Will the ant eat the elephant? Fraser, Colorado at 9,000ft.
EGO SNT2110 21" steel auger snow blower VS. 4 feet of hard packed snow.
With the right technique, it got the job done.
This was a wicked 3day snowstorm.
Any snow blower would have a hard time with that mess, and i was impressed with the little unit.
It was eating up the batteries fairly quickly, but only had to stop and charge them once, and had 1-bar left at the end of the video.

How to replace the Steel Auger on the EGO SNT2110 Snow Blower. The shaft bent, then quickly failed. Tools: T20 Torx bit, 9/16 Hex bit and pliers. Took me about 30minutes. EGO snow blowers have design flaws that cause catastrophic failure.

24" two-stage has a cheap cotter pin where it needs a roll pin in the impeller shaft. 21" single-stage w steel auger, bent auger 1st use out of the box. 21" Auger shaft is a poor design. I hit a block of ice, and it bent the auger shaft. Vibrates horribly. The auger shaft should not be the weak point. The belt should pop-off, or there should be pins on the auger shaft. Used for about 20minutes....

    May I suggest you move your camera down by your hands. You have a nice head of hair but I don't really want to see that. Also, your music is a tad too loud. I found this video because my 24-in Ego bit the dust today.

    this is a classic problem with all snowblower. the front snow screw assembly must be made as to safely break something replaceable away instead of breaking something important. even the gas powered one sometimes break the whole gearbox in the front when the shear bolts doesnt work as they should.

      @@randomrazr Its not the auger shear pins, those break-away when they should. The impeller pin is a solid cotter-pin on the EGO, other manufacturers use a breakaway roll-pin there. This causes motor failure, $300 part and complete dis-assembly. "Foreign Objects" not covered under warranty. I sell Honda parts online, so I just took the 24" apart and listed parts on ebay, sold well as I was the only one selling used EGO parts on there.     I bought the 24" two-stage last year after my NorthStar gas powered gave out after twenty-two years of "just one more winter." What I used for the auger shear pins on the NorthStar were just two 16 penny galvanized nails that I bent so they wouldn't fall out. Man, oh man would those nails easily shear. This morning the "bolts," of my Ego had sheared. Had to knock 'em out with a hammer and punch, because bolt length was stuck. I looked at the replacement bolts and 16 penny nails. I went with the nails as they will shear off easily and are cheap.

      Right on, the auger shear pins on the EGO break-away as they should, but the nails will save $5 a whack. It is the impeller pin that is the issue in the EGO. Honda and other makers use a break-away roll pin design on the impeller. EGO uses a solid cotter pin. If anything gets caught in the impeller, the $300 motor fails. My only guess is the electric motor has too much torque and was blowing the roll pin. Even in the newer 24" and 28" EGO models, they stayed with the same impeller cotter-pin. Maybe I should try the nail for the impeller pin.

      @@CivicWagonParts Necessity is the mother of invention. I just used the 16 penny nails because I didn't have anything else. I thought I was doing something wrong as I had to replace the nails 4-7 times a winter. It is a bummer when the nail shears just when you get into clearing the driveway. Your vid did help.

      The procedure is the same for the CRX, but the wagon bumper does not quite line up. Lower Splash Shields and Bumper Slide Clips are the same all 88-91 Civic and CRX models.

      Hit or miss. I started with a ego in 2019..and have purchased lawn mower, snowblower, chain saw, weed trimmer, etc. I have been very fortunate with no issues. I probably need to sharpen mower blade or replace it and I did have to replace sheer pin oknsnowblower after I picked up an old light thst was in driveway.

    Sad that in my first year of owning my EGO (2022) I’ve only used it three times including twice in one day. My neighbors were thankful as I did half my block and my yard all on one charge with the 7.5. My neighbor took care of the other half with his blower.

