Perfect timing! I have literally just returned from a test drive in a gunmetal grey Ariya here in sunny England. Bear in mind we have owned a 2018 Leaf for over 2 years and own a 2011 Leaf too (great fun and peppy!), plus have driven a Tesla Model 3 and a Polestar 2. I have followed EVs since GM announced their AUTOnomy Hy-wire hydrogen car in 2002 at the Paris auto show. Other than the awful haptic controls for changing the driving mode (Sports/Standard/Eco) and ePedal status, the thing is stunning and huge. You have to see it in person up close. Driving it is like being in any large SUV, but very refined and the cabin is quiet. The whole dashboard looks fantastic and the infotainment system is fast, although some aspects such as DAB radio controls are a bit dated, but all the graphics to do with the vehicle (seat heating etc) and speed/energy usage dials are modern and look very Japanese retro sports car - a good thing! It is going to be very hard to choose which EV to buy from a design and feature angle. Tomorrow we try an IONIQ 5, but I think the Ariya is going to win due to the high ride height that makes getting in and out less of a strain on the back, stunning looks and the general Nissan build quality. Nissan are going to do very well with the Ariya once people see one up close in one of the cool colours Nissan offer. The Tesla Model Y, IONIQ 5, Ariya, Polestar 2 and MG4 are going to do much to take EVs to the next level of sales. 3-4 years from now, they will be 25% cheaper and do 500 miles, but for now...
In 3-4 they’ll be 25% cheaper? Do you even follow the market anyhow? How the businesses are doing and dealing with the supply shortages? Those are 25% more expensive than half a year ago. In 3-4 years the EV and battery and mineral crisis will become official, not how it’s swept under the rug right now as some of the mineral surpluses already have been depleted that were supposed to last for years. And this got nothing to do with Covid, it’s the current situation. New battery tech will start appearing maybe in 10 years but those will be first models. Expect them to go back to 2020 prices by 2035-2040 at earliest.
A month ago I had the Ariya on loan for a full day here in Japan, and it's a beautiful vehicle, I liked it more than my current Nissan leaf in terms of road noise and overall comfort. It felt truly luxurious, like really floating above the road. But I drive a lot in the very narrow Japanese mountain roads so it's a bit too big for that :-)
While it is expensive, at the very least it looks the part. Its a couple grand cheaper than the model 3 and yes tesla is better in the speed/range department but the quality is on the lower side
If you can charge at home during off peak hours or at work (bye bye fossil stations), and with a minimum of maintenance that's worth several grand right there during the ownership period of the vehicle. Not to mention used EV prices don't depreciate nearly as badly as ICE vehicles. One thing they didn't mention (I could have missed it) is the Li ion battery is thermally managed, unlike the current Leaf, so degradation won't be an issue unless there is a defect (modern EVs hit 300k km with most of their range intact).
Nice looking exterior design and I appreciate that grille design representing the parting clouds and rising sun. I also like that clean design in the interior. Departure from gloss black is great! OTA updates -- about time!! (I drive a Tesla Model 3 and appreciate all the updates.) I do think that all manufacturers offering Apple Car Play will start billing for the app (because Apple bills them!). Ditto Google. One pedal is the way to go! For sure. Besides convenience, I think it improves range too. Lots of battery size/range options. With increased build out of charge networks, this is a great step forward for Nissan. [Looking forward to a Honda EV here; the cute mini one in the EU isn't marketed here, of course.] This is a really nice review; thanks!
I had a 2012 LEAF which I traded for a 2022 LEAF. Recently I was able to sit in an Ariya which was in the dealer showroom while my LEAF was getting its state inspection. They let me turn it on and its controls looked in some ways like the LEAF, but there were also some new features. While I'll not be in the market for a new car for a while, I was certainly impressed by the Ariya. I'll recommend it to my sister and brother-in-law, who will probably be buying a new car in the next couple of years. And Nissan will be my go-to brand for another EV when I'm ready.

Great car. NO TO HAPTICS 😭
Ah.... another "review" where you are forbidden from mentioning industry leader Tesla, or any of the features of their cars that have been BEV standards for years. Wow, the battery is low down and between the wheels... amazing handling!!! Wow there's a flat floor with no tunnel for the exhaust pipe! Amazing!!!
The rear armrest needs a pull... that's your beef with this car? How about you show people what's under the hood and how much cargo space is there?
"216 miles of range. That's still 116 miles more than the Mazda MX-30" WHICH ONLY SOLD 8 IN JULY AND IS NOW OUT OF STOCK... THOUGHT TO BE DISCONTINUED... BECAUSE IT SUCKS!!! Not a good benchmark to measure the Ariya against.
Did you try charging it up? Max AC and DC charging rates? (in kilowatts) What is the quality of the nationwide (we presume) charging network?
This car has been delayed many times. Hopefully Nissan can produce enough to not go bankrupt.
I love how she completely glosses over the trunk space or the lack thereof which I consider to be the biggest weakness of this car
apprx 23 cubic feet, not bad for a coupe style suv
They sold out the Ariya for 2023 up here in Canada. Like they made a hundred or so? LOL. What a joke.
This needs a big update… the Toyota b,zed can’t keep its wheels on.. what? The Mazda has sold about 30 and won’t be coming back next year… Subaru, we’ll see Toyota. The Japanese on the whole suck.
it's a Nissan.. first model year.. wayyy 2 expensive can buy a 2 motor of tesla 4 that's in its 12 year for around same cost with rebates since made in america
My Nissan Leaf lasted 48k miles and died with Regulator and motor failure. Nissan wouldn't help as car was 9 years old. despite full Nissan service history - purchase with caution
Rear visibility is the bad issue with this car.
You are only 5,5. If you are 6ft or bigger it maybe to tight
It kinda looks like a telsa
Sucks nissan could not offer a non leather steering wheel.
Those capacitive buttons are a major liability for distracted driving
There are so many deserved burns at the other Japanese automakers there. It wasn't that long ago Nissan was considered a terrible brand but now they seem to be the only Japanese automaker with some sense.
Peacock booty - Lyn Woodward 2022 2:17
I forgot Nissan still made EVs
At this rate everyone has to!
oh my god !! this Vehicle and overall body style front look exactly like my 2012 Toyota Venza !!
No. Just no.
I need buttons and knobs. Period.
You mentioned the Mazda MX30 more times than the number of MX30s Mazda will ever sell.
🤣Facts 🤣🤣
They need to be shamed on that turd every day for the next decade.
@@xiaoka Mazda should be ashamed of itself overall, they don’t really sell to well even in Japan, will last in Europe 10 years tops, don’t have a profitable side business like Honda does with motorcycles, to keep the pointless not selling at all cars on the market.
I believe Mazda sold 8
