  • Some changes I’m making to speed up my worm bin migration harvest method so I can create natural organic fertilizer for my garden in the form of worm castings quicker!
    In this video we'll find out how many red wiggler compost worms have migrated out of the worm castings so far & see how many are living it up in the feeding zone! We'll also install a new barrier, get a close up of a worm cocoon or egg & let you decide on how we'll restart this worm bin...be sure to let me know in the comments what you think!!
    Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 4 worm composting bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 4 playlists following each worm bin. If you haven't started yet, get started now and vermicompost with me!🪱🪱🪱 Visit my Channel at / @vermicompost
    Happy Vermicomposting Everyone!!!🪱🪱🪱

    I've started using an old quart-sized yogurt container with 1/2"ish holes all around. I puree my food scraps and layer it in with shredded cardboard. Takes about 3 weeks to get 95% of the worms out, changing the containers once a week. The container allows me to place it in the center of the bin. It's easy for all worms to make the centerally located food.

    Hi Patrick! I don’t think there’s a wrong way to do the migration. I prefer to make the feed zone small which allows me to thin/spread out the castings area as much as possible so it dries down quicker. I also will harvest the drying down side as much as I can as it goes along - so I have less castings spread thinner to dry down even faster. I can turn the bin over (total bedding refresh ) faster this way. All that said I’m quite interested in how your expanding feed zone and smaller every time castings harvest area works out! I’m up for learning new ways to worm wrangle! ❤🪱

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  26 днів тому +1

      That is a great point, harvesting the top and spreading the rest out thinner will help to dry them. I may try a combo of both, harvest the top and move it over just a little to allow for a thinner drying area. I love learning new tricks as well!! Thanks so much for watching Jayne!!🪱🪱🪱

    I've never had much luck with migration in small totes. I tend to use a bait cup to collect and move on the worms and top harvest the castings over time instead.
    I hope you can make this work and then I'll follow along and give it a try. Cheers!

      I think I've had similar experiences. I've used bait cups to take worms out to populate my Urban Worm Bag and to send to friends but I'm hoping I can get a huge mass of them in this feeding zone all at once...I have a feeling if I had checked on it on day 5, I would have seen a big difference from this day 15 situation. I just have to be diligent and get in here again on day 5-7!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    I was already reaching for the keyboard when you started into the square area topic... but you recovered before I could type anything. Haha!! :) Migration is looking pretty good. I like the idea of continuously expanding the size fo the feeding zone. Eventually the wormies will get wise to where the food is getting replenished....

    You should be able to bait out your worms within 2-4 days. Much more than that and the bulk of the party will start moving off back to the bottom to chill out again. If you wanted to remove the worms find perforated cardboard the kind used to wrap glass or some kind of paper that you can pour some pureed pumpkin into it. The worms will flock over to it and then you can remove the vast majority of your worms. Give it a try sometime if you havent and see if you like it.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Місяць тому

      That is a great idea to capture them easily in the feeding zone!! I think you're right...I bet there were a ton of worms in my feeding zone at the 4 day mark & then they just went back to the castings side to hang out...I'll be checking on them much sooner this time!! Thanks so much for watching & passing on your technique!!🪱🪱🪱

    Ingenious way to harvest castings and start a new bed at the same time. I would just keep enlarging the feeding zone, harvest off the top. Good thought not to cover the harvest side, allow it to get drier and the worms will migrate for the added moisture as well.. COOL!!! I love things that are different.
    Stay Well!!!

    Patrick, the worms didn't get the memo! How about a bait cup in the middle? With such a tiny system, every worm would forage right past the bait cup, so if you make it tempting enough I'm sure it will be successful.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Місяць тому +2

      😂 I think they ate the memo and then went back into the castings!! 15 days was way too long to go between re-feedings in the migration zone! We'll be going on another road trip in a bit and they'll be getting daily feedings of car snacks😁 I've used bait cups in here and they worked well when I checked on them often and pulled the worms out...i just need to be diligent in keeping their food refreshed!! Thanks so much for watching Sandra!!🪱🪱🪱

    Another vote to increase the migration area each feeding. It seems that it will only take a few more weeks as you harvest and you’re building it up as you go to keep the volume and production of castings relatively high.

    רציתי לשאול אותך שאלה.
    האם חייבים להכניס קרטון גרוס או שאפשר לשים גם חתיכות גסות (לקרוע ביד את הקרטון).
    ואיזה כמות לשים?
    לרוב אני משתדל לשים כמה שיותר קטנים ולא הרבה אני מוסיף לרוב קומפוסט כמעט מוכן לוקח להם זמן עד שהם מסיימים איתו. ויש לי עוד חווה שאיתה אני שם קרטון וירקות ופירות והיא מוכנה הרבה יותר מהר.
    לכן יש לי עוד שאתה מה הדרך הטובה יותר להכין את ההומוס הכי טוב לאדמה? מודה לך מראש.

      המון שאלות נהדרות! אני אוהב להעביר את הקרטון שלי דרך מגרסת נייר בגזרה של 12 גיליונות כדי שיהיה קטן ככל האפשר. אבל אם תקרע את הקרטון לחתיכות זעירות ביד, זה יהיה בסדר גם עבור פח התולעים. קרטון נוטה להתפרק מהר יותר מנייר או עלים מניסיוני. אני אוהב לעשות אדמה עם יציקות התולעים שלי על ידי שימוש ב-20% יציקות תולעים 60% טחב או קוקוס קוקוס ו-20% ורמיקוליט או פריליט. זה עובד ממש טוב עבור סוג האקלים שלי כאן בטמפה, פלורידה ארה"ב. אני מקווה שזה עוזר!! כל כך טוב לשמוע ממך! תודה רבה שצפיתם!!🪱🪱🪱

    I heard you mention mites is that bad?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  5 днів тому +1

      The kind of mites that are in worm bins are not bad at all!! They only feed on dead or decaying mater so they help the worm shred or tear up the food and bedding. I big mite bloom in population when you previously only had a few could mean a worm bin that is being overfeed or running slightly more acidic...which is usually caused by overfeeding. Once the castings go in the garden, any mites that might be left will seek out other dead organic material or will most likely die, but will not harm your plants. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Another option would be to dump the contents into a smaller grow bag, let it dry a bit, then sift out the worms to restart the tiny bin. Good luck with whichever way you go. I will be watching 🙂🪱🪱🪱

    Yep I think it is worth the time to try and migrate to a larger area with skimming off the top of the finished side.😀👍🏼🪱

      👍 Awesome! I was hoping the experts would weigh in & choose the way I wanted to do it! If only this bin was the size of Blue!!! Thanks so much for watching Ann!!🪱🪱🪱
