Thank you for sharing, it looks like you made a very cost effective way to make parabolic reflectors! I'm fascinated with your tracking system on the trailer plan, and I am thinking of using something similar to power an absorption chiller to cool my home in the desert. It is insane here in Arizona that we are using grid (or fossil fuel) energy for cooling! Keep up the great play/"work", always stay safe from those sun beams et. al.!
Amazing. I wonder if you could use a similar setup using scrap mylar as a mold. Just pull a vacumn on it, then layer it with fiberglass and resin, then lay new mylar on top of the resin. Just keep the vacumn on it until it dries, and it seems you would end up with a permanent parabolic mirror. Probably things I'm not considering, but just an idea.
Live your work! Are you familiar with plastic pyrolysis? Someone needs to make a plant powered by a fresnel lense or parabolic mirrors. If anyone can do it you can! It's pretty simple compared to what your capable of and you already have the lenses. Turning mixed plastic garbage into fuel only using the sun would be incredible!

Hi Tom, Thank you for the nice comment. The dual axis will be required more in the summer than winter but rear legs of the easel stands will have rollers and one screw drive to adjust them. May be complex or very simple, not sure yet as I have not gotten that far. I am guessing the power may be better during the summer for an AM - PM time period vs 12 noon as the beams would be a bit linear to the target when the sun is directly overhead.
A few decades ago I was working on a 2 axis tracking system that worked only with the magnified heat of the sun falling onto bi-metal springs, expanding in the heat until aligned with the sun in each direction again.
Apologies for the delayed comment, but as I explore solar power I can't help but wonder if perhaps you can apply a shellac coating to the surface of the mylar to create a rigid form which would then no longer need the vacuum interface to retain its focal point? Perhaps you can even create the first form with shellac on the top surface, then use it as a mold for other reflectors, where the shellac is applied to the bottom surface then allowed to dry? I can see this working on a tower with a spyglass that follows the Sun and will funnel the Suns Rays to a centerpoint within the machine; then at the base 360° It will have the ability to direct that energy any which way... A Death Ray. It's either that or a better inexpensive solution will be to have the "Death Ray" fixed on the ground... Then directing that energy to a tower to shot a target from a very high elevation or from the ground to the heavens - as the beam of energy only has to be the size of a sowing needle to take out a fighter jet. Because I've also seen your Horizontal Death Ray with the plastic liner on top of the 4 pillars made of 2x4's and the water bead right above it... And was shocked when I witnessed the glass bottles melt.

Dan, I love the work you do. With that said have you ever attempted to run NITS calibrated sensors to get a actual power output reading on your projects? Im tired of all the neigh sayers scuttling anything non-standard as infinite energy devices.
I'm using a pressure sensor and peristaltic pump to maintain constant pressure it is not so complicated and uses very little power. Also I noticed that when the mirrors are air tight the heat from the sun makes the pressure vary and so the focal length also. With this system the focal length always stays the same.
Not yet. I was planning to make a video about it but never took the time to do it. It is integrated to a custom dual axis solar tracker. The pressure management system in itself is really simple. If the pressure goes above the set pressure plus hysteresis it makes the pump go one way to lower the pressure until it reaches the set pressure. If the pressure goes below the set pressure minus hysteresis it makes the pump go the other way to raise the pressure until it reaches the set pressure. The pump is controlled with a H-bridge. It is too early in the year (winter in the north hemisphere) for me to demonstrate the entire system on video but I could do it in a couple of months.

