- Marc Bolan's first single "The Wizard" in 1966 Decca Records. Lyrics: Walking in the woods one day
I met a man who said that he was magic
Wonderful things he said
Pointed hat upon his head
Knew why people laughed and cried
Why they lived and why they died
Shadows followed him around
He walked the woods without a single sound
Golden eagles at his door
Cats and bats played on the floor
Silver sunlight in his eyes
The wizard turned and melted in the sky.
Marc was going into early phsychedelic music, I really want to write a decent book about Marc, but I feel that everything has been said.
All wizardry aside. This is probably my favorite version of this tune. Maybe more that the Johnny Thunders version.
It's great to hear this version. So talented 👍 RIP Marc Bolan ❤️🎶🎸
today was the day he died. 16th September. RIP my hero...

Great track!
This is not Tyrannosaurus Rex but Bolan's first Single "A",Side for Decca.
Marc sounds a lot like Bobby Dylan!
I wish Marc would have continued singing exactly like this throughout his career with John's Children and Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Thank you so much for beautiful comment sweet Brissa! Enjoy your time sweetie;-) love maria xx
♥:) )
If that flute don't scare ya , yer tougher than me ...
Oh no problem, I understand:) )
If this was released today then it would be haled as brilliant.
i feel like i found the holy grail
1965 actually.
Marc met the guy he called The Wizard in Paris in 1965 and had a brief homosexual relationship with him! Cool! Riggs O Hara was his name, an actor, He made a great song out of a brief encounter he had age 18! ❤❤❤
This was on the same release sheet as Crispian St Peters’ You Were on My Mind (19 November 1965). That was a huge hit, this flopped big time.
The original single label is probably the earliest use of a metal umlaut (yöu knöw, thëse lëtters?)
Dylanesque
Very much so. He changed his vocal style after this and added the vibrato
Too bad this version is so short.
Several years later, Ken Hensley of Uriah Heep would write a song with the same title and theme. The first five lines are particularly similar:
He was the wizard of a thousand kings;
And I chanced to meet him one night wandering;
He told me tales and he drank my wine;
Me and my magic man kind of feeling fine.
He had a cloak of gold and eyes of fire ...
Apparently Jimmy Page plays guitar on this
Features Jimmy Page - Guitar.