    Thank you for this video. I'm going to be a lot more careful about keeping my driveway clear of objects and maybe I won't snowblow the road anymore due to the risk of chunks of ice. I can testify that when you hit a chunk of ice it makes a heck of a noise. I just wasn't realizing it could damage the snowblower this badly. Thanks, man. Good public service.

      Yeah man. I fixed the 21" model, and got a huge storm while waiting for the auger. Only took 4days to get the part ($90 w S&H). Here is another vid, showing the repaired 21" vs 3-4feet of snow. Had a technique, but the little rig kept up, and has been through a couple smaller storms no problem. 21" was not the right tool for this job, but I was impressed with what it was able to do. ua-cam.com/video/3GFWay6YZB0/v-deo.html

    Bought my Honda HS624 Brand new in 1994. 30 years old this year. I change the oil each season andpull put out the spark plug before each season storage and spray fogging oil into the cylinder. I inspect the plug and on average every replace it wit a new one every 2 or 3 years. After each use close the fuel supply and let the carb bowl run empty until the engine shots off and never an issue. Add some Stabil 360 in the gas and good to go for next winter use. Starts on first pull EVERY time. I paid $972 w/ tax back in 1994 and now in the 30th year, I am averaging a cost of $32 a year plus oil changes, gas and spark plugs. I would recommend a new homeowner starting out to take the plunge and spend the money for a new Honda Snowblower. Yes, you pay up front, but they last and cost of ownership will eventually be the best value !

      Yeah man, as you can see I am Civic Wagon Parts, lol. I love the engineering behind Honda products. These EGOs were my first-ever snow blowers. I did my homework and thought EGO was good option. Now that I have seen the EGOs in action. The design of Honda is far superior. The Honda impeller shaft has 2-3 breakaway points. I would have been back rolling in 20mins and $5 part with a Honda. Honda just came out w a Hybrid Snow Blower. I am gonna try and plug away w the EGO while I save up for a Honda, lol.

      I am saving up for the new Honda Hybrid snow blower, lol. I had the EGO 24" two-stage. I was impressed with it the first year, then I hit a dog bone. Caused catastrophic impeller/motor failure, see my other EGO videos. I had the batteries and charger, so I went with the 21" single stage. If I had kept up with the big storm, the 21" model would have done better.     If anyone is considering an electric snow blower especially a two-stage I would consider a Toro. I don't have first-hand experience wasn't electric Toro as I'm very happy with my gas powered snowblower. Good thing about the Toro Electric 2 stages that they use the same chassis that's used on their gas powered machines.

      Yes, Toro has had way more experience with snow blowers, and I can see the Toro impeller shaft design on the electric two-stage is made with breakaway pins.     Great job my friend. For people in Colorado I recommend a Honda snowblower as thee honda snowblower I've seen from other people gets though really deep snow. As far as dog bone goes the honda has a commercial gear box that I haven't seen replaced yet. Track drive is the best. Less effort. You sound exhausted.

      Yeah man, I am a Honda Tech and a Honda Snowblower was what I really wanted. Cost seemed high, but now I know. This was my first snowblower, and was a sign of defeat anyways, since I can no longer keep up with shoveling. Honda has a couple breakaway pins in the impeller shaft. Dog-Bone in Honda snowblower would have been a 10-minute repair and $5 part. My guess is the torque from the EGO electric motor was too much for a roll-pin and EGO had to use that cotter pin. Even in the upgraded EGO 24" and the new EGO 28", still have the cotter pin on the impeller shaft. I sell old OEM Honda parts in my ebay store. The parts from the 24" EGO sold well on eBay. Gonna save up this summer and get a good used Honda. I saw a 30yr old Honda that did much better job than the new EGO.

    So - you have a "failure" on this equipment but instead of figuring out how to disassemble OR take it to a service center- you buy another smaller, less capable unit..... You got the big one home after purchasing it - riiiight? And you can't figure out transport to fix.... This is poor decision-making on your part primarily.

