I mostly agree. But, in the context of the Metal Virus bit, I disagree. He and everyone were suffering to a far greater degree. Over and over again people got lost forever, or had that come close to them. Everyone was in pain, and saw everyone else be in pain. It was quite a nightmare, even compared to other things.

I do think you’re being a bit too harsh on the metal virus thing, you do have to remember that this is probably the most he’s had to think about not saving people via touch while also being under a lot of stress. If he stops moving for more than a minute to breathe he’ll turn into an unstoppable monster that will basically kill everything so I think some of those moments can be rationalised. Yea, him trying to force eggman to be something he’s not and being an arse to metal is out of character, but bro is also constantly dying and can’t have a normal interaction anymore without the other person keeping distance.

To be fair it isn't completley accurate to say 06 isn't canon, elements showing up in generations proves that. It's just canon that the events were erased from existence, but something of what happened still remains.

i feel like.. personality is much less linear than folk think it is. I think Ian Flynn writes a good sonic, and his sonic reflects the world he’s living in. Modern sonic is a consequence of the sonic you remince of in this video. After sonic saved the world a billion times. After sonic grows up and matures a bit. this is still sonic, he’s just matured, and lived and learned. I think sonic believes in forgiveness, which makes him feel a bit naive sometimes, but giving people the change and autonomy to chose their destiny is what he’s all about. why wouldn’t he be confused about mister tinker? eggman was an amnesiac kindly old man not two seconds ago, and now he’s back to his maniacal ways? talk about whiplash- of course he’s confused and maybe trying appeal to that side of him again. Sonic thinking about the next best action? is that really something to nitpick? i dunno. i don’t think you’re wrong, if not extremely critical, which might lead to nitpicking instead of big picture stuff. i’d assume.

Doesn't anybody in that writer's room take litmus tests of what they draft? Does *nobody* give a damn about characterisation after all these dark ages? Has absolutely *NO ONE* looked at passed games, even Ian and Co who're trying to connect all this? This may sound like an extreme response but I'm genuinely curious on an argumentative standpoint

A lot of people see this as Sega confirming that Mephiles will never come back. I see the exact opposite. When it comes to characters returning, it is often only a matter of how much people want to see it. If people want it enough, a writer can find some BS to make it happen. Just look at every comic villain that came back due to popularity. In the past, the main reason Mephiles would NEVER return was not because his timeline got erased. But because 06 was such a memed failure that Team Sonic wanted to forget about it. Pretend it never happened. It was the Star Wars Prequels of Sonic. But... much like the Star Wars prequels, over the years, fans began to appreciate the good in 06. Recognising it as the rough draft of a game that could have been good. And Mephiles in particular has gone from "Dumb edgelord villain" to being praised as one of Sonic's best villains. Type "Mephiles" in the you tube search and the first things you see are essays calling him an amazing villain And I think Sega has taken notice. They've seen the interest, but... they're also cautious. They got burned before. What if this is just some vocal minority and most Sonic Fans actually still hate Mephiles and end up crucifying them if he really returns. So this was them testing the waters. A small showing of Mephiles, something they would NEVER have done a decade ago. A tiny cameo to see how people will react. And given the overwhelmingly positive reception this one scene has gotten... I highly doubt this is the last time we will see Mephiles in Sonic.

Yeah i get your point about Sonic being hypocritical in the IDW comics. It would've been better if Sonic spares eggman, knowing that he'd never change no matter what, because that's just the kinda guy Sonic is. What he ironically did with Zavok in the comic series

A little detail about this collection of sonic x shadow gens, is if mephiles still lives in the pure void on shadow campain, iblis it's also on the void but it's a level of crisis city This detail made me wonder if mephiles can scape the white space of shadow gens and can meet again with iblis on sonic's campaing It is possible to break the seal if mephiles coul meet again with iblis with all his power of time space????

No disrespect to Ian Flynn at all cuz I prefer him as the writer for the games compared to the last ones, but I do think that Ian kind of writes sonic to be more like shadow which kinda leaves a bad tastes in some people's mouth cuz 1. it isn't sonic, he's more carefree than how he's being written right now, and 2. just seems too redundant since shadow is already like this. Not to say sonic can't show ANY emotion, but I do think sonic should be a little less over-emotional. Also I agree with quips just not fitting sonic, I kinda miss the more aggressive sonic. he feels less cool and more trying to seem normal? which has the opposite effect in my opinion. I guess the lesson has been what everyone has been already saying, sonic doesn't try to convince the audience he's cool, he SHOWS the audience why he's cool.

