I defended the SNES everytime it was "needed" and still love the console to death. But I never hated the Mega Drive/Genesis because it also had some sweet games. Nice topic for a video, love this channel.
Considering the fact that it was released first, the Sega Genesis version of "Earthworm Jim" is definitely superior to the SNES version, and the same thing can be said about "Boogerman: A Pick 'N Flick Adventure".
Mayor of Gaming We did not argue about consoles as kids. I had a Genesis and my friend had a SNES. Later I had an N64 and he had a Playstation. I later got a SNES and PS2 and caught up on the games I missed. Why would someone chose to miss a library of games being a fanboy?
No consoles were as different and distinct as the Snes/Gen. In my perspective it created a schism between gamers different personal preferences in game design, hardware, sound, and difficulty that still holds up today. That's why it's so contentious, it's about the tough and often frenetic, trial and error, score based arcade gaming experience employed by Sega with their Genesis (SoR, Shinobi, Bio Hazard Battle, Sonic, Super Hang On etc) versus the more forgiving, often exploratory, non-arcade experience offered by Nintendo and their Snes (SMW, Lttp, Kirby Super Star, Super M etc). People have a hard time embracing things that don't suit them, so instead of humbly accepting the stark difference between the consoles, commending their strengths and moving on, it's easier to blab that one approach or console is "superior" to the other. I prefer Sega's 1st and 3rd party 16-bit content but I'll be damned if I didn't also enjoy and appreciate what Nintendo was bringing to gaming. Rip Sega though lol.
I wanna add some extra Genesis games to the list. Mickey Mania (More levels and more voice samples) Toy Story (More levels) , Earthworm Jim (Better sound) , Jurassic Park Rampage Edition (Best 16-bit JP game), Contra Hard Corps (No crappy top down view levels), Mortal Kombat (Blood), Cool Spot(runs smoother, smaller sprites), NBA Jam (in game music), Fifa series(runs smoother), Aladdin (Even the developer of the SNES game says the Genesis version is the better game), Mega Turrican (better level disign), Sailor Moon (More levels), Flash back uncensored) Another World (uncensored).
I would add Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the Movie o this list. While the SNES version was a side scroller with two set tracks the players could move in, the Genesis version was a traditional beat 'em up with Power Rangers characters.
"You picked your side, or more accurately... you ended up with whatever your parents bought you and, from then on, you defended your console tooth and nail". Truer words haven't been said, drunk. That's the whole truth of everything. The first console I chose by myself was the PSP when I was 19 (nine years ago), and that's the only console I actually consider myself a fanboy of. But yeah, the genesis had plenty great exclusive games. Funnily enough, when a friend of my told me he had a cd with a hundred of genesis roms, the first thing I said was "do you have the michael jackson game??" The 90s were fun
lucky us who had both systems. My first own console was the Mega Drive while my dad has an SNES. So i was fortunate to play on both systems when they were still hot. I still kinda prefered the SNES because of the SPC Soundchip. Seriously, we often had it running through the AV receiver speakers and it blew you away. Especially when you played Axelay, Parodius, Unirally, Super Metroid or the JRPGs like Secret of Evermore.
Apparently, Blast Processing was REAL. Depends on the game, of course. The faster clock speed of the Genesis was better for some games, while the SNES' advanced hardware features were better for other games.
As Ivan helpfully mentioned on my Patreon page, I could've very easily included Mortal Kombat here as well, since that's much better on Genesis. But, that game's just not worth playing today, and if you want to play something from the MK series, you're better off with MK2 on SNES.
I wouldn't exactly go for the SNES version of MKII. Sure it brought back the blood and gore but it also has a slight input delay that the arcade and Genesis versions didn't have. I grew up with the Genesis version so not having the characters do what I want as soon as I put in the command in the SNES version really through me off.
SNES drunk yep MK2 was leaps and bounds better in every way on SNES. Background details, music, sound effects, ect. I own both and there is just no comparison. Would choose MK 1 on Genesis over SNES though.
Agreed. But in retrospect, I think we can also agree the quantity of quality titles on the SNES was generally higher. At the time, though? Take your pick.
ben owen Hey it’s been awhile. Welcome back! It looks like you’ve deleted some comments but I see you’re keeping that lil bitch award sparkling. I’m so glad you’re still around bud.
Exclusive games that I liked more on Genesis than SNES (they are totally diferent): - Aladdin (Virgin game) - Contra (Hard Corps) - Castlevania (Bloodlines) - Batman & Robin (CT game) - Sparkster (RKA 2) (just to be clear: the SNES counterparts are great games too... just not my favorites)
I had Thunder Force III for the Genesis. My dad bought it for me at a pawn store for ten bucks. I spent so many hours playing that game because it was so awesome. Didn't even know there was a SNES version.
nice video - as a kid I had a SNES but never felt that I had to trash the other consoles, I always wanted a Genesis and loved it when I could play one at a friends house or check out the Sega CD before any other systems had CD drives at that point. I bought gaming magazines that covered all the systems because I was just interested in everything that was out there. Today I feel lucky to collect for Sega consoles and play the titles I missed out on as a kid, but I still like the old Nintendo consoles and I dont understand why people want to trash one or the other
Me too, Nintendo and Sega had a fierce dispute here in Brazil but even though I loved my SNES I'd always go to my friend's house to play Sonic and Golden Axe.
