Dawn Celeste Ashley - Sleight of Fox
Hello UA-cam subscribers... you may have subscribed when I was uploading Devo covers, DS-10 tracks or experimenting on my MS-20 or MicroKorg XL. Thank you for subscribing all those years ago but I also understand if you now unsubscribe! This is a new recording that I am rather proud of, I hope you enjoy it.
'Sleight of Fox' can be listened to, downloaded and purchased via Bandcamp: dawncelesteashley.bandcamp.com/album/sleight-of-fox
--------------
All sounds originally recorded August 2023 by Dawn Celeste Ashley for Wei Zhou's exhibition ‘The Unspeakable in Pursuit of the Uneatable’ (CCA, Glasgow - September 2023). Hours of recordings, variations on ideas and loose compositions were created for the project during an intense period of creativity and back-and-forth communication with Wei Zhou. A number of these recordings were used as part of a 30-minute three screen video installation that formed the centrepiece of Wei Zhou's exhibition. The video piece featured disparate forms and overlapping themes employing filmic visual / narrative languages, first-person animalistic skirmishes and AI generated investigations. It explored themes of transformation, fable, night, seduction, threat and mystery; and although the exhibition had many disparate formal languages, underpinning it was an exploration of zhiguai xiaoshuo (early literary tales of the strange), particularly those of huli jing (fox spirits).
Guiding the recording process were ideas of temperature, transformation, alchemy, mirrors and liminal space. Recordings took the form of improvised percussive melodies using Wendy Carlos’ Gamma tuning system (close to 31 TET), field and foley recordings of water, glass, forest floors and fields, as well as synthesized atmospheres and other various instruments and effects. Many of the recordings were made to be layered or played quietly to create an underlying tone that when coupled with the images and narration would suggest temperatures and different mental states.
The creation of ‘Sleight of Fox’ sees Dawn Celeste Ashley re-engaging with the original recordings made during this period; treating them as sound objects to be recontextualised in a new evolving sonic landscape. No additional recordings, equalisation or effects were used in the creation of this new arrangement and the maximum number of concurrent audio layers was set to three in order to maintain the original colour of the recordings.
‘Sleight of Fox’ is a meditative and evocative reflection told in inhale and exhale, hold and release, hot and cold, storm and calm, reflection and mirror. Sounds flood into one another and pool in the air to be sent away in an exhale. Abstract amorphous noises and temperatures clot together, with melodies eventually piercing through the murk. Textures and pitches scrape and swoon across the landscape before the piece eventually returns to where it began, creating a full overarching inhale / exhale.

Using MIDI Designer Pro to control Microkorg XL
Переглядів 2,4 тис.8 років тому
The Microkorg XL is notoriously finicky to program, almost all editing is done in the Full Edit mode which is painstaking and doesn't allow you to change multiple things at once. Coming up with ideas takes time due to the effort that you need to go to change simple things such as Oscillators, Portamento, Levels, LFO rates etc etc I tried controlling parameters using an Arturia Beatstep MIDI con...
MS-20 patch - Total Random Overdriver
Переглядів 6139 років тому
This is using a patch I made called Total Random Overdriver. I add a bit of BigSky partway through the video. Basically I am using Sample and Hold to the Total input but I am going through the ESP first as this allows me to really push the signal hard and push the sound around in a much more aggressive manner. The S&H signal is triggering the keyboard and the signal is also going to HPF and LPF...
Four Korg MS-20 Mini Patches
Переглядів 15 тис.9 років тому
Here are four quick patches from across the past year that I wrote down in my little book of patches for future recall. This video is to illustrate four patches for a blog post that you can read here lovewithoutanger.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/ms-20-patches.html
Devo - Cold War (Demo) (MS20 Mini Patch)
Переглядів 3,3 тис.10 років тому
Greetings spuds! I have been revisiting Recombo DNA a lot recently and one thing I love about it is how much you can pick out individual synths in these demos; there is often different emphasis in the mix which brings out new characteristics in songs you thought you knew inside out. I have become fixated on the bass synth that Jerry uses on the Cold War demo so I tried to recreate it with my MS...
WKCR Interview with J.G. Thirlwell (3rd July 2013)
Переглядів 7 тис.11 років тому
Here is an interview that J.G. Thirlwell gave recently to WKCR 89.9 FM NY on the lead up to (among other things) a listening 'party' of his 2011 Manorexia album 'Dinoflagellate Bloom'. The event which is on the 11th will be a listening to the 5.1 mix of the album in a darkened room, very likely to give people the heebie jeebie's! There were no plans to make this interview available to stream/do...