While watching something burning, as a result of the heat, is impressive and dramatic, I would much rather see this put to a practical use. Maybe the heat could be used to generate steam to drive an electric generator or operate similarly to the large commercial systems that use mirrors to beam the sun to the top of a tower?
Aged for sure. When I would upload a video "back then" I would be critical on how I looked on camera. Now, I am like damn, I looked like a young person. Turned 50 years old this year so after going to my 30th class reunion 2 years ago I am holding up to most of my peers. Why dont you use scrap mirrors, it should be cheap and last forever? You can glue bunch of little mirrors 20x20cm on small steel plates with holders on them which could be aligned by hand to center focal point and than instantly welded to the steel construction of parabolic mirror. Frame could consist of 25 mirrors 20x20cm to get 1sqm parabolic reflector. I will paste here the text I posted on another video about green energy that could use those reflectors with sand as material for heat storage. Ok I think we could buy old steel tank from truck at scrap yard 3-4000 liter, put it vertically fill it with sand, molten salt or whatever stores huge amount of heat. We make one window 30x30cm with heat resistant glass, vacuum inside and coated one way heat transfer, similar like vacuum tubes for water heating collector. Behind its black coated copper that transfers heat received from window to material (maybe molten material would be good to assure good contact with copper ribs). Now we make alot of mirrors that would be guided with motors to reflect huge amount of heat through that window and heat material up to 400-500*C We can also put 4 mirrors at window at 30* to collect light that would otherwise not hit the window and size receiving are up to 1m.🔳 We can then extract heat through copper tubing inside tank pushing water or some other fluid through them, even connect steam turbine to produce electricity but am not sure how much of energy can such tank store.. If that kind of tank could store big amounts of heat we could use it for making electricity through steam turbine during summer hot days and use it as battery during winter nights to heat home and make electricity. Am not sure if about 50sqm of mirrors would be enough to make such amounts of heat during winter but its cheap and very earth pollution saving project. Thanks for making me think of this idea and please everyone who have some recommendations or ideas to add something..
Instead of a vacuum pump, have you tried partly filling the evacuated space with water and then letting gravity create the vacuum by pulling the water through a tube to a lower place.
Why couldn't you put spray glue on your backing before you vacuum the mylar and then once it pulls the mylar back you could stick it to the spray glue to hold it in place and in shape forever
You don't think the plans are already in process??? What about the seawater purification plants in CA..The only reason its not being done on a larger scale is that its not cheap enough on the corporate scale

If you use gold colored mylar and paint the trailer gold too and give it a fancy name, then humpty trumpty wont mind you testing it out on him as his new hair dryer, because wind based hair/gold electroplated steel wool drying keeps causing insult to injury.

@@iloveamerica1966 That is really not how solar math works; a system is energy per hour and a house needs 3kw per hour so 24 sq meters of 20% efficency panels or 12 panels of 2×1 meters, to get a full fucking 30kws per 10 sunlight hour period.
I'm practicing gem faceting. Melt some different minerals into a cool concoction so I can practice cutting. Corundum. Melt some corundum. You know, the stuff sapphires and rubies are made of. Al2O3 I believe. Aluminum oxide or alumina.
We know how this works, can't we make something practical that can be used for energy production? Let's build this in a safe insulated housing with a boiler and a "Green Steem" engine and produce hot water, distilled water and electricity.
Jack the only thing I can see is heating a water tank and use steam energy to run a generator but then I'm not as up on these things as Dan is. I once asked Dan about a no electricity way to generate ice or colder temps than a zeer pot could (50 degrees F) and he said he found a way but would not tell me what that way was which I found really suspect. . Perhaps he could use a giant Peltier device with that amount of heat to do it.
You could probably do _something_ with it in that capacity: 3,000 watt-hours is just over 10,000 BTUs per hour, if you could manage a 100% efficient conversion to thermal energy. Even assuming a 50% loss, that's still enough energy to raise the temperature of about 2 gallons of water to more than 300 degrees Fahrenheit over that hour. Could you do something _practical_ with it? That's another question altogether.
PhycoKrusk - well people already do something practical with way less than that say 150 F. using passive solar heating systems. They can heat entire houses with them and use them to provide hot water with showers.. and a ram pump circulation system that carries the water up hill - no electricity needed at all. There's tons of ways to do Everything low tech but sometimes we need some electricity for low wattage low voltage electronics. If we could at least charge battery banks with such devices that would help out a lot. Solar is expensive.
??? I mentioned an RV fridge = absorption refrigeration, other than a cold front, there really is no other options because the cooling process is always a heat pump. The best method is a solar panel to a small electric ice chest. I do not recall any secret cooling devices up my sleeve. If I had it, I would have used it last summer. I was working on the RV fridge _ concentrated sunlight but realized it was not a safe project to make a video on as there was a large risk for the water separator to violently rupture.
+smasimulationshop Pretty negligibly tho i'd expect, i wouldn't expect it to change the focus. The curve will be pretty well "locked in" as the foam sets.
Foam does not hold its shape against weak objects, it bulges and expands to however it feels like. Place foam spray in a beer bottle uncapped or it will explode when you break the glass, once solid, break the glass, the final result is something that sort of looks like a bottle with lumps all over it.

Lovely build. For an easy Sun tracker just use cross-wired electric motors, each powered by a small solar panel, they automatically face the Sun.

I wish that could be used for heating during winter. It would be more useful than cooking during summer IMO.

Could you set this up to power a steam engine? Would be very nice to see how close this setup would come compared to an industry standard solar array.
It would require constant supervision. Robotics would greatly aid the supervisor and would be essential for a large engine generator.

