If you mean rock crawl, I agree. Off road, I think it’s proven they do a good job 👍. With good tires and clearance, it can easily do trails up to level 3 but with a rear locker and a good driver, you can tackle up to level 6 trails. It’s all about expectations, a stock Wrangler Rubicon can’t tackle the actual Rubicon trail. If your definition of off road is Hell’s Revenge, then you are definitely going to be disappointed with Sprinters. Thanks for watching! 🍻

Good question. The factory 4x4 system does amazing overall but has limitations which can often time be overcome with a little momentum and line choice. However, accelerating to clear an obstacle will cause additional wear and tear on the vehicle. Prior to locker installation I had to keep momentum otherwise I would get stuck and I would have to try backup or pull out my traction boards. Ever since I installed the locker I can clear obstacles slowly and I no longer have to use my traction boards. No matter your configuration, in deep sand, deflating your tire is most important. Yes, the factory 4x4 can drive in deep sand without locker in 4Lo but you will need to keep momentum and higher rpm. The locker helps tremendously in the sand and I recommend keeping it active on the beach or sand dunes. I’ve driven countless time in those situations with both configurations, and if you are planning on exploring remote places in loose terrain , then a locker will offer better performance and peace of mind. 👍

Thanks for watching! In case you didn’t see my other post, yes the locker helps most in situations with two wheels in the air and in deep sand. With my Sprinter 4x4 (low range) I drive in dunes sometimes and I leave the locker activated when driving in deep sand. You need to keep momentum and not stop on incline obviously, but it does a better job than you would expect. 👍 The AWD sprinter is not good in the sand without locker, but once installed, the AWD 50:50 power ratio with locker actually performs as well if not better than the 4x4 model. If you are going to be driving exclusively in harsh conditions like dunes, a Bronco and Lexus 4x4 would definitely outperform the Sprinter but they won’t have a toilet in the back 😅. No matter the vehicle, deflating your tires is most important when driving in the sand. 🙌✌️Make sure you bring proper recovery tools.

Yes, I believe he used Xantrex Solar Panels xantrex.com/products/solar-panels/ But you can use any solar panels attached to custom hand rails with a pivot pin on each end. It’s a custom job, that vehicle belongs to a new owner but he might be at next year’s Overland Expo West in Flagstaff. 👍

Thanks for watching! Good question. I would say that AO RIP kit is the best for the money but not the best overall anymore. If you’re trying to get the most out of your money, I still highly recommend the RIP kit as long as it has the Billstein shock. The Billstein is a little firm at first but it is a very durable shock. Van Compass recent main strut replacement is really cool, and back then, I might have considered it as a better option. As of today, we also have Evictus, King, KW, and more for Sprinters. I guess it depends on your budget, van weight, and use. I wouldn’t install a suspension that retains or adds spacers on the rear leaf-springs. 👍

Love the 4x4 econoline! I was on the waitlist for a Sportmobile, now Field Van chassis camper E350 conversion when they discontinued them. I would agree that reliable isn’t what the Sprinters are known for. Had mine for almost 5 years with many off road trips and luckily had just minimal repairs. The biggest reason for Sprinter’s growth is that they offer the best 4x4/AWD vans from factory and have more space/comfort inside for a camper than the E350. The e350 biggest weak point was that they only came in 2wd and required 4x4 aftermarket conversions. 👍

Because I go traveling in my jeep and that van would not make in several places. Van on open road, great. Off road and climbing, not so great.

Normally the B58 is a good reliable engine. Remember that some BMW parts are carried by Toyota such as the ones found in the Supra. However, I agree, I would like more power and/or better fuel economy, 15mpg on 32” tires and empty, is a scary place to start for an overlanding vehicle. 👍

Definitely more intended for long road trips and hotels, with the occasional stop on a dirt road near a trailhead to spend the night before heading back on the road.

👍 Trying to decide how to experience the outdoors is part of the fun. It’s a debatable topic, everyone has a different use and definition of camping, glamping, overlanding, van life, RVing, … Some people are full time living in their van, for others it’s just a holiday hobby. Some go to very remote places and others stay at established campsites with hookup. Sounds like you have something interesting to introduce, that’s awesome! 🙌🍻😊

It all depends on your purpose... If you're going camping to enjoy it I prefer the old fashioned way with tents etc.. But if I want to see remote place and travel the country def a van build out.

Don’t really need AC with a full ceiling pop top since hot air rises and escapes through the windows. But if you want AC with a Sportsmobile or Field Van pop top, I recommend something like Cruise N Comfort since it’s mounted below the van and you don’t have to cut into the fiberglass roof.
