    For clarity, there are no human hermaphrodites. A hermaphrodite can produce both sperm and eggs, which has never been documented in human history (but does occur in some other species). The confusion arises because the term hermaphrodite has previously been used erroneously to describe disorders of sexual development (DSDs) which can sometimes result in ambiguous or undeveloped external genitalia. Also of note is that DSD's are almost exclusively sex specific, and people with them are still either male or female. Objectively speaking, humans can not change sex.

    • @katansi
      @katansi 2 місяці тому +5

      I would argue that they're exclusively sex specific, whether or not we can identify which sex is being affected is a different question. Even in people with a disorder that produces an ovotestis, if there is gamete it's only ever one type. In others when there are streak gonads the genes would give us a probable outcome at minimum and sometimes ovarian or testicular cells can still show up in those. Most of the time (in literature at least) malformed or even missing gonads leave clues.

      First time I see someone describe this topic with any accuracy. Good!
      It seems very trendy among activists to claim the relative small number of intersex specimens as contradictive proof of dichotomy in human sex. And it's sad to see this falsehood go overlooked almost everywhere. The claim is errenous because intersex - somewhat untrue to its name, does not describe a specimen which inbetween female and male. Intersex is a medical term for various forms of DSD, and like you suggest, these specimens are either exclusively male or exclusively female. Every single one of them (so far at least).

    • @pwcinla
      @pwcinla 2 місяці тому +1

      "there are no human hermaphrodites"
      That's not quite true. Phenotypically, there have been a few documented cases of humans who exhibit both sets of primary sex characteristics, although they are exceedingly rare. There are also hundreds of thousands of people alive right now who are phenotypically male, but have XX allosomes, or are phenotypically female, but have XY allosomes. We don't have a good umbrella term for these (other than the vague "DSDs").
      And it's not *only* the production of eggs or sperm that determine an individual's sex, since many people whom you would readily accept as being male or female _can do neither._ Some females with XX allosomes never produce eggs. Males with XY allosomes who have had their testes removed (say, due to cancer), cannot produce sperm. There are many other examples I could cite.

    1) There's no such thing as transition surgery. The surgery makes superficial changes to your body.
    2) There's no social construct of "man" or "woman" that you can choose. Each individual stereotype is a social construct. E.g. Clothing, hairstyle, personality. We each choose a unique set of stereotypes, not "man" or "woman".
    3) You can't "identify as" a man/woman because membership of the man/woman group is based on biology.
    4) There's no evidence that there's a single "feeling" of man/woman. You know that you're a man/woman based on being aware of the biological evidence. And we each have individual feelings that only someone with the particular biology could experience. E.g. Male puberty, periods, pregnancy etc.

    • @bricology
      @bricology 2 місяці тому +1

      "There's no social construct of "man" or "woman" that you can choose. We each choose a unique set of stereotypes, not 'man' or 'woman'."
      I doubt you could find even one actual domain expert (sociologist, behavioral psychologist, et al) who would agree with that statement.
      "Man" or "woman" as a social construct is very contingent upon time and place, but there are absolutely norms that most people unconsciously model. Japan is perhaps the most clear-cut example of this, and society punishes anyone who strays too far from adopting the "appropriate" gender construct.
      And not everyone in the world "chooses stereotypes", any more than everyone chooses to be a Democrat or a Republican. There are many people who are neither, by choice, or because they are unacculturated to either position, or for some other reason. Some are apolitical. Most live in parts of the world where those terms are meaningless.
      "You can't 'identify as' a man/woman because membership of the man/woman group is based on biology."
      You're mistakenly conflating "man" with "male" and "woman" with "female". They are *not* the same, and "man"/"woman" is *not* "based on biology" the way that "male"/"female" is. A newborn female is not "a woman"; a newborn male is not "a man". And what is a person who was born with de la Chapelle Syndrome, who has XX allosomes, but is phenotypically male, or a person born with CAIS who has XY allosomes, but is phenotypically female? There is no simple answer.
      And second, "membership" in any group is ambiguous, and there are no authorities who are the agreed-upon gatekeepers, not even for "man" or "woman" (for "male" or "female", perhaps). Was the 40 year-old Michael Jackson black? Is Rachel Dolezal "black"? Who says? Is every person living in the US an "American"? -- how about if they came here _illegally?_ So claiming that "man" or "woman" is some easy determined binary is simply not a tenable position, except as sociopolitical talking points.

