I’ll try my best to explain as this genuinely one of the best songs ever made. This Kendrick rapping from the perspective of tragic stories of people he knew growing up in Compton. The first verse is a from the perspective of a male who was a gang member who tells Kendrick about the events of his brother passing, then he tells Kendrick to tell this story when he makes it big, he unfortunately died to gang violence as he was a piru (blood) before he can see Kendrick make it, hence the “if I die before your album drops *gunshots*” Second verse is the perspective of a young female with an older sister named Keisha (you must listen to Keisha’s song on section 80 for it to make sense) who was a prostitute because it was her only means of survival & this is her little sister speaking on her perspective hence she said that Keisha’s reality is her future (following the same footsteps) Keisha was killed while being raped. This young lady was traumatized by her sisters passing as Kendrick tries to warn her not to go down the same path, but she doesn’t listen and says “I’ll probably live longer than you, and never fadeaway” but as she keeps talking her voice fadeaway as her emotion doesn’t allow her to listen and she too dies because she fades away (genius) Third verse is Kendrick reminiscing on the events that occurred causing his stomach to turn, and he feels survivors guilt & remorse all for things that were not his fault. He explains how he wrote these raps to bring awareness of the vulgar and tragic stories of people he loved and deemed good people out in horrible situations (Good Kid, Mad City) then questions his own morality while leading a cry of hope for the weak to one day become strong including himself and hopes he’s done enough for someone to sing about him as well (he has) This is an absolute genius of a song that does not get the praise it deserves. This is one of the greatest songs ever with a chorus that can be chanted throughout the universe, thank you Kendrick for painting such a tragic story so beautifully
Keisha’s sister didn’t die from being raped. She died from HIV/AIDS. Which is why she said a doctor’s approval isn’t something she needs, because she never gets tested. Her voice faded away because HIV takes time to progress to AIDS so it happens over time.
You have to listen to the album that this song is on “Good Kid Maad City” to understand this song. It’s an entire story. Also his song “Keisha’s Song” will help you understand the second verse
Echoing this post. This album is a tremendous story of redemption and included as part of the title is "a short film by Kendrick Lamar". I appreciate you for your visual analysis so much, the entire album can be viewed in your mind as a film even though it's just music. Enjoy
This was a very difficult song with a lot of layers and meaning and I do hope we can open up a conversation here and yall enlighten me. But be respectful ❤❤
Love this but go ahead and give your mom the insight to understand better, I can tell you we’re holding back but I think it’s more helpful for her to get it
The beat to me for the first part of the song resembles someone running. Each person is living in a traumatic and toxic environment which they are constantly “running” from by coping the way they know how. Living a fast and hard lifestyle by gang banging or prostitution in this case. They were raised by the streets they are now running in. When you try to run from your problems (yourself) you will only run into yourself. The beat switches when it starts to catch up with them that they’re only repeating a toxic cycle.
This is one of my favorite Kendrick songs - Each verse is from a different perspective. The first is from one of Kendrick’s friends, who also acts as a stand-in for all young underprivileged black boys. He talks about how he’s struggling and caught up in this world of violence and death, and wonders if he’ll ever be happy again like he was as a child. He’s questioning the gang life after his brother died (“it’s a trip how we trip off of colors”), and he he wants to get out, but he’s afraid of meeting the same violent end as his brother. The verse is cut off mid-sentence by gunshots, a representation of all the lives cut short by violence. The second verse is from the perspective of a prostitute. She complains that Kendrick isn’t empathetic enough to the struggles women face and calls him out for not being understanding. (“How could you just put her on blast and shit, judging her past and shit”). She goes into more depth about her situation (“imma need that 40 dollars even if I gotta fuck suck and swallow”). She says she’s fine and she doesn’t want Kendrick’s help and that he can’t help her anyways, and she insists that she’ll be able to make it on her own. She says “I’ll live longer than you and never fade away,” but as soon as she says that her voice begins to fade out as the verse ends. Black men die suddenly and loudly, while black women are pushed to the outskirts of society and slowly wither away, while no one can hear their voice. The third verse is Kendrick ruminating on death and his place in all this. He grapples with whether he’s exploiting these people by making music about them, or if his music is helpful in some way. He talks about how he wants his music to live on after he dies, and he hopes that he does enough in his lifetime to be remembered as a positive force in the culture.
You’ve said me the trouble of explaining the depths and layers of the song. Thank you 🙏🏿. Glad to see mom doing okay as well. All my love and best wishes ❤

