I don't know directly know anyone who's deaf and I'm not deaf myself, but I would love to be able to communicate with people this way. Even just this one video is great for me
isla_ themacaw I do BSL at home cuz my parents are deaf and trust me your hands would hert and all sorts but that’s only if your new to it but there’s bsl classes you have to be over 12 I think we’re I go so hope you get luck and and if you americain you gotta look up ASL
I was on the bus the other day with my boyfriend & this woman thought we were doing bsl, even though we didn't know anything in sign language. Me, my boyfriend & her all had a lovely, emotional conversation. I didn't realise until a bit later on in the conversation this woman was deaf & I think in actual fact she had got the impression we were too. The conversation was amazing that day and she explained about how she got bullied when she was younger because she had problems with her hearing. Even though the communication between us was different and difficult, she opened up to us and we learnt she had depression and I told her how I did too. She was in tears at that time and I gave her a hug. It was our stop so we had to get off but she had told me everything is going to be okay and that we were lovely people. I'll never forget that day, her name was Zoe.
Thank you. I am learning bsl as my husband became suddenly profoundly deaf last summer. We are going to evening class but I need more practise. To see the signs in motion is much clear Thant pictures on a page.
I work in Home Bargains and there's a deaf couple I serve regularly. The lady can lip read and respond to me, so we can still communicate, but I'd love to learn sign language to make it easier for them both to communicate with me. If there's already a video for helpful phrases that help within retail jobs, I'd hugely appreciate someone directing me to it. If not, it would be a hugely helpful video!
That is very nice of you and I do applaud you for doing so, but just check with your manager first if that is ok because there is a chance that you could get sacked for using a language that your colleagues do not understand. As ridiculous and prejudiced as this sounds, especially as it comes under a disability/customer service thing, I know of so many people who have lost their jobs because they have either spoken foreign languages or tried to use sign language to help customers... Apparently it comes under 'security' which is understandable to some extent, but also bullshit. Just giving you a heads up, not having a go :) xx Either way good luck with learning sign language!
"I know of so many people who have lost their jobs because they have either spoken foreign languages or tried to use sign language to help customers..." Name just one.
I want to know who lost their job for using sign language to help a customer out?! I find it hard in this day and age where people with disabilities have a better and more understanding community that someone will be sacked for using SL..
I worked in the NHS before retiring and the ability to speak multiple languages as well as sign was prized as it allowed us to communicate directly with our patients. I don't understand why anyone would be annoyed/angry/threatened by other people speaking a different language or signing around them. are they so self-important or paranoid that they think the other people are talking about them. I can't think why any manager in a service environment (be it retail or health) that would object to an employee being able to talk to a customer or client.
The good these videos do cannot be overstated. I don't get to sign with my Uncle very often (I live in Canada; he lives in Ireland) but when I do it's invaluable to have a refresher.
I work in retail and the only thing I can sign is thank you, these videos will make it easier for me to have a conversation with my deaf customers too so thank you!
I had a appointment with the headteacher at a school in chelmsford nearly twenty five years ago . I was a apointed as a VIP Vistor . The headteacher had given me a guided tour of the school . He was very professional and the pupils at the school where very polite and well behaved . One school pupil was lost but the headteacher told him where to go by British Sign Language . I was totally sursprised i did not know that the school was teaching Deaf children . It was a fantasic experience for me to see BSL in a school enivroment . That is something i will never forget in my life . I wish i could learn the BSL it is a wonderfull skill to learn . I am now 45 and my life of learning is getting harder .
#loveBSL I've been trying to teach myself some sign language for work as there a few customers who come in with hearing difficulties. A gentleman was really surprised when I was able to ask him if he had finished and if I could clear his table. I have an app to try and help but I'm not 100% sure if the words are in the correct order but if u could do a video for people who work in a shop. Like can I get you anything. Is that everything. Thank you this would be a great help.
I don't know anyone who is deaf but my brother has special needs and he uses sign language at school.I have wanted to communicate this way with him for a while as he doesn't really understand what we say sometimes. So thank you for making this video for me to say a few things too him. I can't wait to learn more.