Day cycle on Bionis Leg (Microkorg XL improvisation)

NOW DOWNLOADABLE THROUGH SOUNDCLOUD!! soundcloud.com/davidevoid/day-cycle-on-bionis-leg (UA-cam edit) soundcloud.com/davidevoid/day-cycle-on-bionis-leg-full-version (unedited) This is a direct recording of an improvisation on the Microkorg XL, using nothing other than a Microkorg XL, no outside effects etc. When I was improvising I came across these kind of bird like sounds so a lot of the impr...
Korg M01 - Devo - Human Rocket (1.5 edition)
Переглядів 1,7 тис.13 років тому
Hello, here is my 2nd cover of Devo's Human Rocket... but in an 'under construction' 1.5 edition. I have no idea when I will get round to actually finishing this which is why I have decided to upload it as it is. Hope you enjoy it, any comments will be taken into consideration when/if I finish the cover. Duty Now For The Future p.s. this cover was made using a Nintendo DS and Korg M01 software ...
Korg DS 10 - Devo - Love is Stronger Than Dirt
Переглядів 2,1 тис.13 років тому
DOWNLOADABLE THROUGH SOUNDCLOUD!! soundcloud.com/davidevoid/davidevoid-stronger-than-dirt Hello all, here's another Devo cover using the Nintendo DS software, Korg DS 10. Without any post production (aside from vocals) Love is Stronger Than Dirt is a track that features on the Recombo DNA set and is a demo that wasn't completed by Devo, from around the Shout era. i've not tried to complete it b...
Korg DS 10 - One Day
Переглядів 21713 років тому
An original composition made using only the Korg DS10 software for the Nintendo DS without any post production. For this track I was trying to emulate the feelings I get from listening to some of Steve Reich's music and the pulsing beats he uses. I wanted to take these into a more electronic area. I found (like he also did!) that images of train tracks kept coming to mind, so I filmed some trai...
Korg DS 10 - Free Improvisation (Nov. 2010)
Переглядів 11113 років тому
Hello, here's something very different to what I normally upload. It's much closer to 'Avant Garde' / Sound Art than Techno! I taken the deep listening principles of Free Improvisation and brought them into a solo live Korg DS 10 setting. All the sound is 100% live without any post production. It was recorded in one take in November 2010 (using only the Korg DS 10 software for the Nintendo DS) ...
Korg DS 10 - The Knife - Heartbeats
Переглядів 73913 років тому
DOWNLOADABLE THROUGH SOUNDCLOUD!! soundcloud.com/davidevoid/the-knife-heartbeats-korg-ds Yet another cover, and again, not a Devo cover! Shock horror. This has my self confessed awful vocals again. All music made using the Korg DS 10 software for the Nintendo DS without ANY post-production. What you hear is streamed directly from the DS. I'm pretty happy with this cover as it's very close to th...
Korg DS 10 - Aphex Twin - Avril 14th
Переглядів 1,2 тис.14 років тому
Hello, another Korg DS 10 cover using nothing other than the Korg DS 10 software for the Nintendo DS. This time, a cover of a pinao track from Richard D James' drukQs album... Not much to look at mind, so I put a little picture of Mr James for you all to stare at (or is he staring at you??), popping out from the side a la Mortal Kombat. Be happy or not
Is this how you can use this as a midi controller for my vst’s and virtual synth in Logic Pro x ??
I'm in ...
Yoyo is my fav 🧐
yo!
Yo yo yo!
yo yo the best
So glad to find this interview. Thanks a bunch for uploading! :)
Great interview!👌👍 but I was kind of hoping he would touch more on some of his early collaborations like "nurse with wound" or in particular Raymond watts of "pig"🎹🎧💫💀😵🙊🙉🙈😎🔥✋✌
How do you come up with these? So good.
Shucks, thank you! Lots of tinkering and listening I guess. Plus a camera and note pad. Will have to record some more soon.
Great fun! I play with this software too, but having uploaded any tracks made with it yet. Big like!
Did the Foetus opera ever materialize?
Don't believe so, sadly half of the projects he talks about don't come to be. Blame money and time I guess. At least he's still ambitious.
Wow! We'll done, took me back to my introduction to the Devo sound, during my youth! Thanks for the journey!
Jerry used a lot of Moog, Roland and some weird touch pad synth called the WASP, i dont know if he ever used korg however you can recreate a lot of those sounds with a Korg with no problem:)
Wow, looks so good. Thanks for the layout. Will test and use it today.👍
Tune still languishing? I liked it.
you should make a track based on the yoyo patch
I dont suppose you ever managed to make the Soulwax Krack patch (the rising bass part) i can sort the pitch bend out, the rest im going crazy trying to achieve, im starting to think its not possible without a Sansamp or some kind of FX, if you ever tried i'd be interested to hear your results though!
