I love that Gordon's "pegao" is so viscerally upsetting to every Puerto Rican I've seen react to it that they just can't help but double or triple their use of Spanish. Their souls are screaming "¡Para!"
I used this clip as part of an ice breaker to a Puerto Rican friend that I have not seen in years. He immediately reacted exactly as mouse and mom.
Not just Puerto Ricans, I'm dominican and I can't help but yell about he's missing the fucking point. we don't "make pegao" it's a fucking by product of cooking rice
We in Brazil also cook a lot of rice and we also eat the "crust" that gets stuck in the pan, basically the same as pegao. My mother absolutely loves it, but I don't think we have a specific name for it. My family calls it "cascão". Something like "big crust"@@ninjahedgehog5

So from my understanding, these are the steps to making pegao.
Step 1. you do NOT make pegao
Step 2. YOU DO NOT MAKE PEGAO!!!

Yep it's just s byproduct of cooking rice in an aluminum pot, the taste usually depends in the type of rice dish you cooked so if you cooked some yellow rice with beans and chicken it's going to have a concentrated version of thode flavors.
Correction: Step one is: You do not MAKE pegao.
Rest is correct tho, other two steps just come after
It's one of those happy accidents in life.
Pegao is like a bread crust, but with a pot of rice instead of a loaf of bread. That's also why they say nobody tries to make pegao, it just happens.

I really love how your mom just listened when it was Mousey crying and thanking everyone for being part of her streams while she talked about the bad place she was in a few years ago. She didn't try to talk over it or anything, just listened. I really, really respect that.

I've never seen two people be more on the same page than Ironmouse and Puerto Rican mom when it comes to Pegau.

I will admit, I was the one that said " To be fair, Gordon was trying to improve on Pegao." I am white as white can be, so I had no idea what Pegao was at the time.... Forgive me... I have since learned the error of my comment and what Pegao actually is.

Yeah, basically his only real problem was calling it pegao instead of what it more closely resembles, which is apparently called calentao. They also rip on him for using butter instead of lard, because apparently heart disease is awesome, and for using a quality cast-iron pan instead of a shitty aluminum pot.
@@kaydoughlow4679 I don't know about lard but it's understandable that a lot would comment about the pan. When people, who knew what pegao actually is, they should've expected to see a pot to be used which is actually what you really need to use to get a pegao when cooking rice. But instead we saw a pan. That's when we knew that what GR's gonna cook isn't pegao like what he said he would do. That's why he got 'rip' on.
Though don't get me wrong, I still like gordon. I actually watch a lot of his cooking videos and got motivated to cook my own food than just ordering out. But let's be honest, he kinda effed up here. At the very least he tried.
@@kaydoughlow4679 you don't get pegao from a frying pan unless you really want to overcomplicate your life and risk making a mess of undercooked or charred rice--you need an aluminum pot because then you get a bunch of easy free pegao from the bottom of the pot after any batch of rice you cook in there like normal humans from planet earth do. In a pot. Rice is cooked in pots, dude.
The only difficult part is the workout of scraping it out, because the entire point is the crunchiness and concentrated flavor it gets from being stuck at the bottom and sides of the pot. You also don't need lard or butter, just olive oil.
@@Maverick2736 Is he cooking the rice or is he just refrying it? The Chinese refry rice in a wok, which is more of a pan than a pot. Gordon Ramsay is not cooking the rice, he's refrying it. Yet people are complaining that he's doing this in a cast iron skillet rather than an aluminum pot.
The constant "butter? BUTTER?" is because it's not lard. I've seen this over and over in the comments sections on this subject, and it is sited by those commenters as the superior cooking fat.
Ya know Mousey is upset when she reverts to her native language which I've affectionately dubbed "Sassy Spanish" as she only really speaks it to be adorable sassy. You should show your mom Mousey's reaction to birds and space.
As someone from an ethnicity whose dishes also regularly get misrepresented in western countries, watching two natives just rant about how this isn't right is just the best entertainment ever! I love it! Your mom is just such a cool person, how she listens, how she honestly reacts!

there is just that something about Ironmouse that makes you feel like she is an old friend really quick, that personality, just her being her, you just end up smiling! seeing actual Puerto Ricans react to her is also an interesting side to see too since for us who isn't, we can only guess but having people relate/attest to what she says gives us a perspective we never had or could have.