      I purchased the 24" model at a Murdoch's less then a mile from my house. It fit in my Civic Wagon with the hatch up. Murdoch's does not warranty EGO products in-house, they refer you to a warranty center. In my case it was 70 miles each way. Would not have mattered, as I found out foreign objects are not covered under the EGO warranty. It was actually a great decision, I did fine selling the 24" parts on eBay, doubled my money in a month. I am now working with the warranty centers to buy more 24" snow-blowers for parts, as they have piles of these units with the same motor failure. It is worth me sending a truck down to buy them at scrap prices, 10 at a time.

      Well, we ended up OK. Parted out the 24" model. I sell Honda parts on eBay, so listing the EGO parts was easy. I was the only one w used EGO parts and they are selling well. I will more than break even. Bought a new $90 auger for the 21" model. Then we got the "storm of the century" here, 4feet in 3days. Hit while I was waiting on the new auger.     Sorry that happened to you! I just bought the 28" model. Ive used it a couple times now and Im pretty happy with it. Its very good to be aware of this design flaw though! Ill have to be careful, especially plowing the end of the driveway where the snowplows go by, there can be big chunks of ice in there

      That 28" rig looks good. Still has the same cotter-pin on the impeller, but should do a good job. I was really impressed w my 24" for the 1st year, and I did buy a new auger for the 21" model. (Foreign Objects are not covered under warranty, FYI). Just watch as your 'blowing, and throw those ice chunks out of your way if possible. Sticks, Rolled-Up newspaper, anything that might jam that impeller. I have a had a couple techs look at the real problem. We might try a roll-pin on the 24" impeller, but the torque from the electric motor might blow the roll pin. I will keep youtube posted if I come up with something.

    Sorry you had that issue but we don't have a dog (or kids) so hopefully that won't be a problem. I just replaced my 2009 Ariens 30" 9 HP with the same Ego model. Got the Ego with 4 10AH batteries for $1899 so couldn't pass it up. I just finished my 5th use and though it's not perfect it's much easier to use than the old Ariens. Smooth, relatively quiet and powerful and it throws heavy wet snow much further than my old Ariens could ever hope to. I also appreciate the ability to independently control auger/impeller speed compared to forward drive. Being able to change both speeds on the fly is also a nice feature where with the Ariens you had to stop and select a different notch position on the friction disc. The Ego tracks much better than the Ariens as I don't find myself fighting to keep it straight and inline. We have a "mountable curb" on our approach from the street and the Ariens struggled with keeping the scraper bar in contact going up and I always had to fight to keep the machine down on the pavement. That has not been an issue with the Ego as it stays planted on the pavement without a struggle but maybe that's due to its smaller size. The Ego's not perfect as I said and I'm very happy I waited for the 4 10AH battery offer because it does chew up batteries on heavy wet snow. Your comments are accurate in that if you keep the auger speed down the battery life is noticeably extended but that's not always possible with wet snow. Again with the wet stuff, even at slow forward speed and the auger in turbo and taking only a half cut there's still quite a bit of spillover on the cleared side. This isn't an issue unless the snow is really wet and heavy and in all fairness the Ariens did the same but maybe to a lesser extent but it also had an auger that was 6" wider. I've found when the spillover is occurring I just let it happen and after the drive is cleared once I then take a second quick high speed pass which leaves the drive pristine. I also bought the Ego power shovel with the multi-tool head and have been really impressed with that machine. It's a bit heavy but very effective and it's amazing how far it throws even the wet stuff. For some reason the 4 AH battery lasts unexpectedly long with that tool and I think I've only exhausted it while using once and that was the first time so probably wasted quite a bit of juice. I'm in Southeast Wisconsin and we just got blasted with 12+ inches. We lost 4 beautiful spruce trees as the snow was just too wet and heavy for them to support. I did use the Ego 3 times during the storm and went through 5 pairs of charged batteries but our drive is about 2000 square feet. The Ego had no problem with the plow pile at the approach. Again, sorry for your issues and time will tell if mine stays trouble free.