#loveBSL few basic phrases please; Yes No Stop Are you hungry? I’m hungry Please I’m finished Are you finished Do you need toilet??? I need toilet Thankyou They may seem a bit basic but I’m very new to this and would like to learn for my son. Thankyou
My moms a social worker and knows a bit of sign language, and I want to be able to talk with her using sign language whenever I’m upset because I hate speaking at time like that. It would help our relationship a lot and I’m so glad that you made this video! Even if it’s only a few phrases these can help me get used to sign language!
I'm trying to learn sign language not because anyone I know is deaf (in fact I haven't ever really met a deaf person before!) , but because I've seen how intelligent some deaf people are. I was watching a talent show and a man came on and he was a contemporary dancer and was so wonderful, the way he would dance to the vibrations. It made me really emotional. My mum also works at this place of disabled kids and is learning it because there's this one deaf kid she wants to communicate with. Another factor is that recently I've read a story about a guy trying to win over another guy he likes through sign language ! And I just thought how cool it would be if I were able to communicate with people that can't hear nor talk. It's a pretty cool strategy to have. I really admire people that know SL.
It really helps that the person demonstrating sign also is a clear lip-speaker - So many (a large percentage) hearing-impaired people never grew up learning sign but can lip-read. Too often deaf translators/interpreters are almost impossible to lip-read
We've just had a lady join our Alcoholics Anonymous meeting who is deaf. She brings with her an interpreter (the interpreter has to get a certain amount of hours in for her degree), but I'd like to learn a little to make her feel more welcome. So thanks for this; I know now how to say 'Hello' and 'Good evening' to her. But I would like to introduce myself as an alcoholic "My name is _____, and I'm an alcoholic". Does anyone know where I can find how to sign 'alcoholic' from?
I am unilaterally deaf on my lead side. One of my favourite activities is Scuba Diving, my Doctor says that diving could make my right ear which is like 80% even worse. An implant nor a hearing aid will help me. So if my hearing does get worse at least I’ll have this to fall back on 😊
Very helpful video! I am in the ASL Program at my college, but we never explore the differences between American and British Sign Language. I will use these signs in my future travels!
I know enough American Sign Language to hold a conversation but know almost no British Sign Language. I look forward to learning more, thanks for the video!
My aunts and uncle, and cousins are death so I am trying to improve upon my average bsl. You 'breakdowns' helped me revise the basics.Thank you, it will mean the world to my family to be able to communicate to them easily.
Thank you ladies for a left and right view...I home school my youngest and always wanted to learn signing.as we have learnt to finger spell(bsl) in one day...and spelling is improving my child rushes to the tv and we watch learn and talk n test each other...I must say Thank you as it has woken her need to learn again after getting bored with basic school work;)
#LoveBSL I'm learning because my step dad is going deaf and I love being able to speak to deaf customers in my shop... What I want to learn is more colloquial language such as "long time no see" or expressive such as "crikey" or "oh my goodness" or even just some slang that BSL uses, I know no slang whatsoever so learning a bit may make me seen less formal to customers
I as you can see from the profile photo an a Father Christmas. I only do it for the Somerset Reindeer Ranch, they have a special need day so I thought it would be nice if i could communicate in this way. Thank you, the video is good
Fantastic. Thanks for this. I learnt the alphabet one morning at school many many years ago and I've been interested in bsl since. I'm going to start learning in more depth!
im learning bsl because i think it is an amazing skill to have and i hope that if anyone deaf ever joins my school or we meet i can communicate with them so they arent lonely :)
You guys are totally amazing! I've always wanted to lear BSL and now I've decided to give it a go, and these videos are a really good start! Personally I believe BSL should be part of the national curriculum for children, but sadly I can't see the current government introducing this sadly.
since ive been been off work with depression and anxiety issues i need something to take my mind of of things. I've always wanted to learn sign language but never had the time and now that i have more time on my hands.
you are not thick. people learn at different speeds. be kind and patient with yourself. play it over and over. you might need to see it a hundred times. that is cool. babies learn their mother tongue slowly with lots of repetition.
It took me three of four attempts to see that start point of "good morning", you aren't alone there ;-) You are trying and that's what matters. As someone said, change the speed of the video or just hitting space bar to pause it will help ;-)