Perfect. My thoughts exactly when i came back to the series after revisiting after the first movie. I was in 8th grade when the movie came out. Watched it. Liked it and got into all the recent games that i stopped playing as a kid(well a younger kid lol) and even then i realized, “uh, why is sonic not cool in this movie”. Then i played forces despite hearing it was trash and gameplay aside, sonic was still kinda uncool. I mean i played colors as a kid and didnt realize it but yeah he got lame after that game. I grew up with unleashed. Story book etc. but to sum up everything i want to make this point Its the movies fault. Like em or hate em. As its own separate canon they are good but its their fault. Yeah colors is kinds to blame too but its movies that did it. And for the most underlooked reason ever. So u notice since the movie era, sonic is now for some reason electric? Why? I thought he was the wind. Knight of the wind? Sonic wind? Free as the wind? Falling free in the wind? What happened to that? The reason sonic is changing is because they are leaninng into thr electric speedster persona. Now most series when handing their Ip to another media, usually keep that media seperate from its main media. Like yeah teen titans go behave how they do, but the real teen titans remain how they are in comics and other places. But since sega is super insecure about their ip, they compromised their character to make the new audience happy. Thats carried into prime and other places like idw. Thats why i blame the movies. I like this take on the video i just think the metal virus arc I might be seeing it differently but how he acts like with him freezing up is out of character but it’s just a thought bubble. I get he wouldn’t hesitate like that but at the same time he can’t do things like he usually would since it would get other people (and environment) infected and I think either before or after this panel he’s been running around the whole time getting tired since he hasn’t rested. I only say this because Sonic doesn’t care about his life being in danger he just goes “Fuck it we ball” like he does in SA2, Secret Rings, Black Knight (I guess really all games). But when other people are at risk he does get worried it’s just different in certain media like Sonic X: He got angry when Chris and Cosmo were hurt by the Metarex and went Dark Sonic Sonic Battle: He had to take down Emerl because he would’ve destroyed the Earth (against his will) and afterwards had to hear his final words he was hurt because he really tried to bring him back to Earth to everyone. Eggman point was hella valid tho because like you said neither of them are gonna change how they do things. I also never realized people connect him Spider-Man but I can see it now because they did make him super quippy so that’s valid.

I think the whole doubting himself is from the forgotten fact that if Sonic fails to help the people, he's just making the entire situation worse, and when he already does that, he just tries with what he has left to use.

I don't understand your issue with the metal virus scene. That's not simple insecurity or lack of belief in oneself. He is at an objective crossroads. Tails cowers against Chaos 0 because he's scared. Amy runs away from Zero cuz she doesn't believe she can beat him. They are scared and insecure, & therefore do not act. This is not that, Sonic is not doubting himself or refusing to take action. In fact he takes immediate action in the same page when he sees Eggman. I don't think this is even Sonic being tired or stressed. This is him trying to act *smarter*. The Metal Virus forces Sonic not to act as reckless as usual, cuz he can (& DOES) end up hurting people. Which he would never want. I think Sonic is out of character in that arc, even that page I think could be done a bit more Sonic like. He should look less wimpy and sad and more frustrated. I don't even think he should be at a crossroads for more than a minute. After that his thoughts should be "Well I can't sit here and do nothing, whatever happens happens." But I fail to see how this is a betrayal of his character when the metal virus forces him not to act as freely, and he's seen the consequences of acting that way for most of the arc. Especially in that part of it. It's a very simple learning from his mistakes and doing better than he did previously. I don't think it's the same as Frontiers either. The cyber-corruption is only a detriment to Sonic. It is not a contagious virus. The more it spreads the more it hurts him and him alone. And he's always been content giving his life to others. What he doesn't want is to hurt people, and therefore just...thinks about the best choice. It is a very simple very basic thing literally any person & any character no matter how unique would do.

That Colors jawn was fun ONCE! There was a video about the problems with Shadow, and it brought me to the same conclusion. Sonic does not need to be a dork, he got like 13 niggas who can be the dork ass super hero with a lot of insecurities while he does his thing. The curse of Ian Flynn's writing for Sonic is that he comes from the Archie comics which evolved from that 90's American separated quills characterization. Not even on no "The Japanese was better" just the way he got done over here left him really weird and it ripples over. I understand those damn mandates now.

Alot of new gen alpha fans were introduced to sonic through colors, boom, and yes...even the paramount films...🙄so, that's probably where many of these "sonic is like spidey" comparisons came from. From what i've observed, they don't understand sonics actual character. When confronted by older, more knowledgeable fans that are from gen z or gen x, most of them feel like being educated on simple facts, is an attack on what they grew up with. When properly educated on who sonic actually is, they think that he's boring, and shouldn't be that way. They think, that he should "grow" and be more relatable😂 what they're asking for is a different character. It's too difficult for them to accept, that they've been viewing game sonic all wrong. So, they choose to remain ignorant. This is what happens when you're not consistent, and you keep changing the direction of your franchise. New takes on sonic, equals more ways for new fans to get introduced to him. And that in of itself, is a double edged sword.

