With your walks around this part of Hampshire you’re following in the footsteps of some of my ancestors. In the last quarter of their lives, my 2xgreat grandparents farmed at North End Farm in Droxford. They’re now buried in the churchyard opposite the church door. A lovely walk. Thank you.
Back my younger days with this one Dave. Droxford has memories for me. I was born not too far away at Hambledon back in 1941. I would have passed through that station on my way to Fareham and then on to Gosport. I can remember very few points in Droxford and certainly never did that beautiful walk you took us on. By 1945/6 I was living in Warnford at Peak farm, so to get the train, I would have been taken to West Meon. There were some lovely views across the valley and I’ll never get tired of looking at the river Meon.
Hi Dave and Logan. I have just found your channel over the weekend and been watching a fair few episodes especially the places I’ve been to as well. I live in Hampshire and where we have a dog, tend to try and spend more time locally to find out what’s right on our doorstep. I love the Meon Trail. Was on it from Wickham to Soberton Heath today. We’ve parked up in Droxford before, was a few years back, had a Sunday lunch at the Baker’s Arms then went for a walk up to the Shoe Inn at Exton. It’s a nightmare to park we found on other visits by car so thinking of walking there again, for the lovely food and the fresh loaves of bread they sell! What a find that was! We ended up walking through a field of cows just past the Church to get back on the trail but didn’t know or see the path you took just past the Baker’s Arms that leads past the old mill. Will this take us to the old railway line so we can get back to Exton without having to disturb the cows who were all congregating at the gate just past the church. It was ok and they were fine but just wondering if this other path will cut that bit out, plus it’s a new route for me. Thank you for posting your walks. If you go to the Facebook Page "Dave's Countryside Walks" and in the "search bar" type in "Droxford", it will bring up my original post in 2020 which has a number of photos - one of which is a picture of the route that I took on an OS map. There is a public footpath from the pub to the church & then across a field to the old railway line. I cannot remember if there were cows in the field when we did our walk - but I guess that it could be a field used for livestock. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching.
Another great video! When I started my railway career in England, I worked with a loco driver who drove the last train over the Meon Valley line. The strange plant is a New Flax. They grow all over the place down here and can get huge. The fibrous leaves can be pulled into threads and were used for making clothes and bags etc. Loving the old buildings, the oldest building in NZ was built in 1822. Brand new compared to the old country.
Dave, I liked the inside views of the church with it's interesting history. That telephone booth mini library ... what a wonderful idea... Liked the crystal clear river Meon ... nice to see Logan venturing into it.Very interesting to know about Churchill’s war time meeting place in a cutting near Droxford station with other Allied chiefs. By the way that large shrub you saw was a Yucca. Enjoyed your video ...
Dave, The yucca in your film looks like a variety known as “Adam’s Needle”. I have one in my garden and it’s lovely, when it decides to bloom (which isn’t always annually). The are a number in nearby gardens including next door to me which is flowering now - in December!. Thanks for a lovely video - makes me long for sunnier days.
You've inspired a future trip from Canada to this sanctuary...nature, walking trails, pristine waters and soothing sounds, blackberries, old churches & hamlets, history, and a cute dog to catch my attention...what more can one asks for lol. Great job 👍😁...appreciate your video.
Hi Dave I found what appears to be an old boundary stone in fawley enclose on the south side near Holbury it reads C something S cant make out the 2nd letter...any ideas?
I came across what looked like a boundary stone - under a stile -near there (possibly the same one as the one that you are taling about?) on my Dibden walk (ua-cam.com/video/dQrCWd20rB0/v-deo.html) - whizz through to about 20 mins. It had CSS on it - not sure what the initials actually stand for though I am afraid. The "C" might stand for the Cadland Estate? If I recall correctly, the boundary stone didn't appear on either a current OS map or indeed any of the older ones - which is unusual.