@@theepicslayer7sss101 As a fellow Canadian can relate, I know I say sorry a lot, and lots of my non-Canadian friends make jokes about it without even realizing or knowing that the reason I say sorry isn't because I'm Canadian, it's because of my history of being abused as a kid and trying to do anything to make it better so saying sorry whenever I did something with even the slight potential of angering my Mum became second nature to me. In addition to that I hate maple syrup (Too sticky and it doesn't even taste that good), but I've never been hurt by that stereotype personally, just something that usually catches people off guard. And before you ask yes I've had genuine and pure maple syrup before, and it is worse. But hey, at least I still have Poutine!

It might sound like sacrilege but my fav poutine is one made at a family diner in my small hometown of Rimbey AB called Rogers. It's made with Mozza Curds, shredded cheddar, basic poutine gravy and about half the fries to make room for some chicken strips. They call it a chicken supreme, I call it an orgasm on a highrim plate. (In all seriousness if you get a chance to go there, 1: Haven't been in over half a decade, the owners were pretty old then so it may be under new management now and 2: I'm not responsible for any food poisoning you may get from eating there, and although I've never gotten sick from food there the place doesn't exactly give you "Clean and Sanitary" vibes, just a heads up, as I don't wanna send you on a mission to a useless town for a poutine that might not even be worth it anymore)

im mexican and i never noticed that yeah we basically have something spicy with almost every meal. its more rare to have a meal without something spicy in it for us.
@@spikysmom8216 TBF a lot of chilli's are actually not that spicy and are used as if they were spicies. Most hot sauces are optional really.
I will say spending most of my time in Canada and the only time I've been to the Caribbean was once over 10 years ago to the Bahamas and only experience in the southern USA being Las Vegas and Disney World I can pretty confidently say I know pretty much nothing about Mexican or puerto rican food. Only thing is I don't have the confidence of a welshman to say they are the same place.

it blew my mind to hear that Puerto-Rican cuisine isn't spicy
As a mexican who has had both, I would agree mexican food usually relies more on spice with a kick, while puerto rican food is like spice to accompany a general sweetness(?). I feel alot of PR food always has a tinge of sweet to it, be it a sugar sweet, a milky sweet, or a fruit sweet with just a dash of spice.

The thing is that Connor is from the UK/Welsh, so while he's had contact with Spanish people, he's quiiite a distance away from the Caribbean, even further from Mexico, so it makes some sense that he's not super familiar with the breadth of Latino people and cultures.
This, nearly all the latino diaspora is in the Americas, and most of what Brits get taught about Spain in school comes down to "hey, you guys know that one time they tried to invade us and it hilariously backfired and that was totally what started their slide into global irrelevance? wasn't that neat?"
You're also more likely to be offered German as a language option to learn there than the one hundreds of millions of people speak across much of the Caribbean, Central and South America, so its really no wonder that there isn't much knowledge about Spanish speaking countries.
What is messed up to me is that other than a bit about India, the US(mostly well post independence) and the "Race for Africa" we were never really taught about former colonies, not even like geographically let alone historically. We did learn about our role in the slave trade, so that's something at least
And Europeans keep giving us crap for not knowing anything about them, SMH.

Yeah, I'm from the north of England and I have literally zero knowledge of Puerto Rico, I have like 0.1% knowledge of Mexican culture and that's from some small amount of food that I've had and some media stuff, even Spanish culture I have no idea because I've never been and was never taught Spanish in school, we studied German instead.
So I know so little about any of this stuff. Germany I know a bit about, I've been to Germany, France, Belgium, Cyprus and Italy so I know bits and pieces about their culture but outside of that it's just nothing but US and Japanese stuff.