I could literally dress up in every costume associated with men and women since we were still hunter-gatherers and it wouldn't alter my sex. That last question might have been a joke, but it shows the difference clearly between men and women so well and why many women don't like saying "trans women are women". If you swapped the sexes in that thought experiment, a giant orgy would not be the result. Many women find sexual stuff gross and don't like being treated like an object. Seeing three guys explain what would happen if they suddenly were in the bodies of hot women is where TRFs are coming from. Men just don't get what it is like to be a woman, and visa versa. Biological sex is dictated by an individual's chromosomes and his/her current or former ability to create sperm or ovum. If an adult is so stricken by dysphoria that the only way he/she can function in society is by altering his/her appearance (i.e. transition), as moderately or radically as that person wishes, through medication or surgery, then that person should be free to do so, but that person should not be deluded into thinking his/her biological sex is actually changing.

      So you are arguing for the right to medically modifying ones body to more closely resemble the opposite sex right?
      Should the people who choose to do that be legally recognized as the opposite sex once they declare they are the opposite sex? Should that be dependant upon how much they have been medicalized to achieve this outward appearance? Or should a declaration be enough? Is it ethical to require medicalization, and surgeries to obtain legal recognition? Is it ethical for doctors and parents to allow children to undergo medical procedures to cosmetically alter their adult appearance to make them appear more like the opposite sex with procedures and medicines which have irreversible effects, health harming and life threatening side effects and will require life long medication to sustain them? Can children consent to these procedures without parental agreement? Who should pay for these body mod treatments? Is it ethical for doctors to administer drugs and surgeries which knowingly degrade a physically healthy persons organ, bone and brain health, destroy their fertility and natural sexual function and and risk their lives, to "treat" a psychological impairment? Does that honor the oath of "do no harm", or is it a misuse of medicine?
      What other psychological conditions do we "treat" with social, medical and surgical affirmation? Should patients who believe they are non human animals be able to obtain medical treatments to modify their bodies to resemble either known or fantastical creatures? How are they legally recognized?

      "Gametes are binary."
      Not so fast.
      First, not everyone has gametes that can produce sperm OR eggs.
      Second, the notion that gamete size is THE indicator of sex is a recent model, and unlikely to hold for very long. After all, 100 years ago, it was *the appearance of primary sex characteristics* that was considered THE indicator of sex ("do they have an 'innie' or an 'outie'?")
      Then biologists discovered that there were far more exceptions than they had realized, and that model was discarded in favor of *allosomes* as THE indicator of sex ("do they have XX or XY allosomes?")
      Then, about 50 years ago, genetic biologists discovered that there were far more exceptions than they had realized (X, XXY, XYY, etc.), and _that_ model has been discarded in favor of *gamete size.* I have no doubt that within a decade or so, the gamete size model will _likewise_ be discarded in favor of something that gives a more nuanced understanding of differences. That is the way that scientific knowledge works.

I feel like those are fighting words these days, which is both hilarious and terrifying, lol.
      "Sex" is really not very nuanced at all. It is specifically about reproductive capacity and which reproductive role one's body is designed to play. Whether it actually does so is irrelevant, it's about the design. For example, putting large gametes into the sex with the penis doesn't make any sense, since small gametes couldn't get in to fertilize the ova and any miracle babies that somehow did get conceived couldn't get out. That doesn't mean that variations don't occur, just that there are two basic templates for mammalian bodies, and they evolved that way for a reason. That reason is the gametes that body configuration is designed to produce and utilize.
      People get so worked up about this, when it's actually very simple (except for the very tiny number of times that it isn't). Sexual reproduction evolved about a billion years ago and it seems to be working pretty well. If it ain't broke, evolution sees no reason to fix it. There are ONLY male and female human beings. But how we choose to express our male- or femaleness is entirely up to us.