I think what drove kids to trash the other console was their inability to have access to it - basically jealousy. In my case, my cousins had Genesis and I had SNES and we took turns playing at each others houses constantly, so there was no real reason to develop fanboyism. Although there was definitely a lot of friendly rivalry and "mine is better" type arguments.
People who complain about a PS4 game being better than XBO (for example), have no idea what it's like to REALLY have console differences. 4K vs Checkerboard 4K!? Hmmpf!!
Thunder Force IV has such an amazing soundtrack! Almost unreal. Others headbang inducing Mega Drive soundtracks are Musha, Battle Mania Daiginjō and Road Rash 3! Best listened on real hardware as Mega Drive emulators aren't 100% accurate (or if you want online, check out DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL channel for real hardware recordings).
I wish people would stop saying the Super Nintendo hardware was not suited to shoot em ups when it clearly was as demonstrated by Super Aleste (Space Megaforce). Shoot em up programmers simply weren't competent enough with the hardware available most of the time when working on the SNES. The Mega Drive had the advantage of using the same CPU the Amiga and Atari ST had been using for years before that so there was no shortage of highly experienced programmers who understood how to get the best out of it. Also i'm surprised Aladdin wasn't mentioned (even though the SNES game is very good as well).
Christ, just how fucking mint was Thunderforce 3? Still a classic to this day. Yep, the Megadrive was definitely the king of Shoot 'Em Ups & Sports. Both superb consoles.
When you look at the Thunder Force III vs Thunder Spirits segments in the video the thing that really stand out is the Genesis superior resolution! (320 pixels width while the SNES is stuck in 256) Also the colors looks more vibrant and of course the game is much smoother.
@@buckroger6456 Think it's known as "Thunder Spirits" on the SNES, and has some different levels (one of the ports does, but not sure if it's the SNES one or not)
Man as childs we battled a lot between my friends and i on which console was better. SNES team pointed some color stuffs and we Genesis crew used to rely on heavy tittles and some blood restriction on Snes (like the known-by-all Mortal Kombat). At the end of the day, here in Argentina Sega won the competition just by being cheaper (after some times some "Genesis clones" came up really cheap) and with cheaper games. If you buy a SNES, you'll end up with Mario Land and just a few other games since they would be massively expensive in comparisson with Genesis games. i will nevertheless admit that one friend back in the day sold a Megadrive in order to purchase a SNES and he was very happy with that
Great episode, and well put together despite being an old topic. There are tons of games to add to the debate, and I think we all would love to see another related episode in the future.
I loved the Strike games (Desert, Jungle & Urban) so much as a kid that I did a temporary console swap with a Genesis owning neighbour to be able to play them more. When I finally bought SNES copies later on in life they just weren’t the same - had a clunky feel and the sound (which was awesome) was off. Don’t think these games are exactly regarded as classics, but they spring to mind first for me in terms of being better on Sega.
I dug this video. Like that you keep finding new ways to look at these games, and I definitely agree with all of these. This is sort of my beat on my channel, so there are a couple games you didn't mention that you might want to look at if you ever do a part two! Saturday Night Slammasters on the Genesis lets you use the two boss characters and includes a Death Match option not in the SNES version. It also has a couple frames of animation for characters that the SNES port is missing. The SNES port has the 4-player mode, though, but that's only an advantage if you have four players. WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game is missing two characters on the SNES, but honestly, the 16-bit ports are pretty lacking when it comes to that game. Captain America and the Avengers looks a bit better on the SNES, but it plays like utter trash, the Genesis version is super fun and very close to the arcade in terms of playability. Spider-Man/X-Men and Wolverine: Adamantium Rage are both bad games on both platforms, but the Genesis versions of both are better than the SNES.
This is why we like Snesdrunk, a normal everyday guy who likes games, not just...one particular console that has "some" games on it. Keep up the awesome impartial content man, you're great.
Thankfully, my brothers and I were fortunate enough to have the SNES and the Genesis. We had it pretty good, and were extremely lucky because we basically got every new game system upon release. Then we got older and everything went to sh!t. Now life is a nightmare, but hey, at least I had an awesome childhood lol I personally favor the SNES over the genesis. I probably played both equally.. like 24/7, I was playing one of the 2. But for some reason I just favor the SNES. I think i have more nostalgia and memories of games like super Mario world, Zelda, earthbound, secret of mana, illusion of Gaia, Ken Griffey Jrs Major League Baseball, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, Metal Warriors, Uniracers, etc etc .. but there are also plenty of Genesis games that were amazing and gave me so many fond memories. I don’t understand why people fight over which system is better. It’s silly. They’re both fu€king amazing. It’s so immature and corny to argue over which is “better”. Your opinion is your opinion..it’s a subjective question and depends on each individual’s taste and experiences with each system. Let’s just settle on, they’re both great!
