This show paints Nagumo in a far more sympathetic light than Midway did as being surrounded by people who didn't get the memo lol

What I can't accept is the scene where Japanese Pilot Amiga dives his plane into an American Carrier. Although the American side lost the Yorktown, there was nothing like this at Midway.

With the Japanese code broken the operation had very little chance of success. Yamamoto knew the whole war strategy was going to fail, the only chance of success was for the US to suffer defeats so severe they would sue for peace which wasn't going to happen

It was a major mistake by Nagumo that negated much of the strategic victory in weakening the Pacific Fleet for six months. He paid with his life on Saipan.

They were more afraid of the missing carriers than of NOT inflicting a truly debilitating blow. Yamamoto should have made it clear that just sinking battleships was NOT enough of a blow to cripple the US Pacific Fleet. With 6 fleet carriers, Nagumo had the advantage....more than at Midway....should have refueled and stayed in the area until the US carriers showed up. Certainly should have launched another attack or two... fuel tanks...hangars... OTHER SHIPS/SUBS.

The problem for Admiral Yamamoto was not that he had to fight the American Navy, he also had to fight the Imperial Japanese Army.

The Japanese messed up at PH by not sending out recon planes to find any nearby American Carriers. They messed up by not sending the whole Kitu Butai to Coral Sea. Japan messed up by sending some carriers to the Aleutian islands.

Yamamoto was a great man, no doubt, but Japanese revisionism portrays Nagumo way too harshly. Yeah he made some major fuck ups but from the Japanese portrayal, he singlehandedly cost them the Pacific War. I know every movie needs a villain but still...Yamamoto deserves just as much blame for PH and Midway, they were his babies after all.

    • @krispykremes2482
      @krispykremes2482 3 дні тому

and no, PH was not the great victory history makes it out to be. No carriers sunk, over 50 of their best pilots lost and the US was able to re-use all but 2 battleships in the war. plus the fuel tanks. A tactical win at best.

People keep getting the Doolittle Raid wrong. The B-25's came in independently (not in any kind of formation). They were *very* low as they came in, climbed to 1,500 feet, bombed and then got back on the deck to bug out. The bombs were very scattered and many people on the ground saw and heard nothing. Go read Lawson's book for cryin' out loud!

    • @notSoSmthOptr

It would be a logistical nightmare for the Japanese, but the true goal of the Midway Plan is to destroy the Remaining Carriers of the US Pacific Fleet but in a year or so the US will retake Midway eventually..

If you look at the Japanese perspective prior to the start of WW2, their logic made sense as to why the war started. The Japanese saw an isolationist United States still reeling from being dragged into WW1 against its will and still recovering from The Great Depression. Furthermore, the Japanese saw how the US was not intervening with troops in Europe when Germany looked unstoppable and stood idle while Britain was pummeled by The Blitz. They genuinely believed a decisive initial blow would cause the US to call it a day and stay out of Asia.

If anyone is interested in how The Battle of Midway was actual fought (and the USS Yorktown was never hit by a suicide attack, what BS) then I highly recommend reading the book "Shattered Sword--The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway" by Jon Parshall and Anthony Tully. The book recounts the battle from the Japanese point of view and destroys the myth of the "five minutes" that doomed Japan.

Yamamoto's early support of naval aviation means he should bear partial responsibility for IJN not being able to advance technology and replenish manpower...... not in comparison to the USN but as a fighting arm itself. It's one thing to be surpassed by the USN (although it should have been deemed a common issue for both IJA and IJN), but it's another when aircraft carriers were ultimately reduced to decoys and battleships and cruisers had to give up their scout planes to shore-based units because they had too few pilots left.