As others have stated, this is intended to be listened to in its entirety. Good Kid M.A.A.D city is a short film. Glad you’re back after your surgery. 😊
This song makes me cry because kendrick speaks my truth. What am i to do in situations that aren't my fault yet im impacted. Do we do wrong for money, just to live, or do i lay down and die. God is to slow. Do i die to stay alive. We need patience. Who does that mske me
The way the women's voice fade's away rven though she said " i will never fade away"😮 im picking that now man. I've benn listen to this song for years man
I really like what your mom says about the stacato on the chorus, and understanding how Kendrick is as an artist he would definitely have used his cadence to give that effect to the listener. Most everyone would feel that when listening to it, I'm not quite sure that many would see the reasoning as easily, especially just hearing the song by itself.
To get full context of this song y’all gotta listen to the full album straight through, the skits and interludes glue everything together and it will all make sense
Hes telling the story of different people in different verses. The 1st one was his friends older brother. His friend was killed in front of Kendrick and the brother went and got revenge. He was thinking Kendrick for loving his brother but also explains that he likely will lead to the same fate based on the life he lives which is why the verse ends with gunshots as he also is killed. 2nd verse is the sister of a woman, Kendrick wrote a previous song about. Telling Kendrick he had no right to tell the story and shame her sister. She is also leads to the same path as her sister and “fades away” as many women do thats in that position… never having people advocate for them. 3rd verse is Kendrick himself… wrestling with life and death. Survivors guilt and the position he holds as a famous rapper who feels he has a responsibility to highlight these stories. Its a beautiful song. A real tear jerker and masterfully crafted. Truly one of the most impactful songs Ive ever listed to.
Man I used to listen to this song nearly daily. It hits a lot deeper when you can relate to the message. My mom told me that my cousin got shot the other day (not dead but in hospital). I was listening to this song in the car normally, but soon the idea that I could’ve lost him hit my soul and I started crying. We need to stop the senseless violence and teach the children young that there is no benefit to the gangster lifestyle. It’s sad how many people are trapped in that cycle already.
This song is one of the best songs in history. Also produced by a friend of mine Like (From Pac Div). This song is tough to listen to because the stories hit so close to home.
I love that you are showed your mom this beautiful masterpiece after her witnessing the brutal disses he released. Kendrick truly is an artist and this song in particular relates to so many people in so many ways. Much love from California!
The first verse was speaking from the perspective of his friends brother. His friend got killed. 2nd verse was the perspective of the sister of the girl he spoke about in section.80. Her voice trails off because a lot of times women in her position are voiceless and people generally don’t care about women who are pimped out (There is a stigma)The 3rd verse is Kendrick responding to both.
One of my favorite songs, this albums was made to be told like a movie would, so gets a little bit easier to understand within the album context, but you guys did great! @MommaTaunT I appreciate the empathy and consideration you show for what Kendrick's experience within the culture. Unfortunately, some people live and grow up in environments where they have to make certain decisions to survive. It's to look down on some people from a place of comfort and privilege when not faced with the same dangers and temptations daily.

