"The Latin boom was so, I guess surreal. What is Latin boom? Boom for me is...I grew up with it, it's my music, it's what I am made of. I swear it was not my intention when I was working on a crossover. I was really enjoying day by day my work, and because of it cause and effect created this explosion. It was the need to talk about my culture, that's the truth, but it got a little bit out of hand I think. It's all about music."

RICKY MARTIN GOES BACK TO HIS ROOTS
After a two year break from showbiz, Ricky Martin has released a new album 'Almas del Silencio' ('Souls of Silence').
The album which was released on May 20 is Martin's first Spanish recording since his 1998 Grammy-Award- winning album, 'Vuelve.'
The 31-year-old native of Puerto Rico said that he had to take a break from his exhausting schedule but now he is back. On Wednesday he greeted fans and signed CDs at the Virgin Megastore in New York City's Times Square.
Martin is perhaps best known for his crossover hit 'Livin' la Vida Loca.' That song propelled Martin to international fame -- it spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Martin was in the midst of recording the new album in English when he suddenly decided to start over in Spanish. His decision was initially not well received but Martin persisted and as he told APTN he got to "go back to his roots."
When asked how he felt about his initial crossover success and the Latin music frenzy that followed, Ricky told APTN that he "hated the Latin boom" and that he never had any intention of jump starting what became known as "the Latin boom."
'Almas del Silencio' is more introspective than his last album and is perhaps reflective of the time Martin has taken off to ponder his fame and fortune.
His next English album has already been recorded and Martin hopes to release it in March 2004.