You forgot the biggest game: James Pond 2 on Genesis was better than Super James Pond in every way except the music. Even the more colorful graphics looked stretched and fuzzy on the SNES. Can't save Christmas like that.
I think most Electronic Arts games were best on Sega. They seemed to be able to get the most out of the hardware and struggled with the slow SNES processor.
It’s weird but personally I never took sides in the console wars, there was just so much great stuffs coming on both sides. Now looking back sure seems like there’s much more Snes games that stands the tests of time but I still like the megadrive as well.
Sparkster was different on both systems and I felt the Genesis version was better overall. Had better level and boss design. Better variety of enemies. Was more challenging. Even though there were only 5 main levels, they were pretty long. I prefer the way the rocket pack worked on the snes version though.
Different games, but I'd said the game's concept is better suited for the Genesis faster processor. The SNES game, being great, looks to me like the less impressive of the bunch.
SNES Sparkster is the more polished game, Konami A-Team did it (after that Nintendo whined seeing how good Rocket Knight Adventures was) while it's pretty obvious that it's Konami B, maybe even C-Team that did the Mega Drive game unlike Rocket Knight Adventures which had Konami involved at 100%. Konami weren't always at their full on Sega systems but despite this most of their releases on them still kickass, because of the great hardwares and also because Konami. Symphony of the Night on Saturn is another example, it's said that Konami even let a note somewhere where they apologize for the poorer than expected quality of the conversion. But they made up for this with lot of exclusive content and some people actually prefer this version over the Playstation due to this. As for Sparkster MD, despite being quite lazily made, apparently it's still a pretty good game. Now if it's better than the SNES version? I can't say yet, but dat 1st stage music, freaking amazing!!!
How was the Snes version more polished? Most of the enemies had the same attack pattern, which was just run up to you and jump towards you. There was hardly any enemy variety, other than costume changes the wolf enemies had depending on the stage. The obstacles most stages had I felt didn't really push the limits of what could have been done with them. The bosses and mini bosses were mostly easy and didn't really put full use of the rocket pack or require technique like the Genesis games did. (The stage 7 boss was the hardest because of how random it's attack patterns were and you had to beat him as soon as possible or you were defenseless) How was the Genesis version lazy, if that game was more challenging and bosses were more carefully designed in how to defeat them? It's almost as well made as Rocket Knight Adventures. Though I didn't really like the item slot machine since it seemed most of the time you got a bomb. The only real advantages I saw the snes version have were better, more detailed graphics, more colors, better sound effects and arguably better music since both games shared some of the same songs, but had a different mood to them depending on the stage.
From what I've seen, SNES Sparkster is at least visually more polished which makes it looks like Konami A-Team did it instead of the MD version. But I'm glad to learn about all the gameplay differences that you pointed out! Also it's very possible that sometime a B or C-Team does a better job than an A one. You make me really want to play this game now! :) Also the Mega Drive game runs in higher resolution which makes the visuals crisper and with a wider playfield. And about music, I only compared the tune from the 1st stage and I much prefer it on Mega Drive!
Am I alone in thinking that the sprite animation in the SNES Taz mania looks amazing and in synchronization with the ground you're running on, unlike the racing games it is similar to?
i was EXTREMELY lucky to have one of my best friends live 4 houses down from me; he had dozens of Genesis games & i had a snes. so luckily, i experienced all the popular Genesis games during that time period. i still look back fondly on the hours & hours we spent playing Toe Jam & Earl, Joe Montana: STF2 & Mutant League hockey. I think back & realize that id never have even played Genesis had he not been around... ahh memories
NBA Jam. The SNES didn’t have the in-game music, and the announcer sounded lethargic. I never thought “Boomshakalaka” could sound so boring, but the SNES version did it.
Never understood that whole tribalism surrounding consoles. I guess that just wasn't a thing over here in Europe. I happily played NES, SNES, Master System, Mega Drive, Amstrad, C64, PC, ... back in the day. Whatever was available wherever I happened to be at. I guess it's probably because back in the 90's, over here we had more civilised rules surrounding advertising. You were supposed to advertise your product, not smear the competitor's. So the "Sega does what Nintendon't" and related commercials where Sega took a stab at Nintendo and tried to make it look lame? Just weren't possible over here. Which means companies had a lot less to work with when it came to militarising impressionable youth in their war against economic competitors.
as someone who grew up in the mid 2000's with a genesis, and later a snes, I have major nostalgia for both, and while I always prefer the genesis, your channel has been eye opening, and in cases where you cover genesis games, or the SNES games I do own, it always gives me this feeling of nostalgia, rock on dude
I'm one of those that on this day liked what the SNES had more but there is no shame in what the Genesis had. Phantasy Star, Monster World, Ghouls n' Ghosts, Sonic, Castlevania Bloodlines, Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Gunstar Heros, Beyond Oasis, and a few other things stand out for me still. Sadly this list you brought up though means nothing to me cause I really don't care for sports games, movie tie ins, and shooters. But meh, everyone has their preferences.
