    I've been lusting over the dreadnaught version, (DYM60HD), since I heard the story behind the wood that was used. There is a video on the Alverez website, but that Honduran Mahogany has been air drying for over 50 years at the workshop in Japan and they kind of forgot about it until Jack Pearson, (great player, ex-Alman Bros. lead guitar), asked Alverez Yairi to build him a guitar. They realized how special the wood is and decided to build the HD series of guitars until they run out of the wood. I have seen several demos/reviews of these guitars and everyone raves about them.
    Very nice playing!

      Thanks! Yes, I fell for the story myself! I imagine the DYM would be an amazing guitar. Hope you get ahold of one and get to know it first hand.

    Kazuo Yairi made some wonderful guitars. I have a classical guitar he made in 1973. Cedar top with mahogany back and sides. A treasure. RIP Mr. Yairi.

      @@JR-pr8jb I bet it is lovely and sounds great. If it is a K. Yairi and not an Alvarez/Yairi I believe the one piece bridge is standard because the direct coupled design may be licensed for the Alvarez products. There's an active K. Yairi / Alvarez Facebook group with many informed people that may be able to help get more info. Otherwise, you might be able to contact K. Yairi and ask them directly. I've read that they are responsive but can't say for sure. Good luck!

      Yes he did! I also have a 1973 Yairi Classical, but in coral rosewood, whatever that really is. It is stunningly beautiful to look at and the sound is amazing. It's too bad that Kazuo isn't around to see the success of his brand.

      Another 3 finger picker here with a pinky and ring finger plant.
      I played with finger picks (Nationals) from about 1961 to 81..
      then went bare fingered. The video has suggested I dig out my
      box of Pre War Nationals and try them again.

    Hey Jason...great demo, and beautiful playing! I bought one of these Yairi’s a few years ago, and I have been in love ever since. I’ve got quite a few really nice acoustic guitars, but this one would be toughest to part with. I have been meaning to show it off on my own channel, along with a few other Alvarez guitars I own, but I just don’t have the time right now. I have been a huge fan of mahogany since day 1.
    Your video popped up in my recommendations list, and I am glad it did. It’s great to see other owners of this model, and to hear their style of playing. Everything I play (and hear played) on the FYM66HD sounds incredible. It’s very expressive, and does everything I ask of it (as a finger style player).
    I also saw a demo by J.P Cormier, which was awesome. These guitars are Martin and Taylor killers. I sold my Martin 000-15 very quickly after buying the Yairi. The Martin sounded dead and thumpy relative to the Yairi...almost like it had rubber strings on the low end. I wish I made a comparison video, but once I played the Yairi, I didn’t even wanna look at the Martin anymore, lol!
    Anyway, I will sub to your channel, because we have similar tastes in instruments!
    Happy Holidays.
    Peace. 🐰💙🇺🇸🎸🎶🤝✌️

    • @jasonvalcourt
      @jasonvalcourt  Рік тому +1

      Hey thanks! Sometimes I think I'm too overboard for mahogany but I just can't resist. It surely is an expressive instrument. I've gigged with it 4 or times sine adding the pickup and I love it. Almost too amazing for the spat of cover songs I bang out. I was on the fence about keeping it at first, but after giving it a chance I think it elevates my playing actually. Hard to express, but it is a fine piece. I often spend evenings paired up with my Blues 51 and bounce back and forth. The 51(which I absolutely adore) holds its own with a different quality of tone and the neck profile is similar. Alvarez for the win. Sad to hear your 00015 had to go, but I totally understand!

      Thank you. Very cool to be able to be close to high level players. I'd take some of that osmosis any day, must've been amazing. Yes, fingerstyle is very rewarding to have in the toolbox. It opens up chords in a different way and creates a dynamic counterpoint to flatpicked songs, or strummed songs. I'm pretty committed to the fingers, but have been dabbling a bit with flatpicks lately which has been really fun. Cheers

      @@jasonvalcourt Yes, I was quite lucky. I used to do some work for guitarist, Stephen Bennett and later, I worked with Muriel Anderson, Richard Smity, and a show with Tommy Emmanuel. They are all excellent, and while most say Tommy is the best guitarist of those listed, I don't completely agree, because they all bring something different to the table and some are better composers and arrangers than the others. Either way, I learned a lot from all of them, especially Stephen, who I formed a very close relationship with him, as well as with Muriel. They are all blessed with a true gift.

      @@jasonvalcourt Yes, but unfortunately politics can get in the way of some of these great friendships. Most musicians are extremely liberal and some just can't accept anything but their viewpoints, no room for anything else. That is sort of the case with some of these people, but you have to work through it. For instance, Muriel is very accepting, open minded, a sweetheart really. Stephen can be fairly staunch with no room for debate, however, he also has a really good heart. I was sick three years ago, actually I still am, and he flew down from Connecticut to go to both Dallas and Houston, to visit with me a few hours, then get back on a plane home. Very few will do that for you, but again....they can be fairly stubborn when it comes to politics. I try and be accepting when I work with these people, but it's very difficult at times. BTW, technically, I think Richard Smith is one of the best guitarist on the planet. I think Stephen and Muriel are better composers.

    I'm about ready to off my 2015 Martin 00-18V and would be very interested in the 66 HD.
    What holds me back is the nut width which is 1.71 ""/ 1 23/32 ( Gibson's long time standard).

    How does the Alvarez play and sound compared to the FG850?

    • @jasonvalcourt
      @jasonvalcourt  Місяць тому

      The necks are very different. The OM feels faster and is wider and changes in shape. The 850 has that sweet caramel dreadnaught tone, whereas the OM tends toward a parlor tone, slightly compressed. The 850 sounds bigger and luxurious, the OM more focused. The OM is loud all the way up the neck, maybe louder as you go up. Wide string spacing on the OM is a fingerstyle dream. The 850 has wide string spacing at the saddle, whereas not all the FG line does, or maybe the newer ones don't? Hope that isn't too vague/general, cheers!

    Sounds exquisite! Been eyeing one of these Yairis for a while now... I currently have a 000-15SM I love for hog/fingerstyle play but G note (Low E, 3rd fret) is thumpy, wolfy, lacks sustain compared to other notes so I'm thinking of getting something to replace it. Would you say the low G on the FYM66HD sounds full/has good sustain?

    • @jasonvalcourt
      @jasonvalcourt  Рік тому +2

      It is pretty exquisite! It definitely has magic and lives up to expectations for me. Hard to put down once I start playing. The 000-15SM seems like a killer guitar. I bet it sounds great. I love 12 fret necks and mahogany! If there is any diminished sustain on this FYM it may have a touch on the 5th fret, low E string, but this is reeeally splitting hairs. Hard to detect it. If your G note bugs you to the point of thinking of replacing the guitar, I would bring it to a good luthier and have them assess it and give you an informed opinion. I imagine most luthiers would be happy to at least have a look, or answer questions. I'd be curious what you find for answers if you do!
