Thank you for your comment. I am from Louisiana but am not catholic and I always wondered if there was cognitive dissonance between the actual teachings of the bible and the behavior of those who represented the church (not to mention the whiteness of all the iconography). I wondered why don't the parishioners seek their own higher truth/spirituality; now I know clearly some do.

      🟩🟩🟧Decent Republicans, are frustrated
and embarrassed, with their Party’s 60 year long association with the racist KKK.
      ------------------------
🟪🟩In 1964, Democrat President Lyndon Johnson, signed the historic Civil Rights Bill. The bill integrated facilities for everyone: (restaurants, water fountains, hotels, bars, public hospitals, theaters, front seating on public buses, public schools, libraries, public restrooms, taxi cabs,
front seating on passenger trains, public swimming pools, front seating in courtrooms, housing, medical care, employment, public colleges, parks and even public cemeteries and sections of prisons, believe it or not!
Blacks traveling on Greyhound and other bus services, were forced by law, to take rear seats when crossing over from Northern to Southern states, prior to the passage of the 1964 Civil Right Bill.
      ------------------------
✅✅ Until the late 1950s, black department
store shoppers in many parts the south, were forbidden from entering dressing rooms to try on pieces of clothing, for fit. Before that, the rule was: buy as is, with no returns or exchanges, for people of color.
🟧 Jewish stores were more accommodating.
Up until the 1960’s, the few black police 👮 👮‍♀️
officers in the racist south, were taunted and abused and they were not allowed to make arrest of whites, they could only call white officers for them to possibly make arrests.
      ------------------------
🟩🟧 Because of continuing Republican racism, nearly 90% of black Americans 🇺🇸 have voted Democratic for more than a half century. Jews, Catholics, Latinos, American Indians, college educated, advanced college educated, organized labor, youth and college voters, LBGT, and working class Americans, all vote heavily for Democrats.
      -----------------------
🟧🟪🟩A study by Gallup research, found that women with college degrees, are more likely to identify as Democrats.
Women with advanced college degrees, are even more likely to identify as Democrats.
      ------------------------
🟧🟪 The Republican Party Issued A Formal Apology To Black Americans in 2005, for the many years of Playing The Race Card. Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehnman, issued a formal apology to Black Americans via the NAACP. The apology was given for the many years that the Republican Party engaged in race-baiting and other racial tricks in order to win elections. A Harvard educated attorney, Mehlman traveled to the NAACP’s Convention in Milwaukee, to deliver his message. Among other things, he promised a friendlier relationship between his party and black Americans. But, other Republican officials were not pleased that their party had issued an apology to black people. Chairman Mehlman was soon let go of his position and Republican Party racism against blacks continued.
      ------------------------
🟪🟧 Ronald Reagan and Racist Republicans, Fought Like Hell To Deny A Fellow Republican, The Reverend Martin Luther King, A National Holiday
Republican President Ronald Reagan and longtime racist Republican Senator Jesse
of of North Carolina, both argued against the passage of a MLK national holiday bill.
Senator Helms was especially vicious in his actions, he created a fake 300-page document, in which he accused the Reverend King of being a Marxist and a Communist.
New York Democrat Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, declared the document to be, “a packet of fifth.” He then threw it to the floor of the Senate and stomped on it.
The MLK holiday bill, soon had the growing support of Americans.
But, in a last attempt to support racist Senator Helms accusations, Reagan falsely hinted again, that the Reverend King, whose family were ‘legacy Abraham Lincoln Republicans,’ may have had Communist ties.
The veto-proof bill eventually passed and President Reagan signed it.
      ------------------------
      ✅✅ THEY ARE AMERICAN HEROES...🇺🇸🇺🇸
The Reverend Martin Luther King was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. He and the Reverend Jessie Jackson, were shot at once and beaten twice while marching in the racist conservative South, for civil rights.
🟪🟪 The Rev.Jessie Jackson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in a White House Ceremony in 2,000. It was hosted by President Bill Clinton, in recognition of Rev. Jackson’s many years of fighting for racial social justice in America. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
🟧🟧Rev. Al Sharpton, marched in the racist South for 25 years, with Jewish Rabbis, liberal college students and others, to fight against
      Southern racism.
      ------------------------
🟪🟩🟧According Presidential Historians, Barack Obama, is the 12th ranked President ever and Donald Trump is ranked at only number 42.
      ------------------------
      🟪🟪 VIDEO LEAKED OF REPUBLICAN
GROUP BRAGGING ABOUT WRITING VOTER SUPPRESSION BILLS
      May 13, 2021 Democracy Docket
WASHINGTON, D.C.-The dark money group Heritage Action, associated with the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation, was caught on a leaked video bragging about their role in writing the series of voter suppression bills that have passed in states across the court over the last few months. The video was recorded at a private meeting with high dollar donors in April, and published by Mother Jones.
In the video, Heritage Action executive director Jessica Anderson brags about the group’s work to “quickly and quietly” get voter suppression legislation passed in key swing states, as part of the group and the GOP’s promotion of the Big Lie and continuing efforts to limit ballot access after Donald Trump’s loss. Heritage Action’s work, according to Anderson, includes recommending provisions to be included in legislation, providing state legislators with information and language to help draft proposals, and sometimes even writing the bills themselves before feeding them to local representatives. In other cases, “we have a sentinel, on our behalf, give [the legislators] the model legislation so it has that grassroots, from the bottom-up type of vibe,” Anderson said on video.
      ------------------------
🟪🟪 TILL THE 1960’s, TEXAS CONSERVATIVES FORCED BLACKS AND LATINOS TO TAKE LITERACY TEST TO BE ABLE TO VOTE
Blacks and Latinos attempting to vote, often were told by election officials that they had gotten the date, time or polling place wrong, that they possessed insufficient literacy skills or that they had filled out an application incorrectly. Black people, whose population suffered a high rate of illiteracy due to centuries of oppression and poverty, often would be forced to take literacy tests, which they sometimes failed.
Voting officials, primarily in Southern states, had been known to force Black voters to “recite the entire Constitution or explain the most complex provisions of state laws,” a task most white voters would have been hard pressed to accomplish. In some cases, even Black people with college degrees were turned away from the polls.
      ------------------------
🟧🟩 White America Built Their Wealth On Welfare
🟧🟩How Decades Of Welfare Policies Lifted
Up The White Middle Class And Largely Excluded Black Americans
WELFARE IS AVAILABLE IN 34 COUNTRIES.
Far more white people have benefited from US welfare programs over the years, while black people and other people of color have been denied them in various ways, multiple historians and researchers tell Business Insider.
The coronavirus pandemic exposed the underbelly of American inequality in many ways, with people of color disproportionately likely to be laid off, and to be on the financial brink.

