O le pese o le Mau
A song recorded in Neiafu in 1967 critical of the New Zealand administration's use of money. The song is introduced by Moti, who refers to the song as a fagogo.
Na ou sau mai le Mulifanua
'Ua lavelavea le 'afa o le moa,
Ē, Niu Sila 'ua 'e sola
'Na o'u toe ta'amilo I gāuta
'E ta'avalevale le ali'i puta
Ē, 'o tupe 'ua na 'ai 'uma.
Sā momoe ma manū e le fati
Sau fo'i le uō mai Niu Silani
Tolotolo uga, tolotolo te'i ane lava 'ua aliali
'Ua manatua 'i lou tāofi
Talu lava upu a Samoa
'Ātoa fo'i ma tupe e tele
Lei ane lava 'ua leiloa.
'Ua tia'i le atunu'u 'o le mana'o 'i tupe
'O le maumau i le Kovana
Ne'i lē maua 'o le kuata
Pupula mai le papālagi
'Ua leai se upu e tali
'O le manatu 'i le sileni nei
Le alu 'i le ta'avale afi
Ma se mōlī penisini o lona fale
Ma se peleue fa'amau afe
'Ātoa fo'i ma ou fa'alavelave.

In 1966 Faaninimo was a very old lady, old enough to remember the arrival of Tongan alia at Falealupo. Uniquely, she would have spent her early years in the 19th century. Here is one of her fagogo. The photo is of the Lua loto at Falealupo before the storm destroyed it. Enjoy.

A male choir from Sili, Savai'i led by Fiu Tapa'i in 1968. This was the laulau siva that the choir chose to start their set of songs for recording, later broadcast on A3Z. The photo show the village at that time, before the bridge was built. Crossing the slippery stones was always fraught. In the 1960s, most villages had a fale lalaga where mats of various types were woven in a communal environment. To pass the time, informal singing of popular songs was common; some were local compositions. This vi'i was sung by the fale lalaga in Ti'avea. (For those of you with eagle eyes, the accompanying photo is from the neighbouring village of Saleaaumua.) Lulīlulī 'o le pe'a Tagi fa'amāe'a...

Every village visited in the 1960s had its own vi'i song of self-praise. This vi'i recorded from Fogatuli was sung by a group of women led by Sekai Ma'ilata. As you will see and hear, the poetic focus is on natural attributes of the village its several freshwater sources and abundant shellfish. Ē, suga e, se‘i ‘e fa‘alogo mai Se‘i fa‘alau atu igoa o nai o‘u atuvai ‘O le vai i Sua‘ava ma le vai ...

In 1968 I spent time in Fagae'e, staying with Fa'ailo and Lote and their family. It was apparent that the village had been active in nationalist activities earlier in the century, and a small group led by Tanea and including Vao and Nu'u sang this song, and one other, by way of example. 'Ua mao fuafua nei fo'i lo'u loto I le tala 'ua sau 'i Upolu 'Ua lē tū manu 'ae tū logologo 'Ua utu 'o le mas...

There were times in the 1960s when people got quite excited about reviving songs they remembered from their younger days, and an ad hoc choir would gather and perform. In Faletagaloa I stayed with Mamea Sakai, whose memory of events and songs 40 years earlier was still clear, and he wanted to sing, despite his advanced age. In this song, he leads a small group of men singing about a disagreemen...

The words of songs and levels of understanding of their relevance change over time; Samoa is no exception. Here is one example. In the 1890s William Churchill lived in Samoa and was interested in historical linguistics; he compiled a three-volume set of Samoan poetry (including the earliest known version of Tofa Mai Feleni) and a card index of the Samoan language. These unpublished materials ar...

'O tini o le mānaia were rarely performed in context in the 1960s for the simple reason that the marriage of a mānaia to a tāupōu was itself rare, and such an event was the only occasion for performance. The tini, a form of publicly performed poetry, functions to proclaim the primacy of access, an entitlement of rank, afforded by a mānaia to a tāupōu. Because the number of mānaia titleholders i...