Clint There needs to be more love for the OG Phantasy Star Games. Phantasy Star 4 was easily on par with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6, IMO, and I even preferred the story to either of it's exemplary contemporaries (which is kind of unfair since CT was a new IP and FF games are each self-contained at this point, while PS4 was ending a multi-console-generation sci-fi/fantasy epic that spanned millennia).
I Loved playing Jurassic Park on my Genesis and while I didn't play Taz-Mania I did play Taz in Escape from Mars and it was great too. Overall you really hit the highlights with this video.
Born in 1980, I never saw or got into a heated console war/argument as a kid/teen. Though, I'll admit that all my friends only had an SNES while I was the spoiled kid who literally had everything. Growing up I had the NES, SNES, Genesis and Turbo Duo. Later I had the Saturn, PS1, and N64. The greatest mistake of my young life was trading my Duo for a Jaguar at a local game store.
As always, a lovely video. I have to agree on all of these. I did miss some games here, but then again... you can't do them all. Maybe for another episode in the future? Games like Mickey Mania or Alien3 for example. Keep on with the good work. And yeah... Nintendo and Sega, they both have awesome stuff.
Finally someone talks about Madden and NHL on Genesis. The sports games on Genesis were far better than SNES back then. I had both. Madden and NBA games were slow on SNES
SNES has some great games for sure. DK Country 1-3, Zelda ALttP, SMW + All Stars, SM RPG, Lion King, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, FF IV (II), etc. However I personally grew up with Genesis and have found more overall games I enjoy than on SNES. They're both great systems though. I'll never neglect a game just because it's not on my favorite or preferred system. ✌
Hey SNES drunk, it makes me giddy whenever you mention U.N. Squadron. It's my favorite game of all time (Thanks Dad!) I'm a fan of Steel Empire in just the same way, and it would be VERY neat to see your top 20 Shoot 'Em Ups. (30 if you so choose as you speak of a lot more existing)
IIRC, the Motorola CPU in the Genesis is twice the speed of the CPU in SNES, which was the reason for the “blast processing” marketing catch phrase. SNES had some very cool hardware acceleration functions in the Mode 7, and its 30k+ color palette, vs 64 in the Genesis, simply made gorgeous looking games, perfect for slower paced RPGs.
Quite a lot, if you are not biased. Especially if you play them as intended, on original hardware and on a CRT. SNES looks WAAAAAY better than Genesis when upscaled, thanks to the larger number of colors that made the games rely much less on dithering, which is virtually unnoticeable on a CRT, tho. Most platformers and action games that were released on both systems ran better on Genesis thanks to the higher clock, which allowed for smoother animations and better handling of sprites. Multiplatform games ofter have more frames of animation on Genesis and thus feel quicker and more responsive. A couple examples that come to mind are Mickey Mania and Earthworm Jim. Now, if we are talking games that were completely different on each system, like Aladdin, that's another discussion. By the way, I own both consoles and still play them currently. They are both excellent systems with incredible games.
Thank you so much. I am a diehard RoboCop fan and was disappointed in the SNES titles... the SEGA one totally rocks! Man is he overpowered, it’s great. We really appreciate you!
I didn’t have to deal with the console war. I was an older kid with a job at the end of the nes days. I bought all 3 snes, genesis, and tb16. Turbografx 16 is one of the most criminally underrated systems ever.
6:00 Not to split hairs, but that's a clip from Madden '95 (which is indeed borderline unplayable), not Madden '96 (easily the best of the SNES Madden games, still fun to play even to this day). That aside, this is a great list with excellent points.
I never understood the trench wars. Primitive if you ask me. It's like saying I only read books from, say, France. That's stupid. I had to choose like most of us, but if money hadn't been the primary obstacle, then I would have bought any system. Still true today.
What I loved most about this era was ports had to be modified to accommodate the particular system. Often this would lead to entirely different games across platforms and you would want to play them both. One great example you could have used here is the Beavis and Butthead game.
As a child I had mega drive as a 7 year old and was unknowingly a massive fan kid. A few years later I ggot a snes and turned to that system, still had both at the time. I preferred the consoles for exclusives definitely and rarely had cross platform games but the ones I did I really really preferred jurrasic park on snes and Aladdin on snes but then again I preferred taz mania and mega swiv. It was a weird time in gaming and was so so full of rivalry. Now as an adult I'm bored of the 300+ megadrive/genesis collections and half backed mini systems sega bang out. I would love to see a snes classic collection on switch that would be amazing.
I grew up with super nintendo but i love the sega genesis too. I had a few friends that had the genesis and i loved going to there house to play it and they'd play super nintendo at my house. We never argued about which system is better we were just having fun
Genesis for life! Super Nintendo for babies!! Honestly I never experienced this. Most of my friends couldn’t afford more than one console a generation. To me it meant missing out on 3-4 games just to get the other one so I picked one and stayed with it. But no one was up in arms about it.
I'd love a more in depth look at the Thunder Force series. Very underrated. The US version of Thunder Force IV on Genesis (Lightening Force) was one of my favorite games to play as a kid.