I decided I wanted to learn this recently. I woek in Waitrose. A regular customer has a deaf son, he's 8. I copied "goodbye, see you next week" from the sign interpetor on late night tv, and signed it at him, and his (and his mother's) faces lit up. Later, my manager told me she'd said to him on her way out how touched she was that i'd done that. She said that most people don't even think to face him so he can try to lip read, they just talk louder or ignore him and just talk to her. Now I find myself wanting to learn more, just because I don't want that kid to think the whole world doesn't care.
#lovebls could you do numbers I just want to learn sign because since i was in year 3 I thought it was so cool to communicate with everyone deaf or not :)
I'm learning this cause, I'm interested about this. After watching an anime about a deaf girl, I was curious and then found this channel. Please carry on with this seen as its helpful~
I have always wanted to learn because I think it would be great to know, plus if you were ever out and someone was having difficulties, you could help. You could also communicate with those who know it if you were having a horrendously emotional day (like I do frequently being someone with mental health issues)
i have an Aunt who is deaf, i learnt to sign letters when i was young, i am now learning some basic BSL sign language atm. thank you #loveBSL would love to learn alot more basic BSL. do you have other videos out with more BSL sign language ?
#loveBSL it would be great if you could upload a video around horse riding. I am a trainee coach at a riding school for people with special needs. We have two lovely deaf children and while we understand each other without me using BSL, I would love to learn a bit to communicate better and show my respect. :)
I am left-handed, but I learnt to sign right-handed. The reason was that I worked in a special school, and everyone else was right-handed. I felt if I was different it could confuse the children. There are also one or two signs that don't make sense done left-handed ( I can't remember which, now, though) I'm currently doing a council-run BSL course, which is this evening, so now I have to go!! 😀
im learning sign language in strettford her names minna she is deaf i really enjoy sign language its really something to do and enjoy so thanks for the vid
I’m an American here in Scotland for my husband’s work. 18 months ago in California, I retired from teaching American Sign Language to hearing high school students. Before that, I was an interpreter. ASL is inside me forever, but it does me no good here. So I want to learn BSL. Friends tell me it IS possible to become “bilingual” in signing- we shall see!
They should do a class like this in school, me and another few kids have made it our mission to learn BSL as one of our friends is slowly going deaf (and we can talk to each other in classes )
#loveBSL I'm learning to make it easier for me to communicate with my mum's friends children. She has twins that I help her look after occasionally but I want to try and help out more, they've just started school; one has down syndrome and the other has severe cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
We've recently been assigned a social worker (long story) and she is deaf, she brings her interpreter with her but we've all decided to pick up a few basic phrases in bsl.
I'm german so I have a question about this: does everyone learn BSL like I learned English as a foreign language at school? Can I talk to deaf people in Germany using BSL? I don't want to insult anybody by signing something rude ...
Deaf people in Germany who use sign language will use Deutsche Gebärdensprache or DGS and unless they learnt BSL as a second language they will not understand you if you try to communicate using it. Sign languages are not universal and just like spoken languages they differ between countries and regions. Hope this helps.
#lovebsl great videos 😀 I've just started working with my local day Services and want to start learning BSL and makaton to help my communication with service users 👍
I'm learning because in starting to lose my hearing, have gone deaf in my left ear and wish to be able to converse for of I do lose my hearing in total.
Hi, I am a free lance medic for events, one thing that worries me is not knowing what deaf people who use bsl are saying if there was an emergency, could you do an episode about getting help please
Hi. I'm am hearing but would love to sign. These videos are a great help especially when you repeat signs or explain them slowly. My question is "does it matter if you change hands during signing. Would someone you are signing to expect you to be completely right handed or completely left handed? I tend to swap half way through a word.
#i love bsl can we do sign that I could use at work, i work in a pub/restaurant and would like to learn things like how is your food and can I get you anything else we also have to ask if our guest have any allergies or dietary requirements anything that would be said in that environment would be great
One of my favourite teachers in high school her little girl has talking difficulties I’m trying to start to learn sign language as Ive always wanted to learn but now I would like to communicate to the little girl when Miss brings her into school.
I don't know directly know anyone who's deaf and I'm not deaf myself, but I would love to be able to communicate with people this way. Even just this one video is great for me

