    Great video! And excellent point about not feeding it very often, it should be a small percentage of their overall diet.

    Hello General what is a good starting tortoise?

    • @tortoisegeneral
      @tortoisegeneral 3 місяці тому

      hello! it all depends on how much space you have, if you have a lot of space and live in a warm climate you can go for the desert specie of tortoise they get bigger and can really enjoy the outdoor sun, if space is limited I personally recommend a horsehide or Hermanns they get about a foot long and can weigh 5lbs max, but its totally up to you :)

      I have a question. I'm thinking about getting a small tortoise, that stays relatively small. If I have enough space in my Apartment, could I keep it in a tank (with heat Lamps, etc. ofc) because the problem is, I don't own a garden, but I still have the option to let the tortoise roam outside since I have a big balcony. Just wanting to hear your opinion :) @@tortoisegeneral

      @@Ly-1998 thanks for reaching out, so there are a few tortoise species i can recommend, greek, Egyptian and pancake tortoise. These are all great fun and super adorable and small torts they get max 5-8 inches in length and can definitely stay in a tank, just make sure its an open tank enclosure and they will be perfect for an apartment. Let me know if this helps, and if you have anymore questions feel free to ask me :)

      @@tortoisegeneral thank you for the quick answer, that sounds great! I'm a newbie and still learning about tortoises, so I need to ask another question, would you recommend keeping 2 females, or 1 male? Or can I keep 1 female? Because I have read you can keep females in groups in a tank with the appropiate size. I mean, ofc I will still collect Informations and do my research but I also wanted to ask someone who has tortoises and experience. Maybe you can also recommend me a gender that would be the best for beginners. 😅

    • @tortoisegeneral
      @tortoisegeneral 2 місяці тому

      @@Ly-1998 No problem is was a newbie to and i had the same dilemma! With tortoises especially if you are going for a hatchling so baby tortoise its quite difficult to determine the gender you can look at the plastron and tail length but normally sex is determined when tort reaches 5 years, when it comes to what gender is best for beginners it honestly doesn’t matter i wanted a boy but got a girl and It doesn’t really matter, males might get a little pacey once they reach sexual maturity they may mate with any object to simulate breeding but gender of tort’s doesn’t really effect difficulty they are all pretty much the same to care for females do get slightly larger though! I honestly recommend keeping 1 tort since it’s your first time and you can always upgrade your tort army as you get more experience! Hope this helps!

    Quick question, why is broccoli or cauliflower not good for the leopard tortoise? My tortoise loves it.

    • @tortoisegeneral
      @tortoisegeneral Рік тому

      Broccoli and cauliflower contain goitrogens these damage the thyroid, liver and kidneys in the tortoise, it is strongly advised to not feed these to your tortoises otherwise it will cause these health problems, you can get all your information on what is fine to feed and what isn’t on TortoiseTable.org Best of luck to your little one and if you have any more questions let me know!

    • @tortoisegeneral
      @tortoisegeneral Рік тому

      Sorry it took me awhile to reply, its very normal i have this aswell, i normally keep his substrate the same it being 70% coco coir and 30% coco chips, whenever i change my torts substarte he always gets distressed especially when i add wet substrate it’s probably because its damp and cold but this is only for a day or two. Let me know if he still does this!

      @tortoisegeneral Рік тому

      @@jeanmcmanus2698 ye if the damp cold substrate wasn’t the issue then he probably didnt like the new big change in substrate thats very normal, i think you did very well by adding in some chips then you can add less next time you change his substrate untill he gets used to the normal coco coir and topsoil!