NHL and NBA Live also, and since you are British you have to give credit to the excelent Sensible Soccer, better on the Mega Drive too. International Superstar Soccer, the best 16bit football game IMO, was better on the SNES, tho.
ojideagu depends what perspective you like. It looked better, with bigger and more detailed sprite, but personally I enjoyed the isometric nature of FIFA.
Always grew up a SNES kid but the older I've gotten the more ice realized the Genesis is def legit. Used to think it was a cheap alternative until i started playing it about 10 years ago
Interesting, when I looked into Doom Troopers after getting a copy cheap the majority of opinions I saw were the opposite. Haven't tried the genesis version though. Agree with all the others. Good video!
I never liked the Genesis because of the controller. My friend had one before I had my SNES and even then, I found the A-B-C buttons right next to each other to be weird. When I got my SNES, the controller fit my hands like a glove and felt more intuitive.
I love both Jurrasic Parks, but as soon as I got my Genesis (I didn't start collecting until a year or two ago) I was on ebay ordering that version, still haven't got around to getting the one for my SNES though, but I will one day.
Thanks for watching? My pleasure! Thanks for doing... Agree with everything... Except for the Snes Jurassic Park: for me, the little rpg-adventure elements made it very interesting, and the different camera when into buildings was a great idea... and a great graphic effort combinating everything! Moreover, you can save your game nowadays with emulators. Apart from that, SnesDrunk, have you ever checked Equinox or Young Merlin for Snes? I was wondering. Because they are two of my all-time-forgotten favorites. Great losers. Little bizarre gems. I like rare ones.
I love all the SNES fanboys here. Sure, the Sega Genesis didn't have as many colors as the Super Nintendo, nor did it have the Mode 7 chip, but it had a faster processor and a wider screen resolution. It could leave the Super Nintendo in the dust when it came to fast paced games.
Honestly, I think Gradius III gets a pass for two reasons; 1) it was a release title (so, devs didn't have time to really learn the SNES hardware and how to maximize it) 2) I've played versions where the slowdown was fixed, and holy crap, it is a lot harder, and 3) the ARCADE version had slowdown- sure, there were changes from the arcade to the SNES, but that wasn't one them
Back in 91' my uncle got his hands on an ultra rare copy of Super Mario for the Genesis. Ended up being just a cartridge with a bunch of spaghetti taped to it
Two games I remember I remember very well being so much on megadrive were robocop vs terminator and Aladdin. Both games were fantastic on megadrive and just ok in snes.
Agreed! Nice video. As you pointed out, Genesis had a faster processor, and higher resolution. It was MUCH better for intense action games. I owned a SNES back in its heyday, and it felt slow and gimmicky. Mode 7 and the FX Chip did almost nothing to improve the overall experience (besides F-Zero, which is undeniably good for it's time). To sum up what makes SNES good: Eye candy, more colors, a couple nice rpg's (we all know what they are and it's getting old), Contra 3, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Zelda 3, Super Metroid, Mortal Kombat 2, Super Mario World, MegaMan X...and I'm out of nice things to say. Genesis wins. NES is still my favorite Nintendo system. The level of innovation was considerably higher, especially for the time period. Yes, Nintendo monopolized the market, but the consumer enjoyed the end result. The SNES didn't enjoy the same advantage, so Sega enjoyed the end result. More games, more publishers, and a nearly 7-year span. Overzealous SNES fanboys hopefully have finally seen the light, especially after watching this video :)
I feel like I'm the weird person who actually really likes the SNES Jurassic Park. I actually don't like the Genesis one at all. But to this day I always like to revisit the SNES version. I get lost, I stumble around the FPS sections. But the music, and exploration is just fun to me. But you are right it desperately needs a save feature. The only time I've ever beaten it was with save states. Took a bit over 4 hours with me going into it blind to finish it and that was me as an adult. As a kid I probably would have taken much longer.
I never had an allegiance towards one system or another, I went with what I thought was the system that offered the best games at that time and had the most potential. Going from Atari 2600 to ColecoVision to Nes to Genesis to PlayStation and so on. I wanted a Snes bad but I already had a Genesis so I would rent out the system from the video store with games to catch all the great games. Remember, when the Genesis was released it was in direct competition with the TurboGrafx, not the Snes.
I will always be on team SNES but I will say this, I liked Contra Hard Corps way more than Contra 3 and I love the music for the Genesis when its done right, it can either sound like a badass rock song like with the road rash series or it can be fast and catchy like with the sonic games.
Good on you for liking both consoles. You don't have to dislike something to like something else. You can like both. In this case, SEGA genesis and SNES. Some people aren't intelligent enough to understand such a simple concept, I suppose.
I bought the SNES version of Robocop VS Terminator after playing my friend's copy on his Mega Drive. I think it was less than a week until I traded it in for A Link To The Past. That was a good choice.
That still boils down to "who had the better childhood". The world would be (marginally) a less interesting place if either of these eras hadn't happened. Be glad that there are all-time great games from both the 4th and 5th generations.
nimaiiikun I think that the pinnacle of console, sprite based, 2D gaming holds up better today than the beginning of 3-D gaming. A lot of old PSX, Saturn and N64 games just do not hold up. They look like shit and play like shit. Many Genesis and SNES games still hold up pretty well against modern sprite based games.
