I've always found that when I'm feeling really shitty and depressed, sad stuff actually makes me feel better, not worse. I guess because you can relate to it deeply and maybe don't feel so alone. Like if I'm feeling depressed, the last thing I want to do is listen to "happy" music or watch some upbeat comedy movie. But maybe that's just me.

True story: I have never been really emotional about a song but I heard this a little before my grandad passed away. He was one of my heroes. This tune always reminds me of him. 6 months after his passing I went to a radiohead concert and I never thought they would play this. They did and I was smiling sobbing and singing all at the same time. Never forget that. Ever

This song is very stoic I think. It forces me to look my worst fears and dreads straight into the eyes. Forces you to look straight into the deep pitch black abyss or something. And that feels really scary. But in the end, it liberates you. The most perfect day I've ever seen . Acknowledging your fears and the inevitability of death makes you feel alive, puts things into perspective and basically, just makes you grateful for being alive.
I tried to show this song to my gf when it was released and she couldn't handle the oppressive dread it made her feel. Asked me to turn it off. This song is genius.
She's not the only one, it's common with people who have a hard time dealing with "certain emotions". Personnaly i find it soothing, even when depressed
I always say this - if you think radiohead is depressing its because the music and energy it conjures is so powerful and cleansing that if you have any inclining of denial or ego, then you will immediately see yourself in it. On the other hand if you are ready for its gateway and transformation, it makes you free and real again which is the nearest to happiness you can get.

I think this song especially is undeniably an emotionally pulverizing listen. It’s just two short verses and a droning syncopated piano rhythm but the entire package leaves you feeling an awkward mix of dread, awkward sadness and serenity in a way that only master artists like Radiohead are capable of. I always rejected the argument that Radiohead is “depressing” but it surely has some moments that are soul crushing and I suppose to a person with a depressive state of mind, it becomes relatable and therefore comforting because it ends the feeling of isolation from all others since you feel at least this amazing musician clearly can understand what you feel maybe far better than yourself, and that’s a comforting thought which is why depressed ppl say Radiohead is NOT depressing ironically lol. Their songs are sad now and then, but the effect varies from depressing to uplifting depending on the mental state of the listener.

Even if you haven't watched the Vox video (I have watched it as well), you can tell that the song's rhythm is actually twice of the piano's. Near the end of this video, using headphones/headsets, you can hear the metronome ticking at twice the speed of the piano's rhythm. So for me, this song's actually energetic, and it made this song could actually fit for people with depression by its energetic rhythm. You can have the opposite effect, the calming effect as well, only by listening to the silence between the piano notes or to the voices of the piano notes. All in all, this song is rich in its capability to induce a wide range of emotions, from depression to manic.
I don’t think I can ever hear this song like other people hear it. Vox Earworm already talked about this, but the piano’s rhythm is an auditorial illusion, so there’s something hiding in plain sight/sound. The eighth notes in the piano are in syncopation, which means they disturb the music’s regular flow. The song itself is in 4/4 key, which is normal enough, but the time that the eighth notes are played in is off. Despite what you might think, Thom is playing on the up beat of the eighth note instead of the down beat. (And yeah, it sounds like a quarter note, but the tempo is just slower.) This literally goes against everything our body tells us when it comes to rhythm and timing. That’s why he sometimes has issues when performing it live, and why it takes him some time to get a hold on the beat. He’s going against his brain, which is either a really amazing metaphor for mental illness or I don’t even know what. So when it’s performed live, people bob their heads to the wrong thing. They focus on the noise instead of the silence in between, and trying to figure it out is extremely difficult. It causes me an extreme amount of distress to try and pull apart the pieces, and I psych myself out so much that I start to panic. The off-right sound of the piano messes with my head. So it’s not calming for me. It’s literally the exact opposite, if anything. I wish I could hear it like other people.

Another way of thinking of it is that the piano DOES start by playing standard 4/4, and over time, another (syncopated) rhythm creeps in and ends up replacing/dominating the simpler one. So it's like an ethereal shift between rhythms over the song - just as the lyrics seem to speak of the shift between life and death.
Sadly I never heard the song before watching the Vox video so I'll never know how I would have heard it without that being explained (spoilt, if you will).
Which is odd, because it's not identified that way by title or description. I have the album version of this song on my PC, but not on my phone (hence listening to it on youtube) but halfway in I'm waiting for the percussion and bass and.... I'm still waiting, lol. I don't understand how this is such a good song. There is nothing to this song, just a few notes over and over. Why is it not boring and repetitive? Radiohead are masters at crafting an entire song from what seems like musical scraps.

Another way of thinking of it is that the piano DOES start by playing standard 4/4, and over time, another (syncopated) rhythm creeps in and ends up replacing/dominating the simpler one. So it's like an ethereal shift between rhythms over the song - just as the lyrics seem to speak of the shift between life and death.

I think it's from Thom's solo at the basement session in 2005. You can search the video of that on youtube they just released it a few days ago.
This appeared nearly a year before In Rainbows, it was said that it was gonna be part of a future album but In Rainbows was no mentioned at all, I remember it was referred as ''nude'' version.

I don't understand how this is such a good song. There is nothing to this song, just a few notes over and over. Why is it not boring and repetitive? Radiohead are masters at crafting an entire song from what seems like musical scraps.
