We stayed in Viseu some years ago, at a pousada that had been very sympathetically converted from, I think a former hosptial. It is a fascinating city with a multitude of architectural styles from the medieval to the ultra modern, but they all seem to work together. Writing and posting this comment only half way through so forgive me if you cover this later in the video, but anyone visiting Viseu should definitely take a look at the Museu Grão Vasco. Thank you for sharing, I will open a bottle of Dao this evening and drink a toast to Viseu and Portugal. Saúde.

My husband and I are so excited to spend at least a week in Viseu next year and really dive in to see if this is where we want to expat to. We visited Viseu about two years ago and loved it. We first parked right where you started the video. We stayed at the lovely converted hospital hotel. Our receptionist had been born there! She taught me I was definitely pronouncing Viseu wrong. 😂

Viseu is homeland of my family, which father stated my family lived in the general location for at least a thousand years. I was born in Lisbon, but my heart is with Viseu.
Another great video and wonderful city. I was in Viseu once back in 2009 and I was impressed with the beauty. I remember Grao Vasco museum near the cathedral. I don't know of his historical significance. Can't wait for 2nd video, as always you do great work!

"Beam me up Scotty". Such a beautiful city - like Lisbon, but flatter and not so busy :-). We often talk about retiring to somewhere like here but unfortunately for us kiwi's, we cant leave the country for more than six months, without losing the pension. It makes planning a retirement overseas very limiting. As usual your video was historically fascinating and always a little gem of controversial information. I wonder why the birthplace and date of Ofonso was distorted and the reason for this. Look forward to seeing Part 2 .🥝🤗

@@POVTours Ah Bless Miguel and yes we are very familiar with this website 🙂. It's the "certain criteria" that is the sticking point and generally does not apply if you just want to live in another country but must have a valid reason, ie medical, education purposes. NZ does have reciprocal arrangements with some countries, but not Portugal. Our Pension scheme is different from most countries as that it is paid from the current tax pool so is more like a benefit.

Olá olá Maria! 😀 Viseu é uma jóia, e está cada vez melhor. Nos meus tempos de criança era uma cidade pouco cuidada, com monumentos a precisar de renovação, zero turistas, mas agora está uma beleza. Mas o lugar que vai ser mostrado no próximo domingo talvez ainda seja mais interessante... Opinião controversa, mas depois verá e comentará. 😁 É difícil não ficar encantado com as cidades do norte de Portugal. Sim, falta a segunda parte de Leiria, que será publicada daqui a umas semanas, assim como a 2ª parte de Viseu. A cidade desta semana também terá 2 partes. 😉 E ainda falta o passeio à Régua, terra do meu pai. Muitos vídeos interessantes que estão para chegar (quase todos no centro/norte de Portugal). I forgot to mention that when you said that the Lusitanians were located between the rivers Tejo and Douro, I wanted to know what peoples lived South of Tejo. I was able to find out that the Turduli occupied the lands around Beja and the Celtici were around Torre de Palma.

What a treat! Like in Siena, Italy, in Viseu you breathe medieval air! Afonso Henriques is present in many of your videos, so perhaps it should be said that the name Afonso is of Visigothic origin. I wonder if the descendants of the Visigothic rulers of the Iberian Peninsula who were forced to retreat to the North by the invading Muslims in the first half of the 8th century AD, kept alive from generation to generation the strong desire to return the the lands once under their domination. I also wonder if this yearning for their past territories was a strong motivator for them and their subjects to persist for centuries in their efforts to throw out the Muslim conquerors from the Iberian Peninsula. I should perhaps spend some time to research this to see if was really that way. We speak and write today about Visigoths and Ostrogoths, but this dichotomy was introduced only in the 6th century AD by Cassiodorus, a Roman historian who lived after the fall of the Roman Empire. The spiral columns in the Cathedral of Viseu reminded me of those from the baldacchino of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. You filmed a Catholic service in one of the churches. This is the first such event I see in your videos. At 26:40, a Baptist Church! This also is the first one I see in your videos. Of course, I do not think I watched absolutely all of them. When you mentioned the attack of King Juan of Castile and how the locals survived by hiding inside the Cathedral, I thought again, like in many other occasions when I learn about such events, how Christians were so good at slaughtering each other, although they were all worshiping the same God and they were all receiving spiritual guidance from the Pope and the Catholic clergy until the Reformation in the 16th century. This culminated with the carnage of WWI, after which the use of the term Christendom ceased. Even in our time, we saw the Patriarch of Moscow blessing the invasion of Ukraine and promising the forgiveness of all sins to those Russians who go to fight against Ukraine. In the process, many Christian Ukrainians were killed. I even saw images of Ukrainian churches destroyed by Russian bombardment. Of course Afonso Henriques was born in Viseu. His name is of VISigothic origin, so he must have been born in VISeu! LOL!