As a kid I had a Megadrive and I really loved it but I also really wanted an SNES too. Unfortunately Nintendo flopped big time in my country so I never did get one. I have both now and I really couldn't pick between the two as to which one was better they are both great consoles :)
I forgot to add one: from what I've heard, Genesis Boogerman is better than SNES but I haven't tried that version. Not sure if it's good enough in general to make the list but it's an ok platformer.
PART TWO: ua-cam.com/video/g6Nip8jOy7A/v-deo.html
Must suck not having anyone like your comment.....
Sad thing is, I finished Tazmania on the SNES and even more sadly you get nothing for all your work.
you talk about genesis shootemups, but never say the words Bio Hazard Battle ... one of the best shooters and sound tracks ever.
Good to know. Haven't played all these yet, but we agree with you on the 1st three games.
Console Wars do a gamecube vs dreamcast (sonic adventure vs sonic adventure DX)
I defended the SNES everytime it was "needed" and still love the console to death. But I never hated the Mega Drive/Genesis because it also had some sweet games. Nice topic for a video, love this channel.
Considering the fact that it was released first, the Sega Genesis version of "Earthworm Jim" is definitely superior to the SNES version, and the same thing can be said about "Boogerman: A Pick 'N Flick Adventure".
I was just thinking of booger man and then read your comment!
Man, people still bicker over SNES and Genesis? Both systems did some amazing things, but differently!
Rip Sega though lol.
he did make some interesting points though.
Nah, apparently they are more like social network players than normal game players. Soldiers of console wars doing their jobs.
Mayor of Gaming until the day I die. I'll NEVER give up the fight!
I fucking love the sass at the beginning of this video and the fact that you called him out specifically. Great content as always, SNESdrunk.
Jurassic Park was killer on Megadrive
I had the option to buy Taz-mania or Mega Man X back in the day. I'm so glad I chose Mega Man X
I wanna add some extra Genesis games to the list.
Mickey Mania (More levels and more voice samples) Toy Story (More levels) , Earthworm Jim (Better sound) , Jurassic Park Rampage Edition (Best 16-bit JP game), Contra Hard Corps (No crappy top down view levels), Mortal Kombat (Blood), Cool Spot(runs smoother, smaller sprites), NBA Jam (in game music), Fifa series(runs smoother), Aladdin (Even the developer of the SNES game says the Genesis version is the better game), Mega Turrican (better level disign), Sailor Moon (More levels), Flash back uncensored) Another World (uncensored).
beavis and butt-head was way better on sega
Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3: A complete broken and buggy mess, but slightly less awful than the SNES ports
I had no idea there was a Sailor Moon game on the Genesis.
@@samgibson6287 Um, no. Beavis and Butt-Head was garbage on Sega. But to be fair, it was pretty much garbage on the SNES too...
Funnily enough, when a friend of my told me he had a cd with a hundred of genesis roms, the first thing I said was "do you have the michael jackson game??"
The 90s were fun
lucky us who had both systems.
I had the Mega Drive but anyone slagging off the SNES is a twat
Both had pros and cons
The SNES is a great console
Apparently, Blast Processing was REAL. Depends on the game, of course. The faster clock speed of the Genesis was better for some games, while the SNES' advanced hardware features were better for other games.
I rarely experienced slowdown on the Sega Genesis.

As Ivan helpfully mentioned on my Patreon page, I could've very easily included Mortal Kombat here as well, since that's much better on Genesis. But, that game's just not worth playing today, and if you want to play something from the MK series, you're better off with MK2 on SNES.
I love how the video posts today but you wrote that comment two weeks ago :)
Ken Williams Patreon my friend, patreon
I wouldn't exactly go for the SNES version of MKII. Sure it brought back the blood and gore but it also has a slight input delay that the arcade and Genesis versions didn't have. I grew up with the Genesis version so not having the characters do what I want as soon as I put in the command in the SNES version really through me off.
I so read this in your voice
SNES drunk yep MK2 was leaps and bounds better in every way on SNES. Background details, music, sound effects, ect. I own both and there is just no comparison. Would choose MK 1 on Genesis over SNES though.
Come on guys both the SNES and Genesis were great.
Agreed. But in retrospect, I think we can also agree the quantity of quality titles on the SNES was generally higher. At the time, though? Take your pick.
But gotta admit SNES was better overall
Ben Owen1 LMAO Snes won the bit war. You won the Lil Bitch award though. Congrats 🏆
Ben Owen1 SNES games and console sales exceeded SEGA’s. Keep riding that sega cawk.
ben owen Hey it’s been awhile. Welcome back! It looks like you’ve deleted some comments but I see you’re keeping that lil bitch award sparkling. I’m so glad you’re still around bud.