      I was impressed with the 2400 for the first year. It could be anything caught in the impeller. One landscape company on here caught a stick and had the same motor failure. Sticks, rocks, ice, newspaper, etc.... Just make sure your driveway is clear of anything! Take a look at your Ariens and compare their design on the impeller pin. My guess is EGO wanted to use a breakaway roll-pin there, like the other manufacturers, but maybe the torque from the electric motor was blowing roll-pins and EGO had to go with the cotter pin on the impeller shaft. I took the 2400 apart, and am selling the parts on eBay. The motor seems to be the most looked-at part, even thought it is described as "blown", lot of folks looking at the motor assembly.       @@CivicWagonParts I'm not sure about the cotter vs roll pin for securing impellers as I've never had to replace one myself. I suppose it makes sense to have a sacrificial pin but you may be correct in that the Ego drive motor has too much torque and therefore using a roll pin would be a nuisance. I am surprised that Ego uses steel impellers as many manufactures (Toro for one) have been using engineered plastic impellers for years. I don't have an issue with engineered plastic components because if the material is right for the application and the component is properly designed they have advantages over metal. When I rebuilt my Buick 400 cube motor in 1971 the cam timing gear was plastic and that was 8 cylinders producing 400 HP (after I was done with it) and the cam gear was never an issue so plastic wheel gears aren't a concern. I think Ego made a good decision on plastic vs metal on the unit. One reason I sold my 2009 Ariens so cheap is because the auger housing and gear case were nothing but rust and paint flaking off in sheets. My impression is if Ego places a 5 year warranty on the machine they must have done their homework. Before I bought mine I checked for local warranty service centers and I have 2 within a 10 minute drive of my home so I'm not too concerned. If it breaks it will go for warranty repair. I've checked the videos for the replacement of the auger, auger gearbox, auger shaft bearings and impeller and all seem very simple to do and if necessary I'd have no concern doing that work myself. A drive motor replacement is a bigger issue and for that It'd go for warranty service if it was covered. My experience with the Ego is short but from an operational standpoint it's superior to the larger Ariens it's replaced and much more pleasurable to use. Ego rates their batteries at 800~1000 charge cycles which by my estimate the four 10AH batteries that came with the blower should theoretically last me 40 years and I'll be gone long before that. If they last me 10 I'll be 81 and probably not blowing snow. No gas storage, no fuel stabilizer, no oil changes, no carburetor rebuilds, no difficult starts, no engine backfiring flames through the muffler, much more quiet, a machine that tracks perfectly, operates without vibration and throws snow further and cleans the pavement just as well makes it no contest for me but I realize your experience was different.

      I caught a dog bone. I think the Impeller shaft should have a breakaway roll-pin, not a cotter pin.     I had a similar failure with mine. The impeller shaft only turns about half way then totally jams. Im guessing the transmission has failed. Ive been on the phone for over a week with non technical idiots. They are trying to void the warranty because I took the impeller assembly off. Had to escalate the case two times and now they want me to drive it 3 hours to a repair center. Im thinking about just parting it out like you did. Just ordered the green works from Costco. Comes with 3 batteries and at least Costco will stand by it. I've seen bad reviews on the green works brand too.

      Yeah man, took two guys about an hour to get it stripped. Basic tools, long Hex and Torx bits. I just put up the listings over the weekend. Here is my ad for the impeller with a bunch of good pics. www.ebay.com/itm/256360124023 The ad shows pics of the stressed impeller pin, which EGO uses a solid cotter pin. Most other manufaturers use a break-away roll pin here. Check out the impeller shaft design on a Honda. Has two points on shaft that will fail before the motor. My guess is the torque from the electric motors blows the roll pins, and intead of figuring it out EGO just stuck that cheap pin in there.