We make one window 30x30cm with heat resistant glass, vacuum inside and coated one way heat transfer, similar like vacuum tubes for water heating collector.
Behind its black coated copper that transfers heat received from window to material (maybe molten material would be good to assure good contact with copper ribs).
Now we make alot of mirrors that would be guided with motors to reflect huge amount of heat through that window and heat material up to 400-500*C
We can also put 4 mirrors at window at 30* to collect light that would otherwise not hit the window and size receiving are up to 1m.🔳
We can then extract heat through copper tubing inside tank pushing water or some other fluid through them, even connect steam turbine to produce electricity but am not sure how much of energy can such tank store..
If that kind of tank could store big amounts of heat we could use it for making electricity through steam turbine during summer hot days and use it as battery during winter nights to heat home and make electricity.
Am not sure if about 50sqm of mirrors would be enough to make such amounts of heat during winter but its cheap and very earth pollution saving project.

Instead of a vacuum pump, have you tried partly filling the evacuated space with water and then letting gravity create the vacuum by pulling the water through a tube to a lower place.

Why couldn't you put spray glue on your backing before you vacuum the mylar and then once it pulls the mylar back you could stick it to the spray glue to hold it in place and in shape forever

I have 3 larger steam engines. I need the larger footprint and thermal watts to get the sustained pressure required.

If you use gold colored mylar and paint the trailer gold too and give it a fancy name, then humpty trumpty wont mind you testing it out on him as his new hair dryer, because wind based hair/gold electroplated steel wool drying keeps causing insult to injury.

Interesting. Could be a cheap way to collect more solar energy to a focal point for high efficiency PV or water heating! Does anyone know the approximate reflectivity efficiency of the mylar? Also, is there a more simple physical system that might be easier than a vacuum to create the concave?
Why not spread some glue inside the dish so when you vacuum it.. it glues it in that position.. or I guess the dish is not a good shape..

The sun gives out 625 watts per sq meter, those three pads of 1m2 are less than three full kilowatts per hour duration.
It would be kilowatts regardless of duration since kilowatts is just power or energy per unit of time.

That is really not how solar math works; a system is energy per hour and a house needs 3kw per hour so 24 sq meters of 20% efficency panels or 12 panels of 2×1 meters, to get a full fucking 30kws per 10 sunlight hour period.

You could get only 1 Kilowatt electricity at most, or 0.3 Kilowatt averaged to whole day.

We know how this works, can't we make something practical that can be used for energy production? Let's build this in a safe insulated housing with a boiler and a "Green Steem" engine and produce hot water, distilled water and electricity.
Jack the only thing I can see is heating a water tank and use steam energy to run a generator but then I'm not as up on these things as Dan is. I once asked Dan about a no electricity way to generate ice or colder temps than a zeer pot could (50 degrees F) and he said he found a way but would not tell me what that way was which I found really suspect. . Perhaps he could use a giant Peltier device with that amount of heat to do it.

You could probably do _something_ with it in that capacity: 3,000 watt-hours is just over 10,000 BTUs per hour, if you could manage a 100% efficient conversion to thermal energy. Even assuming a 50% loss, that's still enough energy to raise the temperature of about 2 gallons of water to more than 300 degrees Fahrenheit over that hour.
Could you do something _practical_ with it? That's another question altogether.
PhycoKrusk - well people already do something practical with way less than that say 150 F. using passive solar heating systems. They can heat entire houses with them and use them to provide hot water with showers.. and a ram pump circulation system that carries the water up hill - no electricity needed at all. There's tons of ways to do Everything low tech but sometimes we need some electricity for low wattage low voltage electronics. If we could at least charge battery banks with such devices that would help out a lot. Solar is expensive.
??? I mentioned an RV fridge = absorption refrigeration, other than a cold front, there really is no other options because the cooling process is always a heat pump. The best method is a solar panel to a small electric ice chest. I do not recall any secret cooling devices up my sleeve. If I had it, I would have used it last summer.
I was working on the RV fridge _ concentrated sunlight but realized it was not a safe project to make a video on as there was a large risk for the water separator to violently rupture.

+smasimulationshop Pretty negligibly tho i'd expect, i wouldn't expect it to change the focus. The curve will be pretty well "locked in" as the foam sets.
Does not work.
Foam does not hold its shape against weak objects, it bulges and expands to however it feels like. Place foam spray in a beer bottle uncapped or it will explode when you break the glass, once solid, break the glass, the final result is something that sort of looks like a bottle with lumps all over it.
