    That's why you should pet cats when they're little kittens so they get used to it and they're not aggressive while eating when they're fully grown.

      Yes, but you can teach a young cat to get used to petting while it's eating so it's not aggressive when it's an adult but you can't teach an adult cat from aggressive eating, then you just have to let it be as it is.

      @@santhomjoseph9412 cats do that when they think there isn’t enough resources for it. It’s in its nature to do that but if you teach the kitten that there is resources and that they don’t really need to do that then they get the picture. But one things for sure there is a lot of other reasons they act up like that. That’s just one thing it could be. Like they might be stressed so that’s why they start getting aggressive like that. Gotta let the cat know you aren’t going to harm it and let it trust you.

      When a cat feels insecure about food, like she doesn't get enough to eat or has to fight to get food, she will grow when you take her food away. That's self-defense. In fact, when you see a cat gets defensive easily, it is usually an indication that it feels the need to defend itself. I had 5 cats one time, 3 of which died of old age. They never fought for their food because they knew they would all get enough food to eat!

      I find the best technique is to grab the kitten by the scruff of the neck and forcibly hold it down so that it is unable to move, or eat. Keep it in this position until it offers no resistance and becomes completely still. Then let it eat. If it gets possessive again, do the same. I held a kitten in place for 20mins once. It's all about breaking the animal's will.
      The kitten will soon come to understand that it should not behave that way with you.

    I have fostered feral kittens for a long time. A very good way
    of showing it you don't want its food is petting and stroking the

    food aggressive at an older age. Its very hard to correct.

      I do wonder though, I honestly dont remember any of my kittens doing this to me, but I did have them behaving like this among them selves, or older cats doing this to kittens. why does this happen? I mean its not like there isnt enough food, and the grown ups dont mind kittens as long as they are like 10-20cm away from their head. And again not all of them do this. At my family home the current ''álpha male'' gets really annoyed with this, he isnt agressive though, but he does just walk away from the food and the other cats.

    • @Melisande777
      @Melisande777 8 років тому +16

      A lot of kittens I rescued were lost kittens or feral kittens. They were starving and had anemia (meaning low on blood) from all the fleas. When I gave them food they would feel the need to fight for it like they did in the wild. Biting, growling and even swiping as they would stuff their face in goop. This is called Food Aggression and I don't think it is as common as it is in dogs. But it is not good behavior for adoption. Children and other animals would be put at risk. So it is best to do this. It shows you are not interested in his food. Just him.

      I imagine some kittens could realize in time that there food is not going anywhere. But that is a risk I could not take when raising for adoption. I need to make sure they can get the best home they can get. This includes making sure they are not having food aggressive issues. All my kitties got great homes (one being with me) and they learned pretty quick I was not going to take their food from them. They were all loving and I always cried when they got their forever homes. I would love to start fostering again.

    Had a cat named brutus--when we brought him home at like 5 weeks old--someone in the hosue dropped a chicken wing and the little monster flew after it and chomped on it and growled.We picked up the wing with him attached and growiling at it.he turned out to be the friendliest cat--yet he was in the kitchen everyday of his life during dinner--when we grilled or cooked meats--we always cooked him some--he also loved boiled shrimp.We picked him up a few times when he was young like the lady did by the scruff of his neck so he would not become combative over food.he would just stay in the kitchen silently hounding you like a small dog till he got something.He would also sit in an empty chair at the table.you had to be careful because he grew into a big cat and could stand on his hind legs and reach the counter or table to knock food to himself.

They don't need to be trained to cut this habbit out, eventually they realize there's always enough food and won't care. I can even take food out of their bowl and they will just be like that's fine and continue. Idk where people got the idea from that this was some bad habit that needs to be forced out of the kitten. And most people are saying that without saying how they managed to train their cat to stop.

    I had a cat named Tobasco when I was younger and yes that was his real name lol. He was extremely aggressive with his food and my dad and I laughed it off too.. fast forward several months his aggression got so bad when it came to food he attacked my face and scratched one of my eyeballs. We weren't abusive and we never teased him, all of sudden he just started attacking us when it was time for him to eat. I'd like to say we eventually had a solution but we didn't, we would feed him in the bathroom with the door closed until he was done because sometimes he would follow us after laying his food down and would literally jump all over our legs biting and scratching. I'm not saying everyone's cat will be like this but please if your kitten has a food aggression stop it in it's tracks, don't laugh it off. Because you never want it to get so bad that you consider getting rid of them.. I gotta give it to Tobasco though, he lived for almost 16 years and even in his old age he still had an attitude during feeding lol

      No. It is just a necesarry behavior for animals. If people would stop trying to pick this apart, they‘d learn that it is for their own good to learn to fight for what‘s theirs. I‘ve had kittens behaving like this, and they grew out of it naturally. Yes, there are behaviors you need to correct, but a kitten? That‘s like trying to get a kid not to cry when you take his food out of his hands. A passive newborn rarely make it to adulthood. So instead of seeing this as an aggression, know that it is a sign of a healthy animal. Sadly people see pets as some kind of decoration, solely to please themselves.

      itsmegp46 They aren't dogs food aggression is not a problem with cats. Kittens do that usually if they are the runts or had to fight liter mates for a nipple so they're scared their food will be taken away, as they get older it always stops when they see noone is going to take their food.