Exclusive games that I liked more on Genesis than SNES (they are totally diferent):
- Aladdin (Virgin game)
- Contra (Hard Corps)
- Castlevania (Bloodlines)
- Batman & Robin (CT game)
- Sparkster (RKA 2)
(just to be clear: the SNES counterparts are great games too... just not my favorites)
i honestly like the SNES versions of Castlevania more
why? fuck limited continues that's why
@@dmas7749 lol
There's also Pit Fighter. The Genesis version is faithful to the arcade original gameplay wise while the SNES version is... well, SNES Pit Fighter.
Had to scroll too far down for this.
Even the Arcade version of Pit Fighter sucked.... Comparing the home conversions is like trying to pick out which pile of puss looks tastier....
hahahah so graphic, so right
Well, that's like saying Bubsy 3D is faithful to the quality we expected from it.
Axel Janes yeah. I liked that. But arcade and SNES? *VOMITS*
I had Thunder Force III for the Genesis. My dad bought it for me at a pawn store for ten bucks. I spent so many hours playing that game because it was so awesome. Didn't even know there was a SNES version.
Thunder Spirits on the SNES... some levels from TFII (the side scrollers) plus TFIII. If I don't have it I need it just to be a completist.
nice video - as a kid I had a SNES but never felt that I had to trash the other consoles, I always wanted a Genesis and loved it when I could play one at a friends house or check out the Sega CD before any other systems had CD drives at that point.
Although there was definitely a lot of friendly rivalry and "mine is better" type arguments.
combination of jealousy and desire to have some kind of identity
Great video! Bravo for having the balls to make this video. I'm a big Sega fanboy and appreciate your honesty. Now do one for the SNES 😁
SHMUP Master balls...? These games are objectively better
SECONDQUEST Yes but very few people on the internet are objective. So I congratulate him for that.
most go by what the biased avgn says
Avgn is not biased. He may prefer Nintendo but when he thinks that a game is better(in his own opinion )he says it like Contra
People who complain about a PS4 game being better than XBO (for example), have no idea what it's like to REALLY have console differences. 4K vs Checkerboard 4K!? Hmmpf!!
Aladdin & NBA Jam are the first 2 that come to mind.
Mortal Kombat rounds out my top 3, figured that was a given...like the NHL games which I forgot (suppressed?) were even available on the snes
I first headbanged to my Genesis, so it's very special to me. ( shout outs to Thunder Force 4 )
best rock and metal themes on the 16bits!
Elemental Master
I never knew that thunder force 3 was on the snes.
@@buckroger6456 Think it's known as "Thunder Spirits" on the SNES, and has some different levels (one of the ports does, but not sure if it's the SNES one or not)
@@falksi3182 the video talks about it a tiny bit. I just never knew this as a kid back in the days. I just thought it was a Sega only franchise.
3:48 Donkey Kontra
spj That was good one!
That's a nice thing to say, thanks
Retro Soul is one of the coolest guys around ;)
Thanks so are you!
Hihi ^^ thank you! I became addicted to games comparisons as you might have noticed :p also, 16 and 32-bit for the win!
That's a good one
I think most Electronic Arts games were best on Sega. They seemed to be able to get the most out of the hardware and struggled with the slow SNES processor.
It's quite a feat when you know they reverse engineered their own Genesis/Megadrive development kit.
Also the Mega Drive game runs in higher resolution which makes the visuals crisper and with a wider playfield. And about music, I only compared the tune from the 1st stage and I much prefer it on Mega Drive!
I really recommend playing Sparkster on Genesis/Mega Drive since it's a very well made game. :)
But the SNES version of RoboCop vs Terminator has that cool and unique case that it came in. If you're a collector, that's definitely one to get.
Robocop v Terminator theme was my high school cell phone ringtone for the longest time. Love that Genesis music!
Nice rebuke at the beginning of the video. Gave me a good chuckle.
Great video... I still think this channel is underrated... The production value is great with excellent insight...
Am I alone in thinking that the sprite animation in the SNES Taz mania looks amazing and in synchronization with the ground you're running on, unlike the racing games it is similar to?
Great list. I would add Desert Strike, Jungle Strike and Urban Strike to this list.
They're on Part 2 which will post in a couple weeks
i was EXTREMELY lucky to have one of my best friends live 4 houses down from me; he had dozens of Genesis games & i had a snes. so luckily, i experienced all the popular Genesis games during that time period. i still look back fondly on the hours & hours we spent playing Toe Jam & Earl, Joe Montana: STF2 & Mutant League hockey. I think back & realize that id never have even played Genesis had he not been around... ahh memories
I would have picked Mega Turrican and Ys3 as well. The best thing today is to have as many console as you can and appreciate everything you can.
Clint
There needs to be more love for the OG Phantasy Star Games.
+lnsflare1 Tbh, I got bored of the Phantasy Star games rather quickly.
I Loved playing Jurassic Park on my Genesis and while I didn't play Taz-Mania I did play Taz in Escape from Mars and it was great too. Overall you really hit the highlights with this video.
You too have a great rest of your day! Thanks for the cool video.