🟢🟢 Just how awful of a scoundrel do you have to be, in order to get kicked out of two funerals?⚰️ ⚰️
A person could live 10 lifetimes and not know of anyone to be kicked out of a funeral, yet,
Donald Trump has been kicked out of two:
      Barbara Bush's and John McCain’s.
They told Donald Trump that, a three-legged, one-eyed, parasitic, malnourished, wet, stinky, toothless, mangy, arthritic, flea infested, homeless dog, 🐕 living in a dingy dirty alley, with mouth tumors, ankle spurs, dog syphilis, tick bite paralysis, Ebola disease, and drenched in self urine, would absolutely be more welcome, than the ex-Prez.

I did not know this. The Catholic Church has a real deep-rooted history in Maryland, and to know that slavery was sanctioned by the church. My Dad was Catholic, growing up in Howard County Maryland, he was so very proud of catholicism. I had no idea. These same black people who were enslaved by the church, are still devoted to this religion pressed on. I will be reading this book.

My family, The Carroll's " think we might have a connection to this story. We ended up in Louisiana. My grandpa was a sugarcane farmer, and he told my mom stories of his brother who was quite a bit older than he, recalling stories of coming here on "big boats" and the horrors of people being thrown overboard. I am aware that the Jesuit priest that sold slaves to be sent down south, was himself a slave holder. His name was John Carroll and he founded Georgetown University in 1789. He owned more than 100 slaves.

Went to a Catholic school and we were never taught black history, yet I received foundational knowledge of black history from my parents who went to an HBCU. I learned more about black history from them and in college. So I agree that it’s not in schools because we don’t do the work to educate ourselves independent of traditional education.

As an adult raised Catholic and my ancestors were Catholic passed fdown and endocrine from their masters. Went to private Catholic schools for my education. The benefit I did learn and passed down to my children religion in some form and my 87 yr old mother was able through the Catholic Church to follow our family history on her side through the records Catholic's kept. Today I worship in a non-denominational church. My oldest went to Cathomic school and all 4 of my children were baptized and followed all of the sacraments. Yet today, we are more educated and able to worship as we choose. Yet I don't denounce my Catholic roots or education because despite all it benefited me. Glad to learn the history today and able to give my children and grandchildren an informative choice.

