If we ust include metal in this, here's my theory of the robot-sonic we see in this video: Eggman makes metal sonic, basically sonic but better and robotic, trying to beat sonic in his own game which is speed.. After that he tried to overcompensate with a taller and more resistent mecha sonic mark 1 in Sonic 2. But the one we see in sonic2 game gear is a prototype of that (If this game is still canon). And in 3K we see mark 2 (I'LL CRUSH YOU), which was made to copy super sonic. After all this, eggman upgrades metal sonic to keep up with modern sonic, be it neo metal, be it the metal we see in the modern games.