I agree with a lot of the points this video made. Ironically the attempt they made to make sonic "more relatable" in recent years has made me kinda estranged to him. Especially with the weird new spin they gave of him knowing he is everyones hero and tries to act in accordance with that. When that was never once his goal or passion in the first place. It made him feel dishonest to me...

Cool video, I don't agree with the takes on Ian Flynn's writing but I do see where you come from with and I think the problem lays more in "show, don't tell", I agree with colors, lost world, generations and forces being bad depictions of the character (because the ones writing those games used wikipedia of all things to inform themselves about Sonic) though. The one thing I do have a problem is saying that Sonic is not a hero. It is true that being a hero isn't his thing, but he is heroic, in fact the scene you showed where he chose to rescue the parents from the dragon in the black knight is an example. Just because he doesn't see himself as a hero doesn't means he isn't considered one or that he doesn't acts like it. And his motive for stopping Eggman isn't really "he is messing with my fun" but more like "he will enslave everyone" which goes against what Sonic believes in, that being freedom. He might be an adventurous guy at his core, but denying that he also loves nature and wants to keep the world safe is not something I agree with.

Guess my favorite charactization would be the adventure Era version of Sonic, he didn't really waste time explaining his actions he just did what comes to mind. He was impulsive and had attitude but he still did right by his friends and people around him, that his actions spoke louder than him. Blackknight and around that era of Sonic's, really emphasized a lot of the Noble qualities of Sonic around that point, it showed more of his compassion for others, but didn't do it for any heroic sense of justice, he still had that vibe of doing what he wanted because he could, but he might be more willing to act first and explain later. 2010's Era of Sonic and onwards is more snarky, a 'Been-There-Done-That' kind of vibe with this Sonic. He's definitely more prone to running his mouth as much as his feet. More full of quips and one-liners about how he's gonna kick a foe's butt first, before doing it and then proceeds to joke after.

Personally, I prefer ALL SONICS; I think people should just chill out and enjoy the blue blur in general because he could have died out like the Mega Man series, RIP Mega Man, so to the Sonic community enjoy what you've got, but to me "It Doesn't Matter" because to me Sonic is SONIC. Lol

In my opinion this is what happens when you let a fan write for the franchise. Like Ian Flynn is a good writer not gonna rake anything away from him and without a shadow of a doubt is leagues above pnotaff and graff (probably spelled that wrong). But the issue I think cones in is that, Sonic means different things to different people and everyone has an opinion on what sonic shoupd and shouldnt be which at times contradicts from what and who he actually is. When you have a fan writing for the franchise those biasis start to leak into the writing. Like the issue with Amy before she was a 12 year old going though her heart throb phase for the 15 year old Sonic. She was a charcter that felt the most grounded amongst the cast as she wasnt as fast as Sonic, strong as Knuckles, or as smart as Tails. But despite not having been blesses with the biomechanical gifts of her compatriots still managed to play a part in these cataclysmic events, and with her more grounded perspective and compassion was able to reach and change antagonistic forces. But now shes not head over heals for Sonic like she was before and her and Sonic apparently have the stereotypical we both have a thing for each other but are afraid to admit it thing going on. Another thing with the call back with lyrics of sonic songs in the writing sometimes its inoffensive and others its like okay time to dial it down a bit chief. I feel like the writing relies too much on nostalgia and callbacks instead of craving its own future. Again not taking snything away from the current writers because there are things that I enjoy about the writing, but if you ask me if having a fan write for the franchise is ideal I'd honestly have to say no. I'd much prefer just a compitent writer (ideally Japanese) get tasked with writing the story. Have them learn what and who these characters are from official sources meaning past works and craft a awesome story from there. Most of the past stories we call back to were created in this fashion, SA2 on of the best if not best Sonic stories was created like this. My point in summary is that some Sonic fans have biasis for what and who they want the characters to be and having a writer whose not necessarily a fan can provide for better story telling and more on brand story telling. Also yes I know Pontaff and Graff werent Sonic fans when they got brought on but thats why i said compitent writers and said preferably a Japanese writer as I'd think they'd put more effort into learning the characters than using a wiki page

I think Sonic is relatable in his own way. He's a chill teenager that likes to run, but he's not afraid to stand up for what he believes. He's young, wild and free, that's why I believe he is relatable. I'm not a native english speaker, so I hope I could articulate my thoughts fine.
