Back then, you couldn't drop nades so the only way to get rid of their nades was to throw in a thin air. Ofc the reason behind it was to buy other nades like HE -> Flashbang or smoke

@@symbolitical4158 You could throw it up in the air and thats the safest way to throw it while not damaging your teammate/yourself. The exception is if there is a skybox which is low enough to bounce the nade back and actually hit your teammate. And in that case, you would like to aim a bit lower than that. I assume that ScreaM was worried about the skybox so that's why he threw it like that in this video.
Also, you don't want to throw straight foward because the nade you throw might get blocked by your teammate and actually hurt someone. Or if it gets thrown to the route of your teammate, it also can damage someone or make someone stop to avoid getting damaged, which will cause him to slowdown.
So the best scenario would be throwing up in the sky vertically(if you know there's no or high enough skybox) or at the spot where no one would get pass by.
