep the blu ray set inside it
Couldn't universal have a single disk that gave you the option of 4:3 or widescreen? I think others do.
That would mean fewer episode per disc as they would need double the space. It would be two separate video files for the two versions. But it would still be the same number of discs if they did that. With a movie, it's not as big a deal as it's just a single movie.
Sean you ever seen chronicles of riddick
I liked the re-imagined series, however, the original will always be my favorite.
Darn it Zaranyzerak, just pick up the 2000's version already :-)

is this a widescreen set or a fullscreen set like I I'm guessing the DVDs are like on side widescreen one side fullscreen I'm guessing on the discs is th ed bonus features
Hope this clarifies.
hey Sean do you watch spacedock he did a video fir a Battlestar Galactica reboot idea

*In the mean time, this series is "more special" to me as it's the one I grew up with.*

The original and best. The irony of the box art is of a Cylon, not Battlestar Galactica. They should have called it, The Cylons.
Universal shouldn’t have included the Galactica 1980, that show wasn’t even canon with the exception of the return of Starbuck!
See the 2004 version, its a fantastic show.
Oh I plan to! All just a matter of when I can drop the bucks on it.
@@MGSBigBoss77 It tells you he hasn't seen it nothing to do with how good it is LOL
oh abc television had the show cancelled they were spending 1 million per episode and in 1978 -79 that was crazy money they did not want to continue to flip the bill for it was doing decent in the ratings
great review sean i was 7 when this came out in 1978 i actually had a correspondence with one of glen larsons sons some years back he had his dad autograph a press kit for me before he died massive fan as for the 2003 re imagined i only watched the miniseries an hated it they did not honor the original even dirk benedict spoke out against many moons ago will never watch the ron moore show i heard is a decent show but it is not battlestar galactica
That was probably Eric Larson.
Infinity a cult tv and sci fi magazine has covered the original series check out lnfinity magazine on their Facebook page.
5:28 So you’re saying KITT is a Cylon? 😨
When is your Batman Begins review coming?
No idea. Maybe soon, maybe never, working on non-Batman stuff atm.
@@zaranyzerak no rush I've just been really curious to see your 2 cents, love your videos been watching since 2014
No worries, I hope to finish up the Batman stuff by the end of the month. Got a few more I want to do along with the Nolan Trilogy, then it's on to Halloween!
@@zaranyzerak one more thing is BVS part of the batman review series
I would even love to see a box set of the telemovies that were cobbled together from other episodes too.
Geez Sean! Remember your BSG Biggest Rule! We Do NOT Talk about that....THING that happened in 1980.....Geeez!
Manhasset music stand!
My grandpa acthuuy used to have the no validation of th batestar glactica 1978 movie I don't know what hppend but it think it got wrecked and ithink I ember seeing somebody have batstar glactica cymon helmet for sale or something
IT COST TOO MUCH MNONEY TO MAKE !
you just lost me when you said you haven't seen the new series
Okay, bye?
You've lost us, how can anybody enjoy that dreary ass remake crap! If Ron Moore remade Star Wars like that fans would've rioted outright. Killing babies (pilot episode), child pedophilia in the fleet (Pegasus episodes), human Cylons (lol), cold heartless bastards everywhere isn't humanity at its finest. Nor what Battlestar should've been about period!
