Old Ski Videos of Glencoe (1939-1994)
Old Ski Videos of Glencoe
1939 - Sam Drysdale
(Glencoe Ski Club / Lommond Mountaineering Club)
Original Lommond mountaineering club members skiing on Meall A Bhuiridh. Alot of the video shows skiers on the flat area below the East Ridge, far from the current tows. The club members would have stayed at Ba Cottage (just off the west highland way) - along with other pioneering skiers from the Creag Dhu club.
1957 - Charlie Bukelis / Dougie Hay (Glencoe Ski Club)
Scotland first permanent ski tow. Built by the Scottish Ski Club using effort co-ordinated by Major Philip Rankin from the Creag Dhu and Lommond clubs.
Glaswegian Frith Finlayson (BASI member number 1) formed the UKs first ski school based at Glencoe, before later moving to the Aviemore, along with Bob Clyde - to establish the Cairngorm Chairlift Company in the 1960s.
1961 - The original single man 'Jimmy Hamilton' access chair. Built on the front side of the mountain just after the formation of White Corries ltd (Scotlands first commercial ski centre). Same design was used for the Cliffhanger chair and Tiger at Glenshee - both of which are still running today.
1979 - Pat Smith (Scottish Ski Club)
An early SSC slalom race on Meall A Bhuridh.
This one didnt go through the haggis trap!
1989 - Ros McLennan (Glencoe Ski Club)
Danny Maddox rocking a classy Nevica fluorescent ski suit. Sorry Danny!
1994 - George Paton
Too much snow! 1994 was the winter where the top tows at Glencoe were infamously buried for over 2 months. Proof that you can have too much snow, even in Scotland! Hill manager Peter Weir tried to dig out a channel using a JCB - but drifting snow and high winds kept filling it back in. This clip was taken on 22nd May 1994 after the tows has finally been dug out

1987 - SAUDAN COULOIR SKI RACE EXTREME (WHISTLER BLACKCOMB)

The first Whistler Blackcomb Saudan Couloir Race Extreme
Justin Patnode: World's first ftm transsexual
I always think of this when Im watching Logan Pehota... Eric is his pops, yah?
Doug F'n COOMBS- 'what would you define as extreme? 'Not this.' Yeah, this is a marked and graded run at a ski area, it's nothing special, except for being able to say one has skied its 35...ISH degree steep parts. It's a fun run, and this was a cool comp, but moreso because of its noteriety than it's difficulty... It's namesake, Sylvan Saudan (R.I.P. July 18) skied down Gasherbrum- 55 degrees, AVARAGE, for @3,000 meters, starting at 8k... Even COOMBS- would have found THAT 'extreme'.
No hats and just goggles was the rage in the 1980's! Safety was no concern at all.
No helmet no 🧠! Sonny Bono died without one ! Even today there are some skiers and snowboarders refuse to wear them ! Pride before the fall!
Hey, if you're going to rip off some of Greg Stump's footage - you better give that filmmaker credit. Show some respect.
He did....
3:25 his son Logan Pehota has been on the Freeride circuit for a few years.
Anyone know the sound track details? Thanks!
If you told me you'd give me $2500 cash to huck that cliff in those conditions on those skis, I would politely ask you to keep your money.
40 years ago though, that's about $6800 in today's money. That said, you should try some skis like that sometime. Once you get em figured out they really do haul ass.
@@BCsJonathanTM I have tried skis like that. I used to own some. And I would happily repeat my statement adjusted for inflation.
@@SnootchieBootchies27 haha, fair nuff
My aunt was Jenny Rankin, one of the judges - so cool to see this today
This is easily on the list of greatest skiing videos on UA-cam
I skied the Sudan Couloir back in the day. Jumping off the cornice took a serious commitment to WTF.
The first Saudan Couloir race was held in 1987 but the footage in the above clip is from the1991 invitational (a separate event from the races). Footage taken from Greg Stump's Groove Requiem in the Key of Ski.
Absolute legends, and way ahead of the crap equipment with pure balls-to-the-wall bravado. With all that time in the back seat, I can see why onesies were the preferred kit back then. You're gonna spend a LOT of time in the snow.
Damn! Were helmets not invented in the 80s or what?
No
Ya bro. Not even on the radar. Crazy I know!
This is why we wore such colorful and awesome windbreakers back in the day. It was a good time to be a pathetic skiier too. Haa!
got one from value village about 4 years ago in grade 8 and its been my snowboard attire ever since, gotta live on the legacy. I always wonder what type of hotdoggin it has been through in the past
Our instructor took us to Saudan Couloir in early Dec 2021 (have a look what people done), but no teammate dare to skiing down. After seeing this video and visited the real venue, the feel is so difficult from just watching the video only!!!
It’s not that hard compared to other double blacks at whistler
Yes it is
I'm a kid of the late 90s and early 2000s. Hate those long skis. I don't ride anything over 150. Don't have as much control in the flats, but it makes the moguls way. more. fun.
why I started snowboarding in 1987, see above
those outfits tho! 😂 🔥
Skiing terrain like that takes stones even today, but then take into account this was in the 80's, still several years before skis with radical sidecuts became the norm, and these turns become even more impressive. Watching this during COVID kinda sad... this event, everyone hanging out around the Couloir watching and partying; I hope someday it can happen again.
As soon as November I’d say
Confirmed, It did happened again I attended the event today as its April 16, 2021.
You fell for the covid propaganda
Late 80s extreme skiing. Long skinny skis, colorful outfits, no hat but goggles. Has some Legends going down that Hill.
Fear is not part of their vocabulary. Really nice runs!
justin patnode is my friends dad! super good guy
I was sitting beside the judges watching that competition, and you can tell your friend that when his dad launched into the air to enter the course, we were right below and we just heard the crowd murmuring, we wondered where he was, then suddenly he sprang up into the sky right above us and appeared to clear the rocks. It was an amazing sight, and 30 years later your friend's dad had the most memorable run of the day, even if he didn't technically "win" the competition.
I skied a mogul contest in Breck with Justin and rode the lift up with him. He was awesome. I think he won it. This was back in 91ish.
Watching the one dude's helmetless head come within 3" of the rock band as his body slams into it. It's amazing it took as long as it did for helmets to become the norm. When I got back into skiing in 2012, my girlfriend asked if I was going to wear a helmet and I laughed. We got to the mountain and I realized my mistake.
fatalities from head trauma have actually INCREASED with the the use of helmets. Peopole feel invincible so they do stupider shit.