      The 21" w steel auger was $469, tool only. Takes the same 56V batteries and charger as the 24". I do not want to fix the 24" model, as I will probably hit another foreign object. I have taken the SNT2400 apart and I am selling the parts on eBay. The parts I have listed from the 24" total almost $2k. Warranty center is 70 miles each way, Twice. One trip to drop off, one trip to pick up. 280 miles with a borrowed truck over 11,000ft mountian pass in the winter. Then 60-90 days wait for the repair was the killer. I will need a lawnmower in 90 days, I need a snowblower today. I was hoping the 21" model single-stage without the impeller would have a better design, and pop the belt when stuck like other models. Belt did not pop-off, no shear pins on the auger. Complete auger/shaft assemebly needs replaced, $100 for parts and a fairly quick fix for the 21". But again, why fix it? Every time you catch something $100 in parts + Labor. Other manufaturers: Honda,. Toro, Ariens, Cub Cadet, etc....have figured out these issues. I will be selling the EGO parts and will save up for a Honda snow blower next year. Want to see how much plastic is inside these EGO machines? Here is the complete 24" unit, broken down.       Check out 2:40 24" model, It was a dog bone. The impeller is held on to the impeller shaft with a hard cheap cotter pin. Most other manufacturers use a roll-pin here, similar to the shear pins on the auger, so the roll-pin would break under stress and save the motor and gears. Roll-Pin on the impeller shaft is a 15minute repair on a Honda snow blower and a $4 part. The EGO snt2400 blew a $300 motor, requiring complete disassembly of the machine. (4hrs shop labor). Cheaper to buy the bare tool new for $849 than to have it repaired. Similar problem with the smaller snt2100. Caught a block of car-ice, see 15:10. There are no shear pins on the auger, and in other manufacturers snow blowers the belt would pop-off the pulley if you caught something. EGO snt2100 was $100 in parts and a 1hr repair. Worth fixing, but would have been a easier & cheaper fix with other manufacturers. Under warranty unless you hit any foreign object. Then warranty is void. So, as I state in the video: These work great under perfect conditions, but if you have any chance of hitting a foreign object, you may want a different machine.

      @@CivicWagonParts I agree with you. My company has the same unit. Crew used it and had a piece of a tree branch about 3/4" diameter by 6" long jam the auger and destroyed the gearbox. We bought a new gearbox and I changed it in about 1-1/2 hours. We needed it working so we did not mess with trying to get it fixed under warranty.

Personally, I'd rather my money go to Americans or other first world workers being paid actual wages, and not 35 cents an hour to some child laborer. Ariens make their blowers out of steel and iron, not plastic, and they are made in the US by adults, not little kids. American Steel > Chinese plastic.

      I had the charger and batteries, I figured I would try the other model. The 2110 is a single stage, and I was hoping without the impeller it would work better for my use. I inspected it carefully, and thought the belt would pop-off if I hit another hard object. No shear-pins on the auger, and belt did not pop, the auger shaft bent. No point in fixing the SNT2400, the design flaw of the impeller shaft pin will only cause failure again. My guess is the electric motor has so much torque, it was blowing roll pins, and EGO went with the cheap cotter pin to hold impeller on the shaft. I will use the units until they fail completely, sell the useable spare parts on eBay and save up for a Honda snow blower. Check my profile. I am a Honda mechanic and parts reseller. I feel I gave the EGO tools a fair review, and was not just "bashing ego". .

      @@richscott2952 Correct, Honda snow blowers break the roll pin on the impeller. $5 part, 15minute repair. EGO does not have a roll pin on the impeller shaft, so the $300 motor fails, and requires complete dis-assembly of the machine.

    Those machines are junk.junk.junk. I repair small engine equipment and would never repair these. Just way to expensive for the customer and here in Canada there is no place to recycle the batteries so to the dump they go. Nothing green about these at all

I think Honda makes one of the best, and Honda uses a break-away roll-pin on the impeller shaft. Maybe the torque from the electric EGO was blowing that roll-pin and they had to use something else.