I had a SNESbut had to admit Robocop vs terminator for sega was amazing
"PRESUMABLY" lmao
Finally someone talks about Madden and NHL on Genesis. The sports games on Genesis were far better than SNES back then. I had both. Madden and NBA games were slow on SNES
True but sports on consoles suck. Game not worth anything
Not to mention the Micro Machines series
Great vid dude. Always love comparisons from the all classic sega vs nintendo era. Its the best. And i played and loved both
Thank you so much. I am a diehard RoboCop fan and was disappointed in the SNES titles... the SEGA one totally rocks! Man is he overpowered, it’s great. We really appreciate you!
Alladin also on SNES was great. But on Sega, it was much better.
Hellfire was one of my favorite Genesis shooters.
Indeed, one of the earlier shooters for MD was also one of its best...
I bought the TG-CD version
I didn’t have to deal with the console war. I was an older kid with a job at the end of the nes days. I bought all 3 snes, genesis, and tb16. Turbografx 16 is one of the most criminally underrated systems ever.
Loved the video man! Thanks for the insight!
Spot on.
Great topic. I'm gonna add Earthworm Jim to this list.
SlyBeast Yes, especially the Sega CD version as it had extra levels and obviously CD quality music.
SlyBeast Yep Earthworm Jim 1 definitely for Genesis. Earthworm Jim 2 I always go SNES.
Now Earthworm Jim 2, that's Saturn all the way for me. That soundtrack is just rock-solid.
I did play that port years later and it's got great music but I'm nostalgic for the Genesis port.
Snes Earthworm Jim 2 is waaay better.
I was lucky that my friend down the street had a snes while I had the genesis so we never missed out on the great games that each system had.
I'd love a more in depth look at the Thunder Force series. Very underrated. The US version of Thunder Force IV on Genesis (Lightening Force) was one of my favorite games to play as a kid.
I hope you make another one of these. I like toy story more on the genesis than the snes.
The FIFA games were also much better on the megadrive. Although this wouldn't of been a big deal in America it was massive in the uk.
NHL and NBA Live also, and since you are British you have to give credit to the excelent Sensible Soccer, better on the Mega Drive too. International Superstar Soccer, the best 16bit football game IMO, was better on the SNES, tho.
ISS Deluxe was definitely better on SNES and the best football game
I thought real 16bit euro Soccer fans were playing Sensible Soccer.
ojideagu depends what perspective you like. It looked better, with bigger and more detailed sprite, but personally I enjoyed the isometric nature of FIFA.
Sports games are all shit. Go outside if you want to play Sports.
AestheticBiker82 😂 👎🏻
Ended up being just a cartridge with a bunch of spaghetti taped to it
Rusty Beaver the rigitoni version is better
He probably mistook it for Mario's Supper
I got super worried when you started your sentence with "My uncle got his hands on"
@@24magiccarrotonly if his uncle is Jimmy Kimmel.
Two games I remember I remember very well being so much on megadrive were robocop vs terminator and Aladdin. Both games were fantastic on megadrive and just ok in snes.
Great video! You missed Super Turrican/ Mega Turrican. And Earth Worm Jim.
Agreed!
I did have to choose just one game system. I saved my money & ended up buying both the Genesis & SNES. Each system had games that I really liked.
Are you the Doug Demuro of video games? Lol. Great video man. Thank you
I never had an allegiance towards one system or another, I went with what I thought was the system that offered the best games at that time and had the most potential.
This is a good video, but about the SHMUP part:
There are SA-1 versions of certain SHMUP games like Gradius 3 which don't slow down
I will always be on team SNES but I will say this,
I liked Contra Hard Corps way more than Contra 3
and I love the music for the Genesis when its done right, it can either sound like a badass rock song like with the road rash series or it can be fast and catchy like with the sonic games.
You should check Console Wars, is a channel where they compare games released for both genesis and nintendo or similar games.
Good on you for liking both consoles. You don't have to dislike something to like something else. You can like both. In this case, SEGA genesis and SNES. Some people aren't intelligent enough to understand such a simple concept, I suppose.
I am happy you didnt mention aladin since to me both are such different games and both real good and lovely their own ways.
I was always a sega fanboy but snes i think was more capable console.l loved them both.
The Genesis plays faster that's why it was so awesome.
I bought the SNES version of Robocop VS Terminator after playing my friend's copy on his Mega Drive.
I think it was less than a week until I traded it in for A Link To The Past.
That was a good choice.
Sega Genesis was better in my opinion but both are great.
exactly right. we shouldn't argue which 16 bit console was best. instead we should argue the 16 bit era > the 32 bit era
That still boils down to "who had the better childhood". The world would be (marginally) a less interesting place if either of these eras hadn't happened. Be glad that there are all-time great games from both the 4th and 5th generations.
nimaiiikun which console was best is arguable, which era was best isn't.
nimaiiikun I think that the pinnacle of console, sprite based, 2D gaming holds up better today than the beginning of 3-D gaming. A lot of old PSX, Saturn and N64 games just do not hold up. They look like shit and play like shit. Many Genesis and SNES games still hold up pretty well against modern sprite based games.
soooo right
As a kid I had a Megadrive and I really loved it but I also really wanted an SNES too.