We often talk about retiring to somewhere like here but unfortunately for us kiwi's, we cant leave the country for more than six months, without losing the pension. It makes planning a retirement overseas very limiting. As usual your video was historically fascinating and always a little gem of controversial information. I wonder why the birthplace and date of Ofonso was distorted and the reason for this. Look forward to seeing Part 2 .🥝🤗

@@POVTours Ah Bless Miguel and yes we are very familiar with this website 🙂. It's the "certain criteria" that is the sticking point and generally does not apply if you just want to live in another country but must have a valid reason, ie medical, education purposes. NZ does have reciprocal arrangements with some countries, but not Portugal. Our Pension scheme is different from most countries as that it is paid from the current tax pool so is more like a benefit.

Viseu é uma cidade linda, de fato! Desde que acompanho vídeos sobre Portugal, sempre me deparo com vídeos ótimos e sempre recheados de muitos elogios à cidade. Tem um brasileiro que mora em Vila Chã de Sá e trabalha em Viseu. Ele já fez várias caminhadas mostrando o centro histórico. Há algum tempo que não assisto seus vídeos... Olá olá Maria! 😀 Viseu é uma jóia, e está cada vez melhor. Nos meus tempos de criança era uma cidade pouco cuidada, com monumentos a precisar de renovação, zero turistas, mas agora está uma beleza. Mas o lugar que vai ser mostrado no próximo domingo talvez ainda seja mais interessante... Opinião controversa, mas depois verá e comentará. 😁 É difícil não ficar encantado com as cidades do norte de Portugal.
Sim, falta a segunda parte de Leiria, que será publicada daqui a umas semanas, assim como a 2ª parte de Viseu. A cidade desta semana também terá 2 partes. 😉 E ainda falta o passeio à Régua, terra do meu pai. Muitos vídeos interessantes que estão para chegar (quase todos no centro/norte de Portugal).

What a treat! Like in Siena, Italy, in Viseu you breathe medieval air! Afonso Henriques is present in many of your videos, so perhaps it should be said that the name Afonso is of Visigothic origin. I wonder if the descendants of the Visigothic rulers of the Iberian Peninsula who were forced to retreat to the North by the invading Muslims in the first half of the 8th century AD, kept alive from generation to generation the strong desire to return the the lands once under their domination. I also wonder if this yearning for their past territories was a strong motivator for them and their subjects to persist for centuries in their efforts to throw out the Muslim conquerors from the Iberian Peninsula. I should perhaps spend some time to research this to see if was really that way. We speak and write today about Visigoths and Ostrogoths, but this dichotomy was introduced only in the 6th century AD by Cassiodorus, a Roman historian who lived after the fall of the Roman Empire. The spiral columns in the Cathedral of Viseu reminded me of those from the baldacchino of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. You filmed a Catholic service in one of the churches. This is the first such event I see in your videos. At 26:40, a Baptist Church! This also is the first one I see in your videos. Of course, I do not think I watched absolutely all of them. When you mentioned the attack of King Juan of Castile and how the locals survived by hiding inside the Cathedral, I thought again, like in many other occasions when I learn about such events, how Christians were so good at slaughtering each other, although they were all worshiping the same God and they were all receiving spiritual guidance from the Pope and the Catholic clergy until the Reformation in the 16th century. This culminated with the carnage of WWI, after which the use of the term Christendom ceased. Even in our time, we saw the Patriarch of Moscow blessing the invasion of Ukraine and promising the forgiveness of all sins to those Russians who go to fight against Ukraine. In the process, many Christian Ukrainians were killed. I even saw images of Ukrainian churches destroyed by Russian bombardment. Of course Afonso Henriques was born in Viseu. His name is of VISigothic origin, so he must have been born in VISeu! LOL!

Je savais que Viseu est une ville chargée d histoire pour l indépendance du Portugal. L indépendance du Portugal est très ancienne même plus ancienne que le Portugal ! Pour les Romains c était un terre lointaine très lointaine et d une certaine façon déjà indépendante! Les outils pour travailler la terre pour construire étaient déjà différents et se distinguaient du reste de la Peninsule et sont à l origine d une particularité qui fera le Portugal ! Oui Viseu est à très important dans l histoire de l Indépendance du Portugal ! Des vidéos sur le Portugal obligent à parler de Viseu
