Dr. Lapak - I've read the late 70's interview with the designer and stuff with his family and colleagues. He was busy on other projects at the time so couldn't start when they wanted him to. He had a bluntness and shyness which made people take against him. His actual designs show that when focused on the project he put a great deal of thought into the design - and not some "that'll do" as the docudrama presents. It went by a dramatised and edited version of Waris and Verity's memories rather than the other side of the experience from Brackachi :) But it makes for a good scene in the drama
I started watching Doctor Who with William Hartnell back in 1963. I'm always amazed how much David Bradley immediately teleports me back to the Hartnell era. The likenesses between the two men is uncanny.
***** haven't got a clue and neither does the Doctor as he said the words I left in my first comment when he and 11 were in the War Doctors TARDIS. I suspect the only one who knows is the TARDIS herself ;)
Ali CG Actually, *the roundels* do perform some sort of function. What is known is that opening them and then restructuring the circuits within can either cause or solve problems with the TARDIS mechanisms. Also, they can be inspected to learn more about the machine, but whether that is canon or not depends on how one views the matter at hand. They are where the TARDIS's mechanical circuits are located.
I so wish they'd used these sets, costumes, and actors to refilm at least some of Hartnell's missing episodes. Would it have been so terrible a thing to restore them to the "library"?
Especially episodes that are entirely missing or are missing a considerable amount of episodes, like "Marco Polo" or "The Daleks' Master Plan" (which hey since they did a recreation of the episode that acts as a prequel to Master Plan, maybe that story in particular isn't too out of the question?)
As much as no one can ever replace Hartnell and Troughton, part of me wants them to redo a bit of the 1st and 2nd doctor's run just due to the sheer amount of missing episodes.
Originally the rotor column was to resemble a vacuum tube with pointed dome. But construction was too expensive. And the column became a design classic.
I really hope a movie like this is made for the 60th showing how the show dealt with regeneration and a new Doctor. Making one showing how the showing how the show has changed over time for the 75th would be great too.
The more I watch this, the more I am convinced Jessica Raine who plays Verity can be a really good Doctor. Or just having a Doctor who has the same gusto as Verity or pays homage to Doctor Who's first Producer would be a really good idea.
***** piffle! Of course they weren't officially named. But names are merely identifiers...roundels and the round things both refer to the same architectural feature. In the context of the series, however, they will always and forever be known as the round things. If you choose to go all adult and formal and refer to them as roundels, be my guest.
I loved this special, and this had to have been my favorite part. I almost died when I was watching the 50th Anniversary again and my mom, who knows nothing about Doctor Who, pointed out that part of the War Doctor's TARDIS console looked like the lid of a mason jar. I grinned at her and told she had no idea how close she was to the truth XD
1:22 Definitely not intentional but I like the idea that they put those broken circles there to represent the number of doctors we got. One in the left as the first, and on the right, all of the rest that come.
@Cliven Longsight so just because that's what he used to call them, that term is the ONLY RIGHT ANSWER THAT WE MUST ALL ACCEPT despite it having multiple canon names
@@jackburns6403 It's also the technical name for them. As much as I love the "Look it's the round things!" moment in the 50th Anniversary, they *do* have an actual designation. Just because Moffat couldn't be bothered to do research and give them their proper terminology in the special doesn't automatically make "round things" what they're actually called.
Perhaps for Series 10, but I think they still want to get some more mileage from this one; it's only a couple years old. The only reason the previous one was scrapped was because they moved to new facilities.
I think there should be an episode in the next series were The Doctor fixes the chameleon circuit. So the episode starts out with The Doctor just tinkering away fixing another problem with the Tardis when he accidentally fixes the chameleon circuit than him and his companion land at there destination and when they walk out they notice that the Tardis has turned into ( add random outer shell to whatever the episode is about ), he gets upset because his favorite blue box has changed and the companion gets confused as they didn't know the Tardis could do that. So the rest of the episode plays out and at the end The Doctor has to run away from something ( say a Dalek ) and he forgets to put the shields up to maximum and the Dalek fires at the Tardis breaking the chameleon circuit again thus making it so BBC don't have to waste budget on changing the appearance every episode and being able to keep the blue box. Just something for the older fans to appreciate.
So being a who fan there's a few thing i want for next season and Steven if your reading look close i want river song back even if it for just one episode i need to see her react to this new darker doctor we have here and also i want to see martha jone why you all ask well because she the only one who can come back and not for ever just one or two episodes couldnt hurt right and also the next person to join the doctor i want to see someone out of the box and also a new tardis and screwdriver

Did they use to live edit TV in 1963? I know retakes were undesirable because of cost of reel, but I was under the impression they still edited by hand in post?
They did, but live editing was cheaper so I wouldn't be surprised if something as low budget as the original series of Doctor Who had some live editing.
This is why I would KILL for them to get ahold of the original film and everything so they can rescan it all and remaster it. Imagine the original series in 4K HDR+.
I read somewhere that Hartnell didn't like the way the Doctor was presented in the unaired pilot and he didn't want to the Doctor to be portrayed as harsh and cruel.
The First pilot wasn't shown because the stagehands couldn't close the Tardis doors properly and you could hear them banging in the background. They also thought that Susan's futuristic costume didn't work, so they put her in ordinary 1960s clothes instead. They also swapped Hartnell's suit and the for the more Edwardian look.
So basically the reason behind “the round things” existence was bc the artist just rushed and wanted to stop being bothered? Well honestly it I loved the simplicity of the TARDIS design.
To think, that the TARDIS was born of a producer's impatience and a prop designer's short temper.
Only in this docudrama, not in reality :)
agreed....was way to clean.

No idea.
I think there should be more round things on the walls, I used to have a lot of round things, I wonder where I put them...
a game on roblox calls them roundels
From David being William, to David being the First Doctor.
From Sacha being the Waris, to Sacha being The Master.
To David being the First Doctor and Sasha being The Master in the same episode.
I'd love it if Jessica Raine became The Doctor one day
Wait... that's the Master!
Gearhead the master travels to universe and created the TV show that creates the Master in an alternative universe

What genius simplicity.
1:37 "Too bloody big. Takes up half the studio." - William Hartnell.
Just you wait for 2005's Tardis.
The size of the set actually was a problem in the original series. They had to scale down the set later on to make room.
It's supposed to be big! It's bigger on the inside!
I think 2011 was pretty big too, it had different layers and I think it even had a walkway around the edge above the main floor
Are we forgetting the TV movie
@@Silverwind87 why did i read this in the 11th doctor's voice? 😂

The 6th Doctor fixed the chameleon circuit. Everyone hated it, so they changed it back quickly. They won't do it again.
Something similar happened before actually, the circuit was fixed, but it changed into weird things (pillars, a piano) so the doctor undid it.
