- Wonderfully talented and extremely attractive Joan O'Brien singing After You've Gone. She possessed a beautiful singing voice and fine acting talent, and that she did not have a more sustained career is more a loss to the public than to her.
She is an amazing beautiful and talented and very underrated star!

This was from 1963 on the Steve Allen "Westinghouse" show on 5 night a week. This is from MY tape - I sent a copy to bandleader Donn Trenner (who's playing piano on this) and John Setar who's playing Baritone Saxophone on this - and here it is on UA-cam. Also playing is Herb Ellis on guitar, Jimmy Zito on trumpet, Frank Rosolino on Trombone, etc. Joanie O'Brien sounds great - she was on the show several times.
This woman should be a household name with her beauty and that fabulous voice! She's equally beautiful as a blonde and a brunette! I can't choose between the two! lol

One of the most beautiful, sexiest women on tv. Great voice, too. When Mary Tyler Moore was at her luscious best, while on the Van Dyke Show, Joan was one of the VERY FEW women who could compete with MTM's looks and oozing sexiness. If I had written that "Foul Weather Girl" episode on the Van Dyke Show....in the scene in the office with the big-shots, just before Janie sings, I'd have had her character say something along the line of: "...it would be a cliche that, just because I'm a friend of Rob's, I couldn't possibly have any singing talent. Well, as you're going to hear, I'm going to absolutely explode that cliche!" Kind of like the time a young Jolson was faced with an audition. He indignantly replied, "I'll sing for ya...but Jolie don't AUDITION for anybody!"
Joan O'Brien was one of those talents, unfortunately there are many, who was so versatile the industry didn't know what to do with her. She was beautiful, she could play comedy or drama, and she could sing superbly. Hollywood prefers talent it can pigeonhole -- it is a superficial medium that relies on stereotypes. Joan was far from a type. Ultimately, I think she saw the writing on the wall and told Hollywood to take a powder -- and my guess is that she was happier for it.
Ah that last scene in the Alamo when she stopped & glared at the General, wow.

She was a good singer, and really pretty, but she had a really erratic personal life. She ended up dropping out of show biz completely.
