Just a pointer to help... Use a fly fishing spool threader..it looks like a wish bone.. that way you can really pull on your work and get very detailed... Just a suggestion... That's what I use.... Hope that helps

I have held onto my Eagle feathers (but not been able to use the number of them I have) for YEARS because I've been too scared to make a fan, and it's been difficult to find good instruction. your fan looks great, i love the thread work, i make my own fans for dancing, however i don't do thread-work or plume-work, i actually use plastic pony beads and from a distance they do look like thread-work, I'm planning on making a video on how i make my fans if your interested, but again you did a fabulous job, and your feathers are beautiful
Just beautiful!! Sometimes we learn as we go. Trial and error. My grandfather passed when I was 10 and I never met any if his family. He chose to live as a french Canadian instead of sharing his beautiful Native American heritage and beliefs with his kids and grandkids. It saddens me but I believe he must have had his reasons. Just came across this. And this is the cutest and best video I’ve ever seen! One thing I learned to remind myself constantly is when it comes to powwow regalia work is don’t worry about how it looks up close because nobody at the pw is ever looking that close to your outfit, beadwork or feather work. I did my redtail hawk fan the same way--washi tape, clearcoat (the brush-on kind) to hold it in place, and E6000 adhesive to hold the feathers in place. I figured if it could hold on auto body parts, it'll hold up for powwow! I even use the stuff to rubberise my moc soles.
Shout out to the Wandering Bull!! I only live a town away from them ❤ Totally where I got my fan handle as well. My heart dropped when you said you had to take it apart... Just know, it came out beautifully!!
They saved my butt at the last Mohegan Wigwam Festival lol...I had to get a replacement set of deer hair cones ASAP from them because of a "wardrobe malfunction." Love them

Hello I'm an indigenous Maya person this helped me with making mine. I used macaw feathers for mine since macaws are symbolic birds for our people along side the quetzel. The Macaw in our creation story used to be the sun and would reflect the light upon the land with it's feathers.

I'm trying to learn how to make the feather plume hairpiece (women's regalia) and I'll be beading my headband soon also. I'd be super-thrilled to find a video on how to make those (though I've been beading for a few years now so it's more the structural how-to that I haven't figured out yet). She picks her materials from a collection of stock items from the forest.... Also there is one tradition to use in indigenous crafts, with something from the animal world, something from the botanical world and something form the earth.
I understand everyone's preference for e6000 but I feel like it's easier to work with aileen's tacky glue. My oldest fan is about 8 years and it has not come apart yet but I don't dance, just ceremony use.
Did you do anything such as fasting or/and smudging after you received the feathers from the repository? If so, how long did you fast for, was it a berry only diet, did you have a ceremony?
I once bought a fan and my aunt got so mad at me saying” we do not buy our fans, fans are gifts/earned though ceremony”, we can also traditionally trade for feathers as well, when I got the fan it was taken away and I was told to earn it, I hope you receive the feathers from creator instead of buying them as a lot of people frown upon it, it was a huge wake up call for me as I try to walk the traditional/modern way

Thank you for the video. I think you could have left out a few of your editorials but then that wouldn't make it your video. Your fan is beautiful it is yours you made it with your hands and your ideas. It is yours. I would have suggested you use hot glue instead of the wood filler. Also the glue to put on the black leather, my recommendation is to use 3m spray glue or a contact cement. I would prefer the contact cement but the 3m is pretty much the same in a spray. I would have also, since you are good with a needle, stiched the black parts together. But then you always have next time and from what I can see you may have an opportunity to make more for others. You're color schemes are natural and your sense of symmetry is very good. I'm am more of a raw natural. The feather fans I've seen in museums are pretty raw. The feathers I find along the road are from birds I'm not sure of what species I just pick up what I can find that are of interest. I try to straighten them put the like ones together and try to keep it as symmetrical as possible but also with a very raw native look rather than a commercial look. In my opinion, and this is only my opinion as I am not a "registered Native American" I am only one who appreciates the culture, the commercial beauty that has bestowed many off the Native culture is part of the indoctrinated white culture. I'm not saying that is bad but it looks like something in a GAP or American Eagle commercial.
BTW When I came up with the design of the "WING" fan handle and it's name I only called a wing because of it's curved shape. I didn't intend for any particular kind of feather to be used

Did you cut the quills on the feathers for your fan? Iam trying to make one now but am nervous about cutting the quills

When I cut braches or dowels, for such things, I use pruning shears.

You don't wrap the fan stick in buckskin until after all the work is done. How ever some do make use of a paper cone to mount the florals

Is there a certain type of paper to use? The floral work on my fan was damaged when we got rained on :( I'm trying to learn floral work done on paper

Contact rubber glue instead of the gorilla glue
