ELP were incredible musicians. Carl Palmer is still kicking ass on the drums in his 70's. He's the best rock drummer I ever heard.

That Olymbic 8string bass also sounds great on Tarkus , Fanfare but I love that black fender jazz bass sound in The Sheriff with Keith's dirty hamond organ sound, King Crimsons 25 Century schizoid man and the Gibson ripper bass on Brain salad surgery. KILLER!

Of course I must add the 8string bass on live versions of Tarkus not the original studio version with the legendary black Fender jazz bass.

Keith Emerson pretty much wrote all the music for Pirates including the parts for the 27-pc orchestra. They were amazing. Try to picture the 3 of them doing this without the orchestra - and it still sounding phenomenal. My #1 band since 1970.

Thanks for playing this, Pope! Not only was this concert in Montreal a veritable Tour de Force but "Pirates" is a bloody masterpiece, displaying soaring music, outstanding vocals and superb lyrics played by three masters at the height of their collective musical and creative powers. On the face of the Mt Rushmore of rock/prog music, ELP's visage will be forever etched.

Graig lake's voice is so powerful. Palmer one of the best drumers around. And Emerson on the keyboards what can say. As time goes buy these masters of there trade are forgotten in the modern world. I still think the music of the seventies is the best. Overall.

Your reaction starting at 2:52 is awesome! That's a weird-azz part and it's Keith Emerson all the way, his trademark weirdness. Glad you liked it, for me this song is kind of the pinnacle of the '70s prog-rock movement. Incidentally I was at this show, my first concert, 14 years old with my big sister. One of my fav ELP songs ever. This tour was the epitome of the late 70s and 80s where everything was big. It was the era of arena rock, which may be gone forever. As others have noted, the tour imploded under the weight of the finances and logistics. This is a pretty good recording for its time. Thanks, Pope!

ELP were even more talented live than in studio. I had the pleasure of seeing this tour live without the orchestra and after seeing hundreds of headline bands since and before ELP is by far the show i have seen. There was nothing in this world better than ELP live with quad amps!!!

Keith Emerson,(keyboards) wrote this, and I want to say he arranged it but I'm not sure of that he also probably had some help from Peter Sinfield, but it's been so long since I've seen the liner notes, I'm just not sure of my facts anymore. Thanks for taking the time to post this, it was a welcome surprise.

Their final epic. The other epics you need to experience are Pictures At An Exhibition, Karn Evil 9 (all of it, there's 3 "impressions") and Tarkus. Saw them twice on the tour, once with the orchestra and once without. Keith did a great job on this by himself on that Yamaha GX-1 without the orchestra! Keith wrote the music, Greg and Pete Sinfield wrote the lyrics. A little different from From The Beginning, huh? :) I recommended it but I'm sure I'm not the only one.

This was the first time the band had planned an extensive tour with a full orchestra. This was the "Works" tour, "Works vol 1" featured orchestra on most of the album, solo works on 3 sides & the fourth the band together doing "Fanfare for the common man" & "Pirates". Financially the tour was a disaster due to the astronomical personnel & logistical costs. They were forced to ditch the orchestra & complete the tour as a 3 piece. As usual the maestro Emerson adapted the orchestral parts to keyboards. Recommend you check out more from "Works" , Keith Emerson's "Piano Concerto nbr 1" , Greg Lake's "Lend your love to me tonight" , "Hallowed be thy name" & "Closer to believing" & Carl Palmer's "Tank" & "The enemy God" , cheers

Keith Emerson wrote the music for the soundtrack of a movie about mercenaries called "The Dogs of War." The movie got scrapped, and Greg Lake collaborated with King Crimson lyricist, Pete Sinfield on the words. Part of their research took them Disney World. For my money, this is the greatest band ever. No three people have ever combined this much talent and this much weirdness. There are weird combinations aplenty out there. But ELP takes the cake. It is perhaps as divisive as pineapple pizza, but give me that three-piece any day. It was great fun to see you react to those fellows in their prime... and if you want to go with some timely ELP, check out "The Great Gates of Kiev" from this same concert. If you dig it, go to the studio recording they made they made for their box set. And if you want to meditate on the mess in Ukraine, listen to "Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman" Many ELP fans disregard this one -- I put it in my top five.
