I REALLY appreciate you running music production benchmarks. It's a key use case for Macs specifically but very few reviewers test audio at all, and when they do it's some sort of encoding test as opposed to DAW performance which is what actually, you know, matters.
I'd love to see you guys also test ambient noise with the fans for these products. One of the big selling points is how quiet they are while they/you work. So, testing the ambient decibels while Idle, medium load, heavy, and forced max would be great to compare - especially for those who do audio recording, or simply like a quiet workspace.
@@MarkBurgingerQubitsToyMost mini's are super silent I've noticed (I've got 2 older models). The M2's are given more power and heat compared to the M1 Mini from what I've seen, so they "may" require higher fan speeds. I've seen from some reviews that the M1 Studio has some noise, so that's what I'm wondering about. But it's a good metric to cover so there isn't any guesses or surprise after purchase.
I have a blow dryer of a windows desktop at home with a 4090 and undervolted 7950x. It's white noise to me at this point, I just want to make sure the device is properly cooled. That said, I'm going for the most cost effective solution and the M2 mini takes the cake.
Be careful about those predictions: Apple released the Mac Studio M2 Max at WWDC just a few weeks ago. The Mini would require $700 in upgrades just to get to rough parity with the baseline Studio, which would still have 11 more GPU cores than the upgraded Mini. I'm guessing those benchmark results come out a little different now, with the Studio being the more powerful CPU/GPU combination overall. It would be fun to see those same tests again with the M2 Pro vs M2 Max configurations.
The info you guys put out especially about the SSD situation is so helpful and I'm sure will help many people to avoid getting the wrong machine for them, thanks!
I must say, you cover a lot of bases that many standard reviewers (on here, at least) leave aside or only address briefly. Your coverage is very throrough and the effort placed is immediately noticeable and appreciated. It gives us who may be interested lots more to consider and be able to make an informed choice. Thank you for all the time you invest into this!!
I agree that the performance of these machines is seriously impressive, and the fact that the Mac Mini can match or exceed the Mac Studio is astounding. This video was great! It never ceases to amaze me how much Apple sometimes fails to give us in terms of information to increase their sales. I really appreciate your comprehensive analysis and benchmark testing, as well as the real-world comparisons of these two products. It has helped me to make an informed decision about my upcoming purchase. Thanks guys
Please tell me which will be better for me. Editing videos in Davinci resolve & After effects Option 1 - Mac mini m2 pro ( base version ) Option 2 - i5 13600k + Rtx 3060ti ( 32 GB 3600mhz )
I’m at July 2024 and now there is Mac Studio up to 76 core GPU, 34 core neural engine, and 24 core CPU. Up to 192 GB of unified memory with the M2 Ultra chip.
I must say that I don't like how hot the mini pro can be, for me that is a reason to pick the mac studio, over the long run of time that can have some impact.
@MaxTech Do you intend to compare the 10 cores M2 Pro Mac mini vs the 12 cores version tested here ? I cannot find any such comparative test over UA-cam. Thanks for the great test videos !
I would love to see the performance difference while editing Photos / Videos or coding projects that are stored in an external thunderbolt drive. Hope this SSD Gate would stop in future release of Macs. Also, I wish they bring back storage upgradability in Mac Mini.
Great video Max! I remember watching you camera reviews way back when, lol. Just a thought, change your background for the new year...or at least that sad bare white tree with led lights, lol
Sturggling to decide between M1 Max 32/32 baseline vs M2 Pro Mini 19/32. For an upgrade from old ass iMac, for 3d design, Adobe Programs. Mind you, I'm just starting out 3D and need a new system to get started.
What are you talking about in the Logic section? Higher clocks resulting in less stability and that is supposed to lower the score? I don‘t know much about MacOS internally, but I have been overclocking CPUs on Windows for many years now and there is no such thing as lower scores because of less stability. It‘s either stable at higher clocks and you get better results or it crashes when it‘s unstable. Please explain further when you make such statements.
Amazing video! I especially loved the analytical insights, benchmark testing, and in-depth comparisons for both machines since I am in the process of making a decision for my upcoming Mac purchase. Thank you for the video👌
I would really want a newer MacBook for my school film project, right now I’m working with a old 13 inch 2016 Intel MacBook Pro, and it really struggles in video editing, I would really want to use the way better performance of the new MacBooks and Mac mini!
Hey Max, great to know that the Mini is great for developers. I am a software developer that uses not only XCode, but also NodeJS, ReactJS, NextJS, Docker, Android Studio and so on… In the future could you please test more developer tools? Everyone is focused in video benchmarks, but these machines are also for devs.
Do you really think it takes another year maybe for the updated Mac Studio? I hope it comes out in March !!! Otherwise i should buy the Mac Studio now.
I think using Ableton may be a better music production "stress tester" than Logic. I honestly don't think the amount of users on Logic outnumber Ableton users.
Ok I like the comparison here for the studio and mini. Was exciting to see the new mini come out along with the pro model . I have my 2014 model i5 base model from then. Haven’t used it in years lol. Thanks for these videos. Helps me a lot.
I think I'm going to add a mac mini to my setup again. I switched to using windows for everything a while back, but for some projects, especially anything audio related, macs were just much less of a pain to use.
The Mac model that I am waiting for is the Mac Pro with any MX chip. Considering the pace at which Apple is updating the Minis, the iPads and the Macbooks, while the Mac Pro is still sold with an Intel chip inside, I wonder if there is a future for this unit.
What if they put Max chip in Mini - it would throttle then a ton? 🤔🤔 I guess by the time they introduce 3nm tech, the Studio model could be put into Mini form. :)
I want to do Adobe Lightroom and web browsing. My budget doesn't matter but I also don't want to waste money either. Still conflicted between the 2. Any suggestions?
This is interesting. I do like the studio’s cooling, front io, 10 gig Ethernet, but Mac Mini’s HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.0. I feel like the Mac Studio’s are in limbo between the Mac Mini, and 2023/24 Mac Pro. I’d say the Mac Pro would be only appealing if it were modular and upgradeable but I think the Mac studios are priced around the sweet spot. It would be amazing to have an M2 Studio Ultra.

I’m honestly so thankful for this channel, these guys did every possible comparison for all kind of buying situations. really impressive
agree. I made my buying decisions based on their comparison reviews of M1 vs M2
Amen.

Design wise I'll certainly prefer Mac studio but I'm completely blown away by the performance of Mac mini M2, it's just awesome!!
M2 Pro

I just couldn’t wait for the mini pro anymore so went with the Studio. Killer machine no regrets.
Which model did you go for?
Did the same in last April and no regrets either.
@@PolluxChung base or Ultra?
And you’re gonna have a very powerful computer for years, I’d have no regrets either
Same for me, came from a pro background got an Ultra and couldn’t be happier
Always loved your side by side comparisons and how much detail you put into them. Never seen any other UA-cam channel go into so much depth.

Amazing breakdown of how the Mac mini and the Mac Studio compare. Just goes to show the power of M2 Pro Chip. Great video!

Editing videos in Davinci resolve & After effects
Option 1 - Mac mini m2 pro ( base version )
Option 2 - i5 13600k + Rtx 3060ti ( 32 GB 3600mhz )
You are my goto for in depth real world tests. Nice work.
The photo rendering performance is incredible but what if you need a devise for both photoshop and video editing? 🤔
I personally love the black port layout and the sleek design of the Mac Mini. Plus the low price is hard to beat
I have to say, the better cooling in the Studio do it for me!❤

Thks for the detailed reviews for the m2 pro series. Helps me greatly in my decision on which to get.