    Sex and gender are synonyms, always have been. Gender THEORY proposes that they are different. But the actual definitions and use of the words have always been completely interchangeable with zero confusion. Sex and gender are scientific and biological terms. Masculinity and femininity are terms that can be maleable, but sex and gender quite literally are synonyms and always have been.

    • @LaOwlett

      Gender theory proposes that gender is a social construct, so a set of male and female societal norms/expectations... but if gender is a social construct, why are people being told they should try and change their biology? Their arguments are beyond illogical, they're nonsensical.

      But people use gender to mean something different. Like many words it has more than one definition. When a words usage changes its said to have a new definition. You can argue this SHOULDNT be going on, but to argue that it's not going on is silly

      @roberjohnsmith 2 місяці тому +9

      @MrThankeesai is there a group of people attempting to alter definitions and then living their life as if those definitions are the truth? Yes
      Does that make it true? No
      Also, I don't know how much you know about the English language an how definitions work. But definitions actually don't change over time. New definitions are gained, but it doesn't cancel out old ones, that's now how it works. If I use the word gender to mean "whatever I want to identify as', okay maybe you can argue that a new definition has been created, but it doesn't cancel out or nullify the original meaning snd definition of the word. It's not algebra where you add a plus to one side and it cancels out a negative on the other side. Every thesaurus and dictionary for about 500 years had sex and gender as synonyms until about 10 years ago a new definition has been added to gender. I reject the definition, that's a whole other story. But even if I accept that definition, the original definition is still the main definition of the word. That's how it works. And it is still listed in thesaurus as a synonym..

    • @roberjohnsmith
      @roberjohnsmith 2 місяці тому

      @MrThankeesai the scientists, yes, the scientists who invented trans surgery interchanged rhe words sex and gender. In fact, the first operations performed were called "sex change" surgery. Even the earliest proponents of modern gender theory, the literal scientists who were involved, never tried to claim sex and gender are 2 different things. Only gender philosophers and gender THEORY proponents claimed that gender snd sex are different. But the science, the definitions, the records all show them being synonyms.
      In fact, in Spanish and Latin and Italian, there is no word "sex", they only use the word gender. In scientific literature, it's all "gender". It's an older word rhan "sex", and it's always been a category of classification of biology. Gender coming from Latin gen-genus, meaning kind or origin.

My conviction is firm: Descartes' view is flawed. Our identity is not separate from our physical form; we embody our bodies. Consequently, our mental state is inseparable from our physical existence, which means the notion of being born in the wrong body or with the wrong sex is untenable. In public gender is synonymous with sex as theory is synonymous with idea. In psychology, it's useful for diagnosis to think of gender as a state of mind, but it's different from how gender is used by most people. As for theory, in scientific understanding, theory is the highest esteem an idea can be held to without making it an absolute, as all ideas are worth challenging.

    Almost all the reactions to the claims are scary and the reactions of the guy with the hat and the guy with the glasses are incoherent.
    They claim one who identifies as black is not black, but one who identifies as a woman is a woman. The guy with the glasses isn't sure to what degree one is a rhino if they identify as one.
    Are they afraid to say one can appropriate the race of a black person? Does a politically correct view make appropriating race wrong while condoning the adoption of womanhood?

    I wish you had followed up with:
    What would you do if you woke up to find your brain in the body of what you think is the body of a hot woman, but everyone else thinks it's the body of a man and hot enough as far as male bodies go, but certainly not a hot woman's body.

    Smoking hot females are not more (or less) female. If the fact that the hypothetical body is smoking hot sways you more to believe that a man would be a woman in that particular body, I would say that your position is more likely to be based in fantasy and perception rather than reality.