There’s an unreleased Kendrick song titled “Prayer” on UA-cam. Incredible. It leaked before it could be officially released. A hidden gem. It’s the original “The Heart Part 5”.
Thank you for taking time, and appreciating the value of this song. I do agree, "Keisha's Song" by Kendrick should be the next song. I look forward to other Kendrick breakdowns. Subscribed!
I know you wanted her to come with her conclusion of the song but I couldn’t help to scream “man just help your mom and explain what’s going on” lol 😂 but other people are right, this is part of a story in a album that needs to be heard in it’s entirety.. bless to your mom..
You gotta listen to the album from start to finish. One of my favorite lines is "banana clip split his banana pudding, I'm like trey that's Cuba Gooding" crazy movie from 1991 called Boyz in the hood. Check it out. Cuba plays the character Trey who is living in Compton submerged into the street. But he is a kind soul. That's all ima say watch Boyz n the hood
The first part of the song that's called Sing for the Moment it's about the perspective of his dead friend's brother. The irony with that is his best friend brother end up dying as he was trying to tell Kendrick if you make a song about me, hence the gunshot in the background before the course came in. The second verse is from the perspective of Keisha sister, Kendrick did a song about Kesha on Section 80 call Keisha's Song, her pain. Really deep song, you guys should check it out. I guess Keisha's sister did not like the fact that Kendrick put her business out there like that. The third verse is the perspective of Kendrick Lamar, question himself if he did enough to be remembered. As far as dying of thirst, fat ties into two different interludes on the good kid Maad City album. After the death of Kendrick Lamar's friend , Kendrick and his other friend was having a breakdown, they were going to to retaliate on the people who took his friend's life until they ran into a religious elderly woman. Kendrick and his friends calm down with her prayer. The religious elderly woman was the one who mentioned about kendrink and his friends dying of thirst. It's definitely a deep meaning, I wish I could explain it better. You guys would have to go back to the good kid Maad City and listen to the whole album from the beginning till the end to understand.
the first part is about a black man that dies by gang related violence when he was questionning the sense of it all ; the second part is about a girl that dies by aids complaining to kendirck about the song he made about her sister, as she herself, was rap** in her first time by 3black men ; got into prostitution and couldn't escape it ; the last part is about kendrick questioning if he's worthy to the eyes of his community and wondering if he did enought to protect black people from the shit they have to deal with
Yooooo! I think mom is right about him singing the hook with the slight pause cause he's saying his last words. Great catch if it's true, and I think it is 👍🏿
I'm a French native speaker and after ten years, I’ve realized that "dying of thirst" is at the same time about craving for God (holy water and baptism) and how vanity - chasing things like sex, money, and fame - leaves the soul empty, where we die of that thirst. Is it obvious to catch it for an english native speaker or not ?
I just wanna echo this, its a beautiful song on its own. But in the context of the album and Keishas Song, to me its one of the greatest of all time. Hope you get well soon!
Just to add one of my favorite bits: the dying of thirst refers to not just a need for holy water and redemption. It also refers to thirsting for drugs, booze and women. Lastly it refers to bloodthirst. This is what took me a while to get - when he switches to "I'll show you how to dye your thirst" he is speaking from the perspective of a gang member, and the dye refers to gang colors. So dyeing the bloodthirst in the color of your enemy.
This is very dope Please use Genius for context fam it will help the quality of the videos cause hes talking about people in his neighbourhood not his family directly
I love how your mom empathizes with the lyrics.🥰 It is indeed a difficult emotional song, but it also has a good replay value. I love Samidot so much.🥹 It's one of my best Kendrick Lamar songs of all time!💕

love the kendricks reaction
There’s an unreleased Kendrick song titled “Prayer” on UA-cam. Incredible. It leaked before it could be officially released. A hidden gem. It’s the original “The Heart Part 5”.
Thank you for taking time, and appreciating the value of this song. I do agree, "Keisha's Song" by Kendrick should be the next song.
I look forward to other Kendrick breakdowns. Subscribed!

