    Wonderful kind doggies, the flat coated retriever. We’ve had 3 over the years and watching your lovely woofer on your video, makes me want another one. 👏👏👏

    My old buddy Albin, rest his soul in dog heaven, was the greatest. The most silly and friendly dog there ever was. We used to describe him with that silly hyena in The Lion King, but friendly. Always in a good mood and ever so gentle. Sure, he would run across the living room floor and accidentally slide into the wall face first, but he would also rest his head on you in the couch. (also the occasional fart, but whatever) I will always love him and his breed. Such an awesome breed for active families!

    Our liver Flattie departed for the Rainbow Bridge at the ripe age of 13.5. She was a terrific family member. We did field trial work with her was well as Dog Dance and even Schutzhund (yes and she was pretty good and LOVED the bite work). And ... she kept her great "soft mouth" despite the Schutzhund work.

    The best dogs ever. I owned 5 of them. Never had an issues with wild zoomies. However we made sure they had plenty of exercise, including swimming in our pond. We also started working with them as puppies right away, learning to walk on a lead, heeling, staying, recall, giving any object to us at request. We had two in agility as well.
    I miss them. The cancer that pops up in the breed needs to be addressed by breeders. I lost most of them too young.

No heath issues, couldn’t get him near water and was like a rug on the floor. So good w kids...yes protective. Never barked unless someone on the property. He was the BEST! Love yo channel. Thanks.

    I like this one. Quite glad they're not too popular. You have to seek out a good breeder, and do some work to get one.
    High energy dog but, the one in the video is absolutely relaxed on the couch there. Anyways, they're a field-bred type Retriever so, yeah they're best suited to an active home.

      Agreed. My friend has a rough collie and he's the sweetest dog ever. Is good off leash, good alert dog too (though their high pitched bark isn't much for intimidating), super friendly yet aloof enough to not be a velcro dog. But I'm not sure if this speaks for all rough collies.

    Was wondering about these guys as a stability service dog. Researching large breeds that are good with kids as I work in an elementary school. Swimming would be a preferred exercise option as we live near a river and mobility for me is an issue. Also considering Gordon setters or a Collie. I like uncommon breeds. Currently have a Clumber and have had a Sussex spaniel in the past. Would LOVE an Otterhound.

    I've been very lucky to have a flat coat as a friend and member of the household. Yes, she did pass from cancer (osteosarcoma), and yes, they shed...ALOT, but I have to admit, she was a super friendly dog. My niece learned to stand by pulling herself up using her fur, and she also learned to walk by holding on to her tail. The only thing my dog did was to look over at me as if to ask "do I have to put up with this?" Once I said yes, she did, she put up with it just fine and even walked very slowly so my niece would not fall. (My flat coat also prevented her from taking a header into the stone fireplace bench by inserting herself in between the falling child and the bench...instead of a crack on her skull, she got a mouthful of fur) My nephew used her as a pillow and she loved it. That said, getting her out of a body of water was a task. We lived on a lake and if she got off her leash, you knew that you would be hauling 70 lbs of wet flat coat back up the hill. My favorite story is when we were at a dog park and met up with a bunch of goldens (golden meet-up). Some silly owner threw a tennis ball into the water and was shocked by the mass migration of dogs into the water to fetch it. Getting about 20 dirty looks, the thrower said "I thought only my dog would go after it" Personality wise, she always wanted to be around you and with the family, and loved seeing new people. We had a Irish Red and White Setter after she passed and we missed the retriever personality. Since my wife is allergic to flat coats, we have a golden now that has a very similar personality...but she is a field type golden, not show type. Those are definitely not lazy

    This might sound a bit crooked. But my reason why i want one, is because im looking for a dog that can force/make me being more active. Cause I'm not the type to go out and walk just because, and mostly gaming inside simple cause I don't know what to do outside even if I wanted to go. And a dog is not a "just because" reason. And a lovely entertaining way of getting your portion of outside vitamins. Plus I love playing with dogs and training so hitting multiple birds with 1 stone.

    I love the flat coats I know - except for this one fella that's super insistent about his plans to become Choco's puppy daddy ... BTW, I run into flat coats quite regularly around here, and I wonder whether they're maybe more popular here in Switzerland than in the US - around here they're one of the breeds you see quite regularly. (Either that, or a bunch of people with Goldies just broke out the black spray paint ... )

      @@LiamMurphydogsCool experience: A couple hours after commenting, I went out for a ramble with Choco and we met an older man with a 10-year-old flat coat girl. She and Choco got along real nice, and we walked together to where I'd parked my bike and he'd parked his car. He told me that she's his 3rd flat coat, with number four - a puppy - on the way this spring. He loves his flat coats, even though they often die young, of cancer - like you said. (Apparently, the cancer thing is problem here too.) It's really cool to watch your shows and then run into people with the dogs you talk about and act like I know stuff!

    • @Confidentk9sCa
      @Confidentk9sCa 5 років тому

      Yes, the FCR is much more popular in Europe than anywhere. There are FCRs in the US, here in Canada and then the very odd ones living in many other places around the world. The US and Canada have no where near as many as Europe or especially the UK. But I like the fact they are not popular over here because it lowers the health problems. Sadly the more popular (like the Golden Retriever) the more health problems. A lot of people question if FCRs are a mix of a Lab, or Golden, or a Irish Setter or many other guesses. That causes some pet peeves with many FCR owners, but again the less known for this type of breed, the better in my opinion. :)

    Flatties are like Italian cars. Once you have one no other breed will do. But they are fragile, very fragile. Prepare for heartbreak and enjoy every day. Also, if you and your spouse work 9-5 don't torture your flattie, get a different breed. They thrive on contact.

      @LiamMurphydogs  5 років тому +1

      D great question. Absolutely. I feel like climate is a very important part in picking the right breed. For instance a husky down in Florida would not be as happy as a husky in Maine. Sight hounds definitely would be much happier in warmer climates like Phoenix as opposed to up north. Not to say that people can’t give dogs a good life no matter where they are I just think from experience few people get dogs for purpose and more on looks which causes a lot of stress on both owners and dogs. I really want to get into this deeper you just literally gave birth to the Breed Review podcast! Seriously that’s such a great question I’m seriously going to record
