    The stops and gyms are not computer generated. These were user submitted spots, curated by Niantic, during the early times of Ingress. What Niantic did was reuse those portals for Pokémon Go.

      hmm, I should have remembered the locations were similar from my brief time trying Ingress. Sounds like it uses the same database but doesn't add locations that are closer than a certain distance apart, which is why it's different. I guess there's just a really strange bias towards churches and Christian groups for some reason.

      Well, Ingress portal submissions were told to be of "cultural significance", such as landmarks, monuments, etc. So, coming from that database, its not all that surprising that there are a lot of churches used as points of interest.

      I think I also heard that houses of worship were almost always approved since it tied in with the lore of Ingress. I never played it so I can't be sure.