I'm learning so I can talk to other humans in silence so the extra terrestrial machines that are wiping out my village don't hear us and attack.
Mr Tea well played 👍
you are amazing
Like 'A Quiet Place', then?
Or flying monsters from an undiscovered cave
Mr Tea the silence
I remember on CBBC there would be a person in the corner signing what was going on for deaf people
I used to find that more interesting than the TV shows tbh 😂
Yesssss
I remember that. I was confused as to what they were doing
I used to copy them lol
this is fantastic. i love how you break down each phrase which makes it easier for me to follow the signs.
I'm learning cuz a girl I have a crush on is deaf. :)
Technicolour
Good luck
Technicolour aww, so sweet ^^ good luck~!
Technicolour aww, so sweet ^^ good luck~!
Technicolour oh god you are what all boys should be (or girls if you roll that way)

The good these videos do cannot be overstated. I don't get to sign with my Uncle very often (I live in Canada; he lives in Ireland) but when I do it's invaluable to have a refresher.

Tosh idk if your problem's been solved, but you can download a bsl dictionary on your phone
I work in retail and one of our customers is deaf and these videos are a great help for me to talk to her
This is a really good video! Amazing to learn from!
I am unilaterally deaf on my lead side. One of my favourite activities is Scuba Diving, my Doctor says that diving could make my right ear which is like 80% even worse. An implant nor a hearing aid will help me. So if my hearing does get worse at least I’ll have this to fall back on 😊
really loving the videos trying to learn how to sign so simple to copy great teachers thanks
I decdied it would be a good idea to learn during the lockdown, but this is too fast to follow.

Too fast for me. Couldn't follow. Guess I'm kind of thick and need extra help
Hi Simon, you can adjust the speed of the video playback in the settings, it's the little cog icon in the bottom right of the screen. I hope it helps.
Me too 🙃

As a person who speaks ASL (American Sign Language), this is very interesting to watch.
Your website is no longer working. I don't use Facebook.
Fantastic, thank you. I've used an excerpt from this video as part of an English teaching blog for Brazilians, if that's ok!
I am learning ASL, ESL, and now I am learning BSL!! I love learning sign language!! #2019
Woah, you must have an incredible memory...👏😁
#lovebls could you do numbers I just want to learn sign because since i was in year 3 I thought it was so cool to communicate with everyone deaf or not :)

A Silent Voice by any chance?
I have always wanted to learn because I think it would be great to know, plus if you were ever out and someone was having difficulties, you could help. You could also communicate with those who know it if you were having a horrendously emotional day (like I do frequently being someone with mental health issues)
I learnt a bit of French sign language in school and the differences are impressive
i would like to start working with people who are deaf. i already know a bit of bsl and i love it!
i have an Aunt who is deaf, i learnt to sign letters when i was young, i am now learning some basic BSL sign language atm. thank you #loveBSL would love to learn alot more basic BSL. do you have other videos out with more BSL sign language ?

Me and my friend are both learning this so we can communicate in class :)
#loveBSL I am learning because I want to enter a world to connect with special people.
Would love to learn more, my brother went to Exeter deaf academy and I've not had the time to learn but didn't know where to start
E
Wee bit too quick.
I’m learning because it would be fun to talk secretly in class😂 and I have a deaf friends
I have selective mutism, so I’m trying to learn sign language to help me in school and with friends
This video is great, my only critical feed back would be to slow the movements down a little more for complete beginners!
We've recently been assigned a social worker (long story) and she is deaf, she brings her interpreter with her but we've all decided to pick up a few basic phrases in bsl.
#loveBSL 💚💚
I'm learning so I can talk to the deaf
And to talk to my friends that aren't deaf it's fun
I'm german so I have a question about this: does everyone learn BSL like I learned English as a foreign language at school? Can I talk to deaf people in Germany using BSL? I don't want to insult anybody by signing something rude ...
Deaf people in Germany who use sign language will use Deutsche Gebärdensprache or DGS and unless they learnt BSL as a second language they will not understand you if you try to communicate using it. Sign languages are not universal and just like spoken languages they differ between countries and regions. Hope this helps.
Kirstie Ferriday Thank you very much. This is kind of sad. I thought if I could sign BSL and everyone would understand.
It's a shame it's not a universal language >
well, I learnt of LSF ( French sign language) at school and even the base is different. So I assume no.
* a bit of
I want to learn sign language randomly, it's something I have always wanted to do and I just think it will be another special skill
#lovebsl great videos 😀 I've just started working with my local day Services and want to start learning BSL and makaton to help my communication with service users 👍
I'm learning because in starting to lose my hearing, have gone deaf in my left ear and wish to be able to converse for of I do lose my hearing in total.
I’m learning cause I get a lot of deaf customers in the place I work!
why is there no sound?
#lovebsl I’m deaf myself I use bsl and I would love to see cookery videos
Hi, I am a free lance medic for events, one thing that worries me is not knowing what deaf people who use bsl are saying if there was an emergency, could you do an episode about getting help please
Hi. I'm am hearing but would love to sign. These videos are a great help especially when you repeat signs or explain them slowly. My question is "does it matter if you change hands during signing. Would someone you are signing to expect you to be completely right handed or completely left handed? I tend to swap half way through a word.
Someone call me a moron and i was hearing earing aids so i did it back!!

Can anyone tell me why you have to use your left hand to wave if you are right handed and vice versa? Does it make a difference?