Another fascinating discussion. It is of vital importance that these histories are preserved for future generations. It's tough and disturbing to hear of these episodes but people should know history in the round and not just the edited hi-lights.
Here in the UK various religious churches were also involved in the slave trade- Catholic and Protestant- the only difference being that it all happened "off shore" in West Indian plantations. So many of our institutions are steeped in the blood of slaves.
The Catholic Church is one of history's most vile reprehensible institutions. It holds immense wealth and riches and it continues to ensure black people remain poor by insisting on no contraception or abortion. Catholic families tend to be larger and poorer as opposed to those people who follow Protestant religions.

The religion wasn't created to enslave them. The religion existed prior to the advent of the Transatlantic Slave trade. In fact, in the very early days of the Trade, African slaves who converted to Catholicism had the right to demand their freedom. That was the rule within the Catholic Church.

Greetings once again from Poland and thanking you Professor Karen Hunter and Ms Rachel Swarns. It is clear that there are many many stories, such as these, which the institutional hegemony would prefer not be told. It seems that they have done the accounting work and hav realised that there is not enough money or capital in the country for them to be able to pay, in arrears, either reparations or penance for their crimes against humanity. Being as we live in a capitalist society- there would also be compounded interest due (on the debt). Countless punitive damages. As for those who feign or claim ignorance, regardless of the escalating cognitive dissonance from which they suffer, it would seem they are to some degree (unconsciously) aware of those same facts. It is unthinkable for them to ,not only, relinquish privilege but to envision a life of what would amount to, for them, debt slavery which, ironically, they may have already entered into anyway. Wishing you a very happy New Year and happy everything !!!

History is a multilayered experience. It cant be reduced to black and white. After all, there were free black people throughout the Americas who also owned slaves for profit and built wealth off that. In the British Carribean, those black slaveowners also received compensation from the British government in order to set their slaves free because it was considered a loss of their property. Are you not going to associate with those black people who today are descendants of those black slaveowners?

Why does your guest sound like she making amends for the system that created the whole thing. Even though she knows it’s not right the whole Catholic belief and its impact on humanity she continues to holds on to it. How can a person be free that holds on to a lie.

Let us not forget that Christopher Columbus authored the petition to The Holy See requesting approval of the enslavement of both Indigenous "Americans" and Africans. Pope Alexander VI approved Columbus'/Queen Isabella's request. Yes, a Jesuit proudly taught me that in pre-Communion catechesis. A mighty load for the only black six-year old in class.

I dont understand gaining knowledge, knowing truth, and still doing it because my family did. The last stats I saw said at least 40% of adults are no longer affiliated or have changed the religious beliefs they grew up with. When we know better, do better? Thats just stuff we say, right. BTW, did Africans know the Creator of Life (aka by some as God) before they were forced into variations of so-called Christian religions?... We still look to them.

First off,. slavery is part of European history going back to Greeks and Romans with the word "slave" originating with Slavic groups who were the preferred targets of capturing bodies. And beyond that, the whole idea of European colonization was authorized and legitimized by the Pope as part of the continuation of the crusade via Papal Bull Dum Diversas. And the whole point was the church copied aspects of Islam which had religious support for the subjugation of infidels or non believers.
And really if AAs are serious about that history at a minimum they should have done their ancestry research and research on who were the owners.

@@tvs9978 No it communicates that I'm not concerned about Greeks or Slavs. There history is theirs, but when it comes to this particular American topic it's mines.

@user-qm2li8zx2d it's obvious that you didn't read the initial commenter entire post. He/she addressed more than just the origin of the word Slaves. Understanding the whole continuum of the institutions of slavery is important to properly comprehend and situate the American experience. Where do you think many of the slave laws that were passed in America came from? The experiences are all interconnected.

The public government has to teach the Truth because God Yeshua gave them a job to honor him Yeshua. He is grading them on what they teach and it has to be Truth, which is Him it is all about him. In the beginning I gave everything life.

Thanks to you two beautiful ladies. Why do call yourself Catholic and Christian? Yeshua God is not Christian or Catholic he is King of the Jews. He has not called anyone to become Christian or Catholic, but if you believe you become a son neither male nor female.