Sounds like it's just very produced and tinkered with in the studio. The texture to me suggests that it is heavily EQd. Just sounds very tight with every note. I haven't had my MS-20 out for an embarrassingly long time so I won't be able to try and emulate it just yet but I'd probably say OSC1=Square 32' (adjust the pulse width) // OSC2=Saw or RING 8' (slightly detuned) // MIX 1=10 2=7 // HPF Cutoff=3 Peak=5 EG2=3 // LPF Cutoff=5 Peak=6 EG2=5 // EG2=0,1,4,0,4 and then for the rising notes parts I'd probably patch the switch to start EG1 and then mess with EG1 until it matches the speed of the rise. I'll try this out above one day!
Thanks! I think its been heavily produced as well, the live version does sound similar and i know its going through a sansamp so, its either that or its layered with something else! Cheers!
Cool job mate :)
Sounds very cool, i'm currently learning how to program it on the fly like you
Great ideia, great work, David! This can bring a new breath of joy to any Microkorg XL user, like me! It is possible send me a copy of the mididesigner layout? Thanks!
Send me a personal message and I'll get it to you. Haven't checked whether it works with 2.0 but I'd imagine so.
cool patching... yoyo is great in particular very creative
this is a very good job, is it possible to have a copy of the mididesigner layout? Thanks!
Cheers! I haven't exported layouts before but I'll look into it and try and get it to you in the next week or so.
Great! Thanks again, I guess it took you alot of time. Microkorg XL (I have the plus version, but it should work) is an underrated beast with a very pleasant sound. I had mininova too, but I decided to keeo the XL.
Yeah it should work hopefully although it uses more than just Midi CC's in order to get the full functionality of the Microkorg, hopefully they didn't change things around much. This layout isn't 100%, but a lot of functions are there and working properly. Some elements were very time consuming but worth it haha
Microkorg XL is indeed underrated, just listening over a recording I did some years back and it still sounds very nice. Hope you're enjoying the layout soundcloud.com/davidevoid/day-cycle-on-bionis-leg-full-version
Excellent work man! been looking for a xl controller for ages this may just save me getting rid...any chance you could share it please?
Very enjoyable post
Thank you for posting. :)
+John Gaiser You're very welcome, I missed the interview the other day that also wasn't archived. People need to capture this stuff before it just disappears.
Excelent. This is exactly the kind of music I like to make with a hardware synth. I was in doubt about the capacity to edit the sound live on this synth and play with filters and oscilators (almost every review says that if you want to improvise and create sounds on the go you should get the original Microkorg) but it seems that you are doing it. It was recordered in one shot?
+Boddhisatta Thanks. Yeah, this is one recording with no overdubs. You have to be very creative with the patching (using the mod wheel and pitch bend for cutoff etc) and use the in built delay effects but yeah, you can get some great textures out of it. It would help if it had more knobs as editing is a little finicky but it can be done.
That is one mean sample. Good show!
+KWKBOX Cheers! I'm rather fond of it too
pretty cool patches, especially the last human voice one and the hellicopter sounds like fun too:-)
VolcaRock Cheers!
Where did you get the complete image of the woman?
Feno Mozo I can't remember to be honest. Maybe try searching the name of the model? I used to be a part of a very dedicated Devo forum called Spud Talk so someone might posted it there back in the day, but the forum is no longer around sadly.
5:28 the sound of encroaching madness
I would love to see you share this in my Facebook group Totally DEVOted. facebook.com/groups/TotallyDEVOted
One of my most favorite DEVO songs. Nice job.
thanks for taking the time to share this. very cool interview
They didn't have an MS-20, it was probably done on a Mini-Moog.
glad you posted this
right on. nailed it!
I know its a Devo cover but you make awesome music, really want to get the Korg DS 10 and the plus
Thanks, yeah it is great software, especially if you want an entry point to synths. The Plus version is best but will only work on the original DS and Lite (unless you live in the US in which case it will play on all DS and 3DS hardware)
Why is this song so perfect for the DS-10
having used the DS10 quite a bit, I marvel at the work that went into this-- DAMN! I stage dove right where Wiggly World would come in, I was that worked up.
If this video has taught me anything, it's that my voice is not good enough to sing this.
I just relearned this lesson.
My kingdom for a cover of "Race of Doom".
Good idea, may do just that, getting an MS20 mini for xmas, may use that.
Cool! Foetus interviews are uncommon, thanks for sharing this one!
That's alright, I'm surprised more people haven't watch this but never mind. When this was aired I asked JGT whether it would be archived online and he said there were no plans to... so I took it upon myself to do so!
Nice mix. I made a video with this song and real rockets....
I like it. I am a DEVO fan and I also fly high powered rockets. Check out my version of Human Rockets with real rockets and onboard videos.