Glad you're okay, miss lady and it's interesting that you are more
Insightful and entertaining than most❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you ❤
I know you wanted her to come with her conclusion of the song but I couldn’t help to scream “man just help your mom and explain what’s going on” lol 😂 but other people are right, this is part of a story in a album that needs to be heard in it’s entirety.. bless to your mom..
Thank you ❤
@Beatz_107 has painted a clear on the first part 'Sing About Me' basic message... Lovely
Waiting for a reaction on 'Fear' and 'Real'
❤
Mom it's so good to see you again. I pray for health. Also this is one of my favorite songs from him
Thank you 🫶
Seen your videos right before moms went into surgery, glad she’s back & doing well 🙌🏾
Thanks ❤
You and yo mom have beautiful spirits bro 🖤💪🏾💯
❤❤
this my favorite song on that album
You gotta listen to the album from start to finish. One of my favorite lines is "banana clip split his banana pudding, I'm like trey that's Cuba Gooding" crazy movie from 1991 called Boyz in the hood. Check it out. Cuba plays the character Trey who is living in Compton submerged into the street. But he is a kind soul. That's all ima say watch Boyz n the hood
check out "Kush and Corinthians" and "Mortal Man" by kendrick
Gave her react to the whole album so she can experience the story
I will bit I’m still recovering so we have to take it slow
Wish I could’ve done this with my mum, respect…definitely subscribing.

Show her the song "Prayer" by Kendrick Lamar :)
Miss you guys and your Kendrick reactions. Always praying for mom 🙏
Thank you 🙏
the first part is about a black man that dies by gang related violence when he was questionning the sense of it all ; the second part is about a girl that dies by aids complaining to kendirck about the song he made about her sister, as she herself, was rap** in her first time by 3black men ; got into prostitution and couldn't escape it ; the last part is about kendrick questioning if he's worthy to the eyes of his community and wondering if he did enought to protect black people from the shit they have to deal with

How did you get that from the third verse?
This one is better in context with the album. Not just one you start with if you don’t know. It’ll depress you lol
I’ll be okay 😉
Glad to see moms back
Thank you ❤
Yooooo! I think mom is right about him singing the hook with the slight pause cause he's saying his last words. Great catch if it's true, and I think it is 👍🏿
Thank you ❤
Hope this song goes viral more people need to hear it
The song it self I think did , our reaction won’t I’m afraid
u should keep genius on the side for certain bars
The lovely viewers are my genius 😉
I would love to see an entire reaction to GKMC from beginning to end
I'm a French native speaker and after ten years, I’ve realized that "dying of thirst" is at the same time about craving for God (holy water and baptism) and how vanity - chasing things like sex, money, and fame - leaves the soul empty, where we die of that thirst.
Is it obvious to catch it for an english native speaker or not ?
I’m not an English native speaker either 😉
🔥🔥🔥 yall should do..."How much a dollar cost "
I whole heartedly want this song playing on my funeral, I’ll never fade away 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
I hope that will not be the case for a long time ❤❤
I think that the song he is talking about is Keisha's song from Section 80.
But it says Brenda has a baby and that what tupacs song
You guys are reacting to songs like these without the full context of everything, so im begging you to start doing full album reactions
A full album is a bit too much for me rn. But if you give me suggestions about the next song , appreciate it ❤
@@MommaTaunT understandable, whenever you're ready!

I just wanna echo this, its a beautiful song on its own. But in the context of the album and Keishas Song, to me its one of the greatest of all time.
Hope you get well soon!
Just to add one of my favorite bits:
the dying of thirst refers to not just a need for holy water and redemption.
I LOVE YALL VIDEOS AND THAT SHE LOVES DOT💙💙💙
Thank you ❤
This is very dope Please use Genius for context fam it will help the quality of the videos cause hes talking about people in his neighbourhood not his family directly
Y’all are my Genius 😉
I love how your mom empathizes with the lyrics.🥰 It is indeed a difficult emotional song, but it also has a good replay value. I love Samidot so much.🥹 It's one of my best Kendrick Lamar songs of all time!💕

Death is normal for him on a day to day basis it’s just a cycle of things he been through talking about his love one he lost and reminiscing
USE GENIUS! You can always pause the song and it’s easier to see the context of certain bars.
I think it’s so much more fun to guess and feel and talk about it , I always go in blank on purpose
