I am SOOO happy these videos are helpful for you! Please let me know if you have any questions! I am always here (even if I take a little time, I will always respond!) Thank you for leaving a positive comment!
Thank you! This video was helpful. I have little children and I get very nervous talking to people. I still wonder how I can make it work but I really need the financial assistance. Your video, at least made it possible for me to process the possibility.
Of course!! Thank you so much for commenting. I am so happy this video was helpful for you. Please let me know if you have any questions! I am always here to help as much as I can!! Of course! Thank you for commenting! TA-ing for the first time is understandably a little nerve wrecking!!! But it's gets better with time and practice! I'm sure you'll do great! 11:58 only if you are the only TA but I find that when there are many TAs teaching at the same time, you can’t advocate for yourself because they try to dilute things if you know what i mean.
Having multiple TAs definitely can complicate things! The politics are completely different. Sometimes advocated for yourself may require a private email or chat that directly expresses your needs/concerns.... though I understand that can be uncomfortable especially if the other TAs are appearing as if everything is fine (even when sometimes EVERYONE KNOWS its not). I know exactly what you mean and can totally understand how these circumstances make advocating difficult and even impossible sometimes!!!!! I am so sorry you have to deal with that! Please let me know if there are any questions that may be able to help... even if its just a little bit!
@@woleolaoye7251 my first time through I played it by ear. Confusing students was my biggest weakness because I didn't understand their academic background. Learning what students need to hear vs what you should keep inside your head as the ta to save students time and confusion is a big topic I still reflect on.
@@woleolaoye7251 you might learn lessons about race and gender that I didn't have to. I was a chubby buff bald ish white guy who seemed like a drill Sargent. Black guy teaching freshman chemistry lab is probably quieter and more matter of fact than me. Women teaching chemistry lab say sexual harassment from older men can become a problem.
Thanks for the video…. I’m here dying bcz of me being a TA, i don’t want to teach, this is not my end goal. I’m learning a lot and developing professionally but it’s competing with all my other priorities (research + course work). I’m a human, I can’t click a button and switch to “research mode” after being immersed in my TA work for days!!!
It is definitely a balancing act that....uhmmm... More times than not will not work out! You are totally not alone at all! I am happy you found this video useful but can understand how much of a chore teaching can be ESPECIALLY if you don't like it! Please let me know if you have any questions or any way I can help! Thank you for sharing your experience, I am sure a lot of people will feel very validated to hear your perspective!
Yes! There is not a lot of info out there about what it means to be a TA! So sometimes we have to find out the hard way! I am so sorry you had to go through that!
I honestly missed details in the lab manual. I skimmed. A certain student who always got an A deliberately reacted MG and zn to redox a color change and we lost ten bucks. I didn't read that part of the lab manual before lab. I prayed to the ta gods that I got my students good even though i didn't completely finish my pre lab as their ta you know?
I am sure they ended up fine at the end of the day! As TAs we don't really get a lot of support so mistakes are bound to happen. I can tell you cared and tried your best and at a certain point that is really all that matters!
I'd walk into the lab around ten o clock in the morning and say hey morning ta, I'm teaching the afternoon section. What should I know before I teach so that I can deliver unto them the best curriculum possible? The other ta would learn me good on the common mistakes of the students so I'd catch them faster in my section when students made them. If you know common mistakes you can save massive amounts of time for your students.
I have a question, I’m a GA and it has nothing to do with my career interest. I was okay with just doing Office work and no research at first, but now I’ve been given two more people to work for and I just don’t think it’s worth the stress with my schooling. I also would like to research and cannot do that given my role. Any suggestions?
Hi! I always think you should follow your gut and do what you really want to. Being a GA is great experience, but if you prefer to more towards more research I think it would be equally great or even better to do so! I would look around campus to see if there are any research positions that can help you! A lot of time they offer the same benefits as other student academic employee positions. Please keep me updated! Let me know if you have any more questions! Thank you for commenting!
Don't be a prolific ta, I learned that lesson the hard way, too. You can spend days writing on their lab reports and they'll never read it. Half of them don't even want their lab reports back.
Can I teach Arabic at the Arabic department since Arabic is one of my native languages regardless the fact that my second MA is in TESOL or should I apply for a TAship based on my first MA
Hi again! Yes I think it's best to apply to all the different types of TAships you would like to work in. It's better to cast a wide net and see where you land than to limit yourself!
This was sooo helpful even a couple years later! I recently got into grad school and got offered a TAship and i HAVE to teach. I have no desire to teach but I couldn’t turn down the financial burdens it lifted accepting the job, so im a nervous wreck starting the school year in a couple weeks : ( I’ll be teaching remedial English to college freshmen who aren’t “college ready” in reading and writing. Although I am literally getting my MFA in writing, i just keep thinking… can I REALLY do this ?! I guess because i never taught a class a day in my life 🥲 but my husband was sweet and said “who knows? maybe you’ll find joy teaching and will want to become a professor,” but i guess we’ll see! 🥲
I can understand every bit of that! I only got into teaching because I DESPARATELY needed the money. But I fell in love and it low-key became my WHOLE personality lol I am so happy this video helped you feel a little better. Teaching can be the most magical thing you do, but it also can be a lot. So please never hesitate to ask a question, I will always do my best to be helpful! I do have an entire playlist on teaching tips, tricks, and vlogs if that is helpful for you! ua-cam.com/play/PLY-K7nK2wQ2XbzUS3bMSnwf1kbKAvdU0l.html

I used to go in another tas section and bum tricks of the trade for use later that day. I guess my students liked my laid back temperament.
Oh! That is such a good strategy! Thank you for sharing!!!
could you please expatiate your strategies, I will start my TA role by fall 2023.

Is it the student who selects the position as a teaching assistant or research assistant?
hi, so a student can apply to request the position but in general it is usually the department chair/professors that make the final say!
I like how she disciplines herself to teach and I got dismissed by blowing off the research.
Thank you for sharing your perspective!
